21:38   NIA files supplementary charge sheet against man in terror plot case of MP
The National Investigation Agency on Friday filed a supplementary charge sheet against an accused involved in terror activities of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, an official said.

The charge sheet was filed in a special court in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh against Ali Asgar alias Abdullah Bihari, a resident of Bihar, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a spokesperson of the NIA said.

So far, 10 active cadres of the proscribed terrorist organisation, including six illegal immigrants of Bangladesh, have been arrested in connection with the case which was initially registered on March 14 last year at the STF police station in Bhopal.

The case was taken over by the NIA on April 5.

The agency had filed a charge sheet against six accused on September 7 last year.

"Investigations have established that Asgar had been deeply influenced by the ideology of various proscribed terrorist organisations such as JMB and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent with an intention to further their activities in India," said the spokesperson.

"He entered into a criminal conspiracy with his associates to influence, radicalise and motivate Indian Muslims to prepare for violent jihad against the Indian State. In pursuance of the criminal conspiracy, Asgar translated jihadi literature from Urdu and Arabic to Hindi and uploaded it on social media groups for its circulation amongst impressionable Muslims," the spokesperson said.

20:28   CBI gets Centre's nod to prosecute Lalu in job scam
The Central Bureau of Investigation has got the Centre's sanction to prosecute former railways minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in connection with the land-for-jobs scam, officials said on Friday.

The agency submitted the sanction before a special court on Friday, they said. Sanction to prosecute from the competent authority is a prerequisite for the special court to take cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the agency, they said.

The CBI had filed on October 7 last year a charge sheet against Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi and 14 others in connection with alleged appointments made in the Railways in return for land parcels gifted or sold to his family but the cognisance was pending.

In its charge sheet filed before a special CBI court in New Delhi, the agency has also named Prasad's daughter Misa Bharti, former general manager of Central Railways Sowmya Raghvan, former CPO Railways Kamal Deep Mainrai, seven aspirants appointed as substitutes and four private individuals.

"During the investigation, it has been found that the accused in conspiracy with the then GM, Central Railways, and CPO, Central Railways, engaged persons as substitutes in lieu of land either in their name or in the name of their close relatives," a CBI spokesperson had said in a statement. -- PTI

19:16   LG's decisions 'illegal': Kejriwal after meet
Several of V K Saxena's orders are illegal in light of the 2018 Supreme Court's decisions, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday after his meeting with the lieutenant governor, even as he asked him to keep politics aside from governance matters.

Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said that he had carried copies of the Constitution, the GNCTD Act, and Motor Vehicles Act, with him to his meeting with Saxena.

"Delhi LG has been interfering in the government's work that is causing inconvenience to people of Delhi. My intention was to sort out the issues, which is why I carried copies of the Constitution, Motor Vehicles Act, School Education Act, Supreme Court judgement," he said.

Kejriwal said that there are two kinds of subjects in Delhi -- 'reserved subjects' that include police, land, and public order on which LG can only take decisions, and 'transferred subjects'.

"All the other subjects come under the Delhi government. On July 4, the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court had passed a judgement that said the LG has not been entrusted with any independent decision making power in terms of transferred subjects," he said.

He also said, "There is no independent authority vested in LG to take decisions. In some matters, he can act as a judicial authority."

Kejriwal said that this means that various orders passed by LG, including ones on sealing of Delhi Dialogue and Development Commission Vice Chairman Jasmine Shah's office and issuing of notice demanding Rs 164 crore in recovery for ad expenses, are 'illegal and unconstitutional'.

"However, he said that he has been referred to as the 'Administrator' and enjoys supreme authority," Kejriwal said.

The chief minister also alleged that several departments stopped payments to the Delhi government three months ahead of the MCD polls.

"Officials said that they had been unofficially told to do so. This was done to hurt the AAP in the polls," he alleged.

Kejriwal urged Saxena to keep politics aside and said that he wants to work with LG.   -- PTI

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the probe into the recent terror attacks in Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Addressing a press conference after a day-long visit here, Shah said all terror incidents in Jammu in the past one-and-a-half years will also be probed by the NIA and the Jammu and Kashmir Police will actively assist in the investigation.

"We have yesterday handed over the probe into the Rajouri incident to the NIA," he said.

The twin terrorist attacks on January 1 and 2 in Rajouri had claimed seven lives while 14 people were injured.

Shah also had a security review meeting with security agencies and top officials of Jammu and Kashmir.

"We have discussed how to further strengthen the security grid. The security agencies conveyed to me that they are 100 per cent prepared to deal with any situation and stop such incident in future," he said.

The home minister said the meeting, also attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, had a 360-degree view of the prevailing situation and threadbare discussion on the terror support system.

A time-bound action plan has been drawn up, which envisages tightening of security grid across all areas of Jammu division, within three months, he said.

Shah said the security agencies have assured him that there will be foolproof security in the Union territory.

He said he had come to the Jammu region with the objective of visiting the affected families of the terror attacks in Rajouri but could not go there due to bad weather.

"However, I have spoken to the family members of each of the seven victims by over phone. The families said that they are ready to fight back the terrorists. It is really heartening to hear such things from the them," he said.  -- PTI

16:12   Complainant had prostate problems, says Shankar Mishra
Update: In a surprise U-turn, Shankar Mishra, the man accused of urinating on an elderly woman co-passenger on an Air India flight, told a Delhi court on Friday he did not commit the offensive act.

The claim by his lawyer, made for the first time since the sordid event unfolded on an Air India New York-New Delhi flight on November 26 last year, flies in the face of denunciation of the accused by some of the co-passengers and even a string of WhatsApp exchanges he had with the victim woman which suggested the unsavoury incident indeed took place.

"I'm not the accused. There must be someone else. She herself urinated. She was suffering from some disease related to prostate. It was not him. The seating system was such that no one could go to her seat.

"Her seat could only be approached from behind, and in any case the the urine could not reach to seat's front area. Also, the passenger sitting behind the complainant did not make any such complain," the defence advocate told court. The judge was hearing Delhi police's plea seeking custodial interrogation of the accused. PTI

12:16   BJP stopping teachers from training in Finland: AAP
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday alleged that the BJP was resorting to "dirty politics" to stop the AAP government's efforts to send school teachers to Finland for training.

At a press conference in Delhi, he said so far around 1,100 teachers have undergone training abroad, including Singapore, the UK and Finland. Now, that the people of the BJP have an "unauthorised hold" over the services department, they are "doing dirty politics" to stop the AAP government in Delhi from giving the best training to teachers, Sisodia alleged.

He said that if Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena cares for the future of children and doesn't want their education to be impacted, then he "should not side with the BJP in their conspiracy".

There was no immediate reaction from the BJP or the LG Secretariat over Sisodia's charges.

"We wanted to send a batch of 30 teachers to Finland for training. The LG delayed it on one pretext or another," Sisodia claimed.

The Delhi deputy chief minister alleged the BJP was trying to "use all its might" to stop the Delhi government's efforts to send school teachers to Finland for training.

"We sent teachers to Finland as it is one of the best places that has carried out education reforms. We want to expose our teachers to such international standards, as it is the teachers who contribute to raising the standard of education," Sisodia told reporters.

He said, "The BJP doesn't know it because they have nothing to do with education." Sisodia said the file regarding sending teachers to Finland for training will be again sent to the LG.

"We had sent the file on Finland visit of teachers to LG, and he has asked for a cost-benefit analysis if such a programme can be done in India," he claimed, adding, "The prime minister and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states will go to World Economic Forum. Will that also be stopped on the pretext of cost-benefit analysis?" PTI

12:01   Kejriwal, Satyendar threatened me, claims Sukesh
Sukesh Chandrashekhar, the prime accused in a Rs 200-crore money laundering case has written to Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena about "mental harassment and threats" by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Delhi minister Satyender Jain.

Chandrashekhar has alleged that the AAP leader was harassing him to withdraw complaints filed against him and others associated with them.

In his letter to the LG, Chandrashekhar alleged said, "I have been severely threatened and harassed by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Satyender Jain, through the Jail Administration and their loyal jail staff. One month back when I was lodged in jail-14, Mandoli, Satyender Jain, deputed his confidant staff such as Rajender, Superintendent and Jay Singh Deputy Superintendent to threaten me and to again start extorting me but I was very firm that I would not succumb to their threats and pressure."

Chandrashekhar alleged that last week Jain had given him "a final opportunity" to accept their demands and to hand over all evidence against them in my possession to him. He said that the message was given by him through Jail-14 Superintendent Rajkumar on December 31.

He alleged that Jain had offered him a seat in the Karnataka assembly elections and sand mining contracts in Punjab, in exchange for withdrawing all statements given to the high-powered committee and media and asked him to hand over all the chats, screenshots and voice recordings against them.

"He (Jain) further warned that if I do not agree then, he will make sure I will be transferred from one jail to another in Mandoli and will be tortured and harassed in a way that I, myself would be driven to a stage of committing suicide or will face the same fate like Sushant Singh Rajput, and the case will be closed and further he gave me 48 hours' time to decide, or else prepare to face the music," Chandrashekhar alleged in his letter made available through his advocate Anant Malik.

Chandrashekhar had on January 7 alleged that was transferred to jail-13 from jail-14 for no reason. "This jail-13 is a jail where heinous hardcore criminals and gangsters are lodged, comparatively to jail-14 where I was previously lodged. The strength of jail-14 was 250 and the strength of jail-13 is 1600," he said. -- ANI

In his maiden speech on the House floor, Rich McCormick, 54, said that one of the five doctors in his community is from India and described Indian-Americans as great patriots, upstanding citizens and good friends.

"Although they make up about one per cent of American society, they pay about six per cent of the taxes. They're amongst the top producers, and they do not cause problems. They follow the laws," McCormick said in a short speech on the floor of the US House of Representatives.

Georgia has a significant number of Indian-Americans. "I rise to this occasion to appreciate my constituents, especially those who have immigrated from India. We have a very large portion of my community that's made up of almost 100,000 people who have immigrated directly from India," he said.

"One out of every five doctors in my community are from India. They represent some of the best citizens we have in America, we should make sure that we streamline the immigration process for those who come here to obey the law and pay their taxes and be the most creative and productive in society," McCormick said.

"God bless my Indian constituents and I look forward to meeting with the (Indian) Ambassador," McCormick said in his brief remarks.

08:44   'Bade bhai' Sharad Yadav: Lalu's message from hospital
Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad on Thursday condoled the death of former Union minister Sharad Yadav and asserted that their mutual differences "never resulted in any type of bitterness".

Prasad, who has engaged in electoral battles with Yadav in the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat, issued a video statement from his hospital bed in Singapore where he is recuperating from a kidney transplant surgery.
Referring to Sharad Yadav as "bade bhai" (big brother), Prasad recalled his old association with the deceased leader.
"He, besides late Mulayam Singh Yadav, Nitish Kumar and myself learnt politics of socialism from Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur," said the septuagenarian.
"On many an occasion, Sharad Yadav and I fought with each other. But our disagreements never led to any bitterness," said the RJD supremo who had held out a helping hand to Yadav when the latter was struggling to come out of political wilderness.
Forced out of the Janata Dal-United, which he once headed, following a tiff with the de facto leader, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Yadav had floated Loktantrik Janata Dal.

At Prasad's instance, he was given an RJD ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and his daughter Subhashini Yadav was fielded by the party in the assembly polls a year later.

08:10   We count a lot on India's G-20 leadership: IMF MD
At a time when the world is faced with continued economic slowdown and social distress, the international community counts a lot on India's leadership of G-20, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund said Thursday.

"India, which is the president of G-20 countries, remains among the countries that perform better than global average and by a good percentage," IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told reporters during a media roundtable.

India formally assumed the G20 (Group of 20) Presidency on December 1. The next G20 Leaders' Summit at the level of Heads of State/Government is scheduled to be held on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi.

"We count a lot on India's leadership of the G-20. Because it is such a critical time for the world to protect its own wellbeing by protecting the integrated global economy. I hope that India will do that huge global service keeping us together," she said.

Georgieva lauded India for embracing digitization.

"What we see us working extremely well for India is how the country has taken digitization that was accelerated by COVID-19 to be a strong comparative advantage, both for public policy and for private sector growth," the IMF Managing Director said in response to a question.

For public policy, because the combination of digital ID and digital public infrastructure allows India to move policy support on a digital platform and to target extremely well those who are recipients of the support as well as to become a bright example of vaccinations done in a prioritized and highly effective manner, she noted.

"On the private sector side, because that has become a fertile ground for very rapid expansion of branded financing and enterprises. And that India intends to take to the G-20 as an area to build comparative strength," she said.

According to Georgieva, one of the priorities in the G-20 is how to make digitization built on a public platform, public infrastructure that allows everybody to plug in and significantly reduces costs of digitization; how that can be a source of growth and employment. So that is definitely one area.

India, she noted, has done some painful reforms which are now paying off. The country, she said, faces difficulties on the climate front, very dramatic impact on agriculture because of very severe vulnerability of climate shocks, especially droughts and high temperatures.
