23:48   Qatar announces truce extension in Gaza by 2 days
Qatar has successfully negotiated an agreement between Israel and Hamas to extend the four-day truce between them by an additional two days, Doha's foreign ministry spokesperson said.

"The State of Qatar announces, as part of the ongoing mediation, an agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip," posted spokesperson Majed Al Ansari on X.

This means at least ten more Israeli hostages will be released on Tuesday and that another ten will be released on Wednesday, with 30 Palestinian prisoners to be freed by Israel on each day as well, as reported by The Times of Israel.

There is no immediate Israeli confirmation of the truce extension but Hamas issues its own statement confirming as much, crediting the Qatari and Egyptian mediation efforts, it added.

As the deal appears to be back on track following an earlier dispute, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office has announced that Israeli authorities have informed the families of the hostages set to be released in the following hours.

An Israeli official told The Times of Israel earlier that Hamas was trying to separate mothers from their children in today's release, which Israel appears to have succeeded in blocking.

Hebrew media reports that 11 Israeli hostages will be released shortly -- nine children and two women, who are the mothers of some of the children.

There has not been an official Israeli statement confirming these numbers.  -- ANI

23:39   Under fire from OBC leaders, activist Jarange withdraws 'undeserving people' remarks
Quota activist Manoj Jarange on Monday retracted his remarks on the Marathas working under "undeserving people', which were seen as an insult to the Other Backward Classes in Maharashtra and invited a backlash, saying he wanted to remain focused on protecting the interest of his community.

Jarange has undertaken hunger strikes lasting several days on two different occasions since August-end as part of his agitation seeking reservation in government jobs and education for Maratha community members and has been holding rallies across the state in support of his demand.

peaking at a rally in Pune on Monday last (November 20), he stoked a controversy by saying,

"Our kids are smart and intelligent. However, we are left with no option but to work under undeserving people. Had we got reservation benefits 70 years ago, the Marathas would have been the most advanced community by now."
Although the activist did not take any particular community's name, his remarks did not go down well with the state's OBC leaders who saw it as insulting and strongly criticised his choice of words. -- PTI

22:24   Stir against Vendanta arm turns violent in Jharkhand
Several people including a few police personnel were injured following a clash between villagers and cops in Jharkhand's Bokaro district on Monday.

According to officials, the incident took place outside the main gate of ESL Steel Limited, a Vedanta Group company, around 140km from Bokaro.

The police said the villagers, who were staging a dharna outside the company's gate in support of its nine-point charter of demands since morning, allegedly tried to enter the premises of the company when they were stopped by the firm's security men.

Siyaljori circle inspector Ravi Kumar Anand said when police personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control, villagers pelted stones at them in which several cops were injured.

He added that a number of villagers also sustained injuries when police used mild lathi-charge to disperse them.

He said the injured have been admitted to the company's hospital and the condition of all them are stable.

An FIR has also been lodged in this regard, Anand said.

In a statement, ESL Steel Limited said, "While ESL, Vedanta maintains that issues should be resolved through talks, the locals have taken the law into their hands. They have indulged in stone pelting and assault on state police and our security with sticks and stones. In the process, many policemen have been injured. The locals have also damaged private vehicles and police vehicles outside the plant gate. We strongly condemn such acts of violence and remain open to a constructive dialogue." -- PTI

An MP-MLA court has summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a 2018 defamation case over alleged "objectionable" comments he made against Union minister Amit Shah, the petitioner's counsel said.

During a hearing on the case on Monday, MP/MLA court judge Yogesh Yadav summoned Gandhi on December 16, advocate Santosh Pandey said.

The defamation case was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra in 2018 against the Congress leader for allegedly making "objectionable" comments against Shah at a press conference in Bengaluru.

Bhojpuri actress Akshara Singh on Monday announced that she has joined 'Jan Suraaj', the campaign launched a year ago by political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor, who has vowed to transform his home state Bihar.

Making the announcement at the Jan Suraaj office in Patna, Singh called herself a "Bihar ki beti" who was moved by the aspiration of Kishor, currently away in north Bihar as part of a statewide pada yatra

"If I had any political ambitions, had I been looking for a ticket in elections, I could have approached my well wishers who are aplenty in all political parties. 18:50   Pawar, Uddhav groups behind Maratha quota violence: Shinde's Sena
Leaders of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party faction and Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray were behind the violence that had erupted in Antarwali Sarati village, the ground zero of the Maratha quota stir, in Jalna district of Maharashtra in September, the ruling Shiv Sena alleged on Monday.

The police had used baton-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse a violent mob on Dhule-Solapur road in Ambad tehsil of Jalna district on September 1 amid opposition to shift fasting Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange to a hospital.

"Leaders of the Sharad Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-UBT were behind the violence that occurred in Antarwali Sarati village," Sanjay Shirsat, the spokesperson of Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, alleged while speaking to reporters.

He alleged a "contract" was given for the violence and a person arrested by the police later was found with a revolver.

"Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut had earlier given a statement saying there can be violence in Maharashtra. A leader from NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) was present in Jalna guest house when the incident occurred in Antarwali Sarati village," the MLA alleged. Shirsat further said since the inquiry is underway, he would not name the leader who was present in the guest house.

"But those who tried to trigger violence and defame the Maharashtra government will not be spared and action will be taken against them," he said, adding that the Antarwali Sarati incident occurred when Maratha quota agitation was going on peacefully. -- PTI

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday said late Anand Dighe, who is his mentor, built an empire of citizens without being on any official post.

Speaking at the 'muhurat' of Dharamveer-2, the second part of a biopic on Dighe, a hugely popular Shiv Sena leader in the Thane belt, Shinde, without naming anyone, said some people did not like the way certain events were depicted in the first part titled Dharamveer Mukkam Post

"Ours is the full and final decision and we are going ahead with what we feel is right," Shinde said.

Dighe, a firebrand leader, ran the Shiv Sena in the Thane-Palghar belt and adjoining areas in his own way and enjoyed a massive following among people and unflinching loyalty from leaders here.

Thanking the actors and artistes who contributed for the first part, which released in May last year, Shinde said it had enhanced the popularity of Dighe worldwide and had also won 17 awards.

17:44   Musk visits Israel, tours kibbutz with Netanyahu
Elon Musk, who's been under fire over accusations of antisemitism flourishing on his social media platform X, paid a visit Monday to Israel, where he toured a kibbutz that was attacked last month by Hamas militants and was set to meet with top leaders.

The billionaire and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toured the Kfar Azza kibbutz, which was stormed by Hamas militants on Oct 7.

Musk, wearing a protective vest and escorted by a phalanx of security personnel, used his phone to take photos or videos of the devastation, according to video released by Netanyahu's office.

Musk also was due to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Benny Gantz, a former defense minister who's now part of a special war Cabinet. Government spokesperson Eylon Levy declined to say whether Musk was invited or came on his own. X, formerly known as Twitter, did not respond to a request for comment.

Israel's communications minister, Shlomo Karhi, tweeted earlier Monday about a deal that his ministry had reached with Musk's Starlink satellite internet company.

As a result of this significant agreement, Starlink satellite units can only be operated in Israel with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, including the Gaza Strip, Karhi wrote, without providing further details.

Musk has faced accusations of tolerating antisemitic messages on the platform since purchasing it last year, and the content on X has gained increased scrutiny since the war between Israel and Hamas began. -- ANI

17:27   BJP has just called this CM 'crime master Gogo'
Bhartiya Janata Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday of being 'crime master Gogo', a fictional character who dupes people and accused the AAP government of discrepancies in the Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) tendering process for upgrading its sewage treatment plants.

Questioning the AAP government's silence on the Delhi Jal Board scam, BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia said, "There are many illegalities in the said scam, but the 'crime-master' Gogo (Arvind Kejriwal) will not speak a word on corruption-related matters."

Bhatia said ten sewage treatment plants in the city were divided into two categories and only upgradation was to be done in the first category, while in the second category, the work was related to increasing the capacity.

Addressing the media, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, "If there is any politician in India who has mastered the art of corruption, lies, and deceit then it is Arvind Kejriwal..."

He added that the estimated cost of the project was Rs 1,500 crore but the Delhi Jal Board awarded contracts worth around Rs 1,938 crore last year.

Alleging the AAP government's corruption in the Delhi Jal Board scam, Bhatia said, "A scam related to the Delhi Jal Board has surfaced. 10 STP (sewage treatment plants) divided into two categories.

"In the first category, only upgradation was to be done and in the second category, work was to be done to increase the capacity. Its estimated cost was Rs 1,500 crore but in 2022, the Delhi Jal Board awarded the contracts, the total value of which was around Rs 1,938 crore." -- ANI

17:12   Tunnel rescue: Manual horizontal drilling to start shortly
Manual horizontal digging will start soon in addition to the ongoing top-down drilling to rescue the 41 trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, NDMA said on Monday.

Manual drilling was resorted to as the auger drill -- a corkscrew-like device with a rotary blade at the front end -- which drilled up to 46.8 metres busted as it hit several hurdles on the way and got entangled in a girder in the debris.

Vertical and manual horizontal drilling are the two methods on which rescue efforts are being focused at the moment. Work on the other options, such as horizontal drilling from the Barkot end of the tunnel is also underway.

A total of 86 metres have to be drilled vertically to prepare an escape passage. Pipes of 1.2 metres in diameter have to be laid vertically through the top of the tunnel on which work began on Sunday as a second option to reach the stranded labourers.

Giving an update on the rescue operations, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Member Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain told reporters here that rat-hole miners will start manual digging shortly. Broken parts of the auger machine have been removed from the rubble with the help of a plasma cutter flown in from Hyderabad.

He further said the government is fully committed to the safe rescue of all the 41 workers who have been trapped in the tunnel since November 12. Hasnain said both private and public agencies are involved in the rescue operations.

Prime Minister's Principal Secretary PK Mishra, Home Secretary Ajay K Bhalla and Uttarakhand Chief Secretary S S Sandhu also took stock of the ongoing rescue operations. PTI

The Adani Group has issued a clarification that it has no involvement in the construction of the Uttarakhand tunnel that collapsed, in which 41 workers have been trapped for 16 days now.

The company stated that it strongly condemns the attempts to link it to the incident. Adani Group or any of its subsidiaries have no direct or indirect involvement in the construction of the Uttarkashi tunnel.

The Indian conglomerate said in a media statement Monday that some elements are making attempts to link them to the unfortunate collapse of the under-construction tunnel in Uttarakhand. The Navayuga Engineering Company Limited was building the tunnel.

"We also clarify that we do not own or hold any shares in the company involved in the tunnel's construction," an Adani Group spokesperson said in the media statement.

"At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the trapped workers and their families," the spokesperson added.

Multiple agencies are working on the rescue efforts. In the latest, the Indian Air Force has also joined in as it flew in critical DRDO equipment.

16:26   Classmates stab Class 4 student 108 times with...
A student of Class 4 was allegedly attacked by three of his classmates 108 times with a geometry compass during a fight at a private school in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Monday.

Taking cognisance of the incident, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has asked for the investigation report from the police, the official said. Talking to PTI, CWC chairperson Pallavi Porwal said the student was allegedly attacked 108 times with a geometry compass by his classmates during a fight at a private school under the limits of Aerodrome police station on November 24.

"The case is shocking. We have sought an investigation report from the police to find out the reason for the violent behaviour of children of such a young age," she said.

The CWC will counsel children and their families in connection with the incident and find out whether the children play video games that contain violent scenes, Porwal said.

The father of the victim alleged that the boy had sustained puncture wounds in the attack that occurred at the school around 2 pm on November 24. He was taken to a hospital and administered first aid, after which he was allowed to leave.

"My son narrated the ordeal when he returned home. I still do not know why he was treated so violently by his classmates. The school management is not providing me the CCTV footage of the classroom," he said.

A complaint has been lodged about the incident at the Aerodrome police station, he said. Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Singh Chauhan said the victim underwent a medical examination after the complaint was lodged.

All children involved in the incident are below 10 years of age, and appropriate steps are being taken as per the legal provisions, he said. PTI

A delegation led by Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Pramod Kumar Mishra took stock of ongoing efforts to rescue 41 trapped workers in Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi on the 16th day of the operations.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Uttarakhand Chief Secretary SS Sandhu along with Pramod Kumar Mishra inspected the work inside the tunnel.

The Principal Secretary also enquired about the food items sent to the workers trapped inside the tunnel. PK Mishra also spoke to the trapped workers and their families.

Micro tunnelling expert Chris Cooper said earlier today that all the debris of the auger machine has been removed and manual drilling to reach the trapped labourers will start in a few hours.

The auger machine being used for horizontal drilling of the tunnel that got stuck inside the pipe was cut and removed using a plasma cutter, on Monday morning.

Vouching for the manual method, former Army Engineer-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Harpal Singh (Retd), told ANI that there is no other way left except the manual method to reach the trapped workers.

Singh said that he reached the site to provide technical inputs and further aid the ongoing rescue operations. He added that efforts are made on all fronts to speed up the rescue process.

As per official sources, the rat hole mining technique will be used through manual drilling to remove the debris inside the pipe to accelerate the rescue.

The rat hole mining technique is generally used in coal mining, especially in regions that have difficult terrain. -- ANI

15:36   Rich get richer, poor get poorer in T'gana: Priyanka
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday attacked the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led regime, alleging that all "big" leaders in the BRS are sitting in farmhouses and running the government, and the poor are becoming poorer while the ruling party is becoming richer.

Addressing a poll rally at Bhongir, about 50 km from Hyderabad, she alleged that if the BRS is voted to power again, the government will run from "farmhouse" and the land liquor mafia will rule the state, while there will not be any employment opportunities available.

Appealing to people to vote for the Congress, she listed out the "six guarantees" announced by the party for the November 30 assembly polls. "Big leaders of Telangana are sitting in their mansions and farmhouses and running the government... All its (BRS) leaders are sitting in big mansions. All their policies are for big business people only. They do not have anything for the small business people, middle class, poor, Dalits and Adivasis," she said.

"Telangana's poor are becoming poorer and the BRS party is getting richer," she added. The Congress leader alleged that whether the BJP or BRS, their policy is to just stay in power and become richer. The respective party leaders also become rich, she said.

14:53   Tunnel workers given eye drops, movies, undies
As the rescue operation has been delayed due to the hurdles in drilling, the workers have been counselled by doctors and psychiatrists to keep them motivated.

Dr Prem Pokhriyal, another senior doctor with the medical team said, the trapped workers are being examined regularly.

"Initially, we gave them juices and energy drinks. But now they are getting proper meals. In the morning, we send boiled eggs, milk, tea and dalia and for lunch and dinner, they get dal, rice, chapati and subzi. Disposable plates have been given to them," he said.

"To keep them hydrated, I told them to drink ORS power, which is already sent. Eye drops, vitamin tablets and other energy drinks have also been sent to them," Dr Pokhriyal said and added a lot of stock of dry fruits and biscuits have also been given.

An official said toothpaste, brushes, towels, clothes and undergarments, all are being provided to them. Mobile phones containing movies and video games were given to them, he said.

"I talk to them daily," Dr Pokhriyal said. For sleep, fortunately, there were bundles of geotextile sheets, which were lying inside. They used them for sleep. The workers do yoga and exercise and walk in the tunnel in the morning and evening," he said.

The stretch where they are trapped is about two kilometres and the temperature is between 22 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius. "They do not require woollen clothes as of now," he said.

They have a round-the-clock electricity supply. When the rubble collapsed, the electricity supply which was set during the construction was not destroyed, as it was done through the walls, an official said

13:39   Shrinks, family talk to tunnel workers every day
"Don't be nervous, we're on it." That's what family members of Saba Ahmad, one of the 41 workers trapped at Sikyara tunnel for the last 15 days, keep telling whenever they communicate with him.

A mic has been sent to the workers, stuck in a 2-km built-up area beyond the rubble accumulated in the collapsed part, through a pipe which helps them talk to people outside. As the rescue operation got delayed due to the hurdles in drilling, Saba Ahmad was counselled by doctors and psychiatrists to keep him motivated, his brother Naiiyar Ahmad told PTI.

A team of doctors, stationed at the rescue operation site, talk to the trapped workers twice a day -- from 9 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm. Also, family members of the trapped workers are allowed to talk to them anytime they like. The administration has set up a camp for the kin of the workers outside the tunnel.

Naiiyar, who is staying in a room provided by the construction company, near the camp said he talks to his brother twice daily and also makes sure that Saba's wife and three children, who are in Bihar's Bhojpur, talk to him.

"We keep motivating him. We never talk about the difficulties and hurdles but tell them that they will come out soon. The workers are doing fine as they get almost every essential item inside," Naiyyar said.

It has been 16 days since the 41 workers were trapped inside the tunnel after a portion of it collapsed on November 12. The rescue operation was started soon after the incident but the work was delayed due to hurdles in drilling. A team of five doctors, including two psychiatrists, have been stationed at the rescue site round the clock.

Dr Bimlesh Joshi, who is a nodal officer of the medical team at the site, said, "Apart from this, at least 10 more doctors remain on standby in Uttarkashi till the rescue operation is on."

The psychiatrists and doctors are constantly in touch with the family members and keep counselling them as and when required so that they do not say something which can make any negative impact on the minds of the trapped workers, he said. Dr Prem Pokhriyal, another senior doctor with the medical team said, the trapped workers are being examined regularly.

"Initially, we gave them juices and energy drinks. But now they are getting proper meals. In the morning, we send boiled eggs, milk, tea and dalia and for lunch and dinner, they get dal, rice, chapati and subji. Disposable plates have been given to them," he said.

13:12   Day 16 tunnel rescue: What 6 specialists will do
As operations to rescue the 41 trapped workers at the Silkyara Tunnel collapse site entered day 16, there was some positive news with Micro tunnelling expert Chris Cooper saying that all the debris of the auger machine has been removed and manual drilling to reach the trapped labourers will start in a few hours.

"All the debris (of the Auger machine) removed. (Manual drilling) will probably start after 3 hours," Chris Cooper told ANI today.

Earlier today, the auger machine being used for horizontal drilling of the tunnel that got stuck inside the pipe was cut and removed using a plasma cutter.

"We have 9 meters of hand tunnelling to do. It really depends on how the ground behaves. Could be quickly, could be a bit longer. If we hit some lattice girder. Then we've got to cut out the lattice girder, but we're confident we can get through. The Army is just supervising (the operation). 30 metres of (vertical drilling) has been done", he added. Vouching for the manual method, former Army Engineer-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Harpal Singh (Retd), earlier today, said that there is no other way left except the manual method to reach the trapped workers.

A team of 6 specialists have reached the site to undertake the manual drilling work and a team of 11 people will go inside the 800 mm pipe of the tunnel to remove the debris manually.

The team includes engineers from the Indian Army's Madras Engineering Group as well as civilians. In collaboration with the Border Road Organisation and other agencies, efforts are also underway to enter from the other mouth of the tunnel that is the Barkot side.

Four blasts were undertaken under the supervision of BRO and so far only 10 metres out of 500 meters have been covered. -- ANI

12:49   Naxalites torch 14 vehicles, construction machines in Dantewada
Suspected Naxalites set afire at least 14 vehicles and machines engaged in construction works in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district on Monday, police said. No person was reported to be injured in the incident, which took place at around 1.30 am at Bangali camp under Bhansi police station limits, a senior police official said.

"As per eyewitnesses, 40 to 50 unidentified people, clad as civilians and a few of them armed, reached the spot and set ablaze 14 vehicles and machines, including trucks, poclain and earth moving machines, parked there," he said.

While 13 vehicles and machines, belonging to a private construction firm, were engaged in road construction between Dantewada and Bacheli, a water tanker was engaged in railway works, he said.

Soon after being alerted, a police team led by Bhansi station house officer went to the spot, he said. "Prima facie it seems to be the handiwork of Naxalites and search operation is underway in the area to trace the culprits," the official said. -- PTI

12:27   Exchange terms: 1 Israeli = 3 Palestinian prisoners
For every Israeli citizen freed, three Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails are being released, the BBC reports.

Early indications suggest the truce, which expires at midnight, could be extended.

Israel is offering a further day of pause in the fighting in Gaza for every ten captives released -- and Hamas says it could agree to an extension.

A Palestinian official told the BBC between 20 to 40 additional Israeli hostages could be freed. Around 180 people remain in captivity, including about a dozen children.

12:01   From Dec 1, no visa for Indians travelling to...
Malaysia will grant a 30-day visa-free entry for Indian and Chinese citizens from December 1, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced, joining Thailand and Sri Lanka in recent weeks to offer such a facility to foreigners to promote tourism.

Ibrahim said the waiver was an additional facility to the existing visa exemptions currently enjoyed by Gulf nations and other West Asian countries, including Turkiye and Jordan.

However, Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister of the country, said the visa exemption was subject to top security screening, the official Bernama news agency reported. "Initial screenings will be conducted for all tourists and visitors to Malaysia. Security is a different matter. If there are criminal records or the risk of terrorism, they will not be allowed to enter," the prime minister said.

"That comes under the authority of the security forces and immigration," the premier said. The 30-day visa-free entry is also currently enjoyed by eight ASEAN countries for the purpose of social visits, tourism and business. Malaysia is currently targeting 16.1 million international tourist arrivals with RM 49.3 billion in tourism receipts.

11:36   Tunnel expert: No other way left except...
As the vertical drilling makes swift progress, former Engineer-in-Chief and Director General of Border Roads Organisation, Lieutenant General Harpal Singh (Retd) said that there is no other way left except manual method to reach the trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel.

"There is no other way left except the manual method and this is also the safe one through which we can reach the labourers. In the current situation, the Auger machine that was stuck has been removed. Efforts are underway to remove the 1.5 meters of the damaged pipe. After its removal, strengthening and muck clearance, skilled labourers will go in with the help of the army. We hope this will be done soon," Lt. Gen Harpal Singh (retd) said.

Singh said that he reached the site to provide technical inputs and further aid the ongoing rescue operations. He added that efforts are made on all fronts to speed up the rescue process.

"I have come here to provide technical inputs and participate in further rescue operations. The work which is being done through the pipeline from below and also the work which is being done through vertical drilling from above which has been done around 31 meters, efforts are being made through both the routes," he said.

Speaking further on the manual drilling to be undertaken, he said, "We are here to assist, the operations are carried out by the Army and also other agencies. We all are working together. The works are done under the leadership of the Secretary of the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH)."

"The Engineers Regiment of the Army has made a manual drift and along with them the people of the Engineer Regiment will work on laying the last 10-12 metre pipeline," he added.

10:56   Now, rat hole mining to be used in tunnel rescue
In an effort to step up the rescue operations in Uttarkashi, a rat hole mining technique will be used for manual drilling to remove the debris inside the pipe on the 16th day of continued rescue efforts in Silkyara tunnel, according to officials.

As per official sources, a team of six specialists have reached the site to undertake the manual drilling work. They will go inside the 800 mm pipe of the tunnel to remove the debris manually. The team includes engineers from the Indian Army's Madras Engineering Group as well as civlians.

Apart from the drilling machine, a hammer, a shovel, a trowel, and a life support device for oxygen will be carried by these specialised teams while going inside the tunnel.

The auger machine being used for horizontal drilling of the tunnel that got stuck inside the pipe was cut and removed earlier today using a plasma cutter. The auger machine stuck inside the pipe, produced 48 m of debris on the mouth of the tunnel, which will also be removed by the rat miners.

Rat miners are specialists in digging and drilling manually in narrow passages including tube mines who mostly work in mines and have the experience of drilling for hours.

The rat hole mining technique is generally used in coal mining, especially in regions that have difficult terrain.

"It is a challenging operation. We were called in from Delhi. We reached here yesterday. We are basically from Madhya Pradesh. We will try our best to complete the drilling process as soon as possible," one of the civilian specialists who reached the site to carry out manual drilling told ANI.

10:14   Delhi is smoking 22 cigarettes a day; AQI 400
Delhi's air quality inched closer to the 'severe' category on Monday morning with calm winds and cloudy conditions trapping pollutants, according to monitoring agencies.

A thick layer of smog blanketed Delhi and its suburbs, reducing visibility to just 600 metres at 8 am at the Safdarjung Observatory, the national capital's primary weather station. The visibility was 800 metres at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

An official at the India Meteorological Department said a slight increase in wind speed and light rainfall may bring marginal relief during the day.

Unfavourable atmospheric conditions are likely to persist for two to three days, the official said. Delhi's air quality index (AQI) stood at 400 at 9 am.

400 AQI exposure over 24 hours is like smoking 22 cigarettes in a day.

09:49   55 m of drilling needed to rescue tunnel workers
The vertical drilling from the top of the hill made swift progress as 31 metres of work has been completed so far out of the 86 metres needed to reach the 41 trapped workers in the Silkyara tunnel, as per officials.

Now the drilling work is being done to lay an 800/900 mm or 1.2 m diameter pipeline to aid the rescue.

The option to drill vertically was chalked out after the auger machine being used for horizontal drilling of the tunnel broke down.

According to official sources, the American auger machine that was stuck in the debris of the tunnel has been completely cut with a plasma cutter.

The front part of the American Auger machine is stuck in the pipeline. Efforts are underway to remove the debris and the front part of the machine, the officials said.

In the process of cutting and removing the American Auger machine, a 2-metre portion of the last part of the pipeline (i.e. 48 to 50 meters) has also been twisted.

The officials said that cutting and removing the 2-metre portion of the pipeline is also a big challenge.

Further, they added that it is difficult to give an exact time frame when the manual drilling work will start.

As per National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the drilling work is expected to be completed by November 30. -- ANI
