23:53   Robert Vadra under court fire for stay in Dubai
A Delhi court has expressed its displeasure with businessman Robert Vadra's explanation that he stayed in Dubai for a medical emergency in August this year while travelling to the United Kingdom via UAE and said this is a violation of terms and conditions of the permission granted to him.

The court also issued a show cause notice asking Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi why his fixed deposit receipt deposited in terms of the order dated August 12 be not forfeited for violating the terms and conditions of the permission granted to the applicant.

The special judge Neelofar Abida Parveen on Monday said that she was unable to accept the assertion on the sole affirmation of applicant Robert Vadra mentioned in the affidavit that the applicant was forced or compelled under the circumstances on account of medical exigencies to stay in UAE.

The court further observed that copy of the travel tickets indicated that Vadra was supposed to stay from August 25 to 29 in Dubai then he was about to travel to London on August 29.

The court had granted permission to Robert Vadra on August 12 to travel abroad to the UK via UAE, Spain and Italy for four weeks.

The court noted that the flight and hotel details mentioned in the said undertaking given by Robert Vadra clearly indicated that he will travel to the UK via UAE as permitted by this court. -- ANI

23:04   Turkish Prez again rakes up Kashmir issue in UN
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday once again raked up the Kashmir issue during his address to world leaders at the high-level UN General Assembly session in New York.

"India and Pakistan, after having established their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago, they still haven't established peace and solidarity between one another. This is much unfortunate. We hope and pray that a fair and permanent peace and prosperity will be established in Kashmir," Erdogan, a close ally of Pakistan, said at the general debate.

His comment comes less than a week after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in the Uzbek city of Samarkand on Friday during which they reviewed the full range of bilateral relations and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in diverse sectors.

In recent years, the Turkish leader has referred to the Kashmir issue in his address to world leaders at the high-level UN General Assembly sessions, causing strain in ties between India and Turkey. -- PTI

Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and he would play the remaining two and a half years of their term like a fast-paced T20 match.

Shinde became chief minister in June this year after breaking up the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and toppling the Sena-NCP-Congress coalition government.

Fadnavis, meanwhile, also said that attempts were being made by some people to spread fear that Mumbai will be separated from Maharashtra.

"I am making it clear that Mumbai will remain an integral part of Maharashtra and all Marathi festivals will be celebrated without any restrictions," the BJP leader said.

Palghar MP Rajendra Gavit on Tuesday said 352 persons have died on the stretch between Ghodbunder to Talasari on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, and former Tata sons chairman Cyrus Mistry was among the latest victims on the road.

He had asked the police to register First Information Reports for negligence against concerned project director and divisional engineer for failing to ensure maintenance of the highway, Gavit told reporters at Vasai in the district.

Industrialist Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident on a bridge on the Surya river in Palghar district on September 4.

21:24   PIL in high court to regulate Congress's Bharat jodi yatra
A plea, seeking a direction of the Kerala high court to the state government and the police to ensure Congress party's Bharat jodo yatra does not take over the entire road, has been filed.

The public interest litigation seeks to ensure the yatra, led by Waynad MP Rahul Gandhi, takes up only half of the road and leave the rest for vehicles.

The petition filed by advocate Vijayan K is listed for hearing on Thursday before a Bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly.

Besides regulating the march, which began from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7 and intends to cover 3,570 km 150 days to reach Kashmir, the PIL also seeks directions to get from the Congress expenses incurred in deployment of the huge police force along the yatra route.

The PIL arrayed as parties -- the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, KPCC president K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly VD Satheesan.

The plea contends that "inaction on the part of the respondents (state, police and Congress) in regulating the procession was quite arbitrary, illegal and unjust."

It further contends that the manner of conducting the procession obstructed the free flow of traffic and the general public and was "bringing the life of the common man to a halt in the areas through which it passes." -- PTI

The south-west monsoon on Tuesday started withdrawing from parts of south-west Rajasthan and adjoining Kutch in Gujarat, with at least eight states, including rice bowl states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar reporting deficient rains.

It was for the first time since 2016 that the monsoon started withdrawing in the third week of September.

"The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon passes through Khajuwala, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Naliya," it said.

19:15   Queen's funeral: Flags back at full mast as mourning period ends
Flags on British government buildings around the world returned to full mast on Tuesday as the period of national mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II has ended.

The flags had been flown at half mast across the United Kingdom for 12 days as a mark of mourning over the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen was buried in a private ceremony in Windsor on Monday evening, following a state funeral in London and a military procession to Windsor Castle.

But the Royal Family will continue to observe another week of mourning.

Senior royals are not expected to carry out any public duties during this time, the BBC reported.

Flags at royal residences will remain at half-mast until 8 am local time on September 27 -- the day after their mourning period ends.

Buckingham Palace has said royal household staff, representatives of the household on official duties and troops committed to ceremonial duties will also observe the extended mourning period.

An intensive clean-up operation is underway after hundreds of thousands of people across the UK flocked to London to watch the Queen's funeral.

Council workers wearing black ribbons and bows were deployed on Monday evening to clean up litter and remove sand on roads in the London borough of Westminster.

Buckingham Palace has said royal household staff, representatives of the household on official duties and troops committed to ceremonial duties will also observe the extended mourning period.

2,000 people, including foreign royalty and world leaders, gathered yesterday at Westminster Abbey for Her Majesty's funeral.

19:10   Navy Day 2022 to be shifted out of Visakhapatnam
Authorities have taken a decision to hold the annual Navy Day celebrations later this year outside Visakhapatnam, sources said on Tuesday.

The choice of the new venue is "not finalised yet", but Mumbai is being considered, they said.

The Army Day Parade next year will be held outside Delhi, official sources had said earlier in the day.

The Air Force Day on October 8 this year will also be held outside its traditional venue of Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, IAF officials had recently said.

Asked if the Navy Day celebrations too will be shifted to a venue outside Visakhapatnam, a naval source said, "Yes" while asserting that "the new venue has not been finalised yet".

"The country celebrates December 4 every year as Navy Day in commemoration of Operation Trident when the ships of the Indian Navy delivered a lethal and powerful missiles attack on Karachi harbour, paving way for a great victory for India during the 1971 Indo-Pak war and in memory of those who made supreme sacrifice," according to the Indian Navy website.

A large number of Indian Navy ships and other vessels of different classes and capabilities gather in Visakhapatnam annually to mark the historic day with grand celebrations.

Last year, India also celebrated the golden jubilee of the victory of the 1971 war as 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh'.

18:16   Kejriwal 'heckled' at Vadodara airport
Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday claimed he was heckled at the Vadodara airport in Gujarat by a group of people who raised slogans hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kejriwal also claimed supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party never raise slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi when he visits Gujarat and alleged that BJP and Congress are 'united' to abuse him and AAP.

"When I landed at the airport in Vadodara, some 30-40 people shouted, 'Modi', 'Modi', 'Modi' in front of me. The situation in Gujarat is such that BJP is going to be in great trouble," the Delhi chief minister told reporters.

Kejriwal is in Vadodara to address a town hall meeting as part of the campaign to reach out to various sections of society ahead of the elections, due in December this year.

"It is said that there are 66 seats in urban areas (in Gujarat) which BJP never lost. But this time, they will be in trouble. They are not going to win all these seats (in upcoming Assembly elections)," Kejriwal said.

He alleged BJP and Congress were abusing him because he talks about the well-being of the people of Gujarat.

"BJP supporters never shout slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi when he visits Gujarat. This is because both parties are united against me and AAP. Both BJP and Congress shout slogans against Kejriwal. They are united and abuse me," he alleged.

In the coming days, Congress and BJP will field national-level leaders in Gujarat 'who will abuse me', the AAP leader said.

Kejriwal is leading the AAP's poll campaign in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

During his multiple visits to the state, he had promised a string of 'guarantees' including free power and the generation of jobs.

He also assured the welfare of various sections, including women, youth, lawyers, auto-rickshaw drivers, government employees etc.   -- PTI

17:47   Actor Armaan Kohli gets bail in 2021 drugs case
The Bombay high court on Tuesday granted bail to Bollywood actor Armaan Kohli in a case of alleged possession of 1.2 grammes of cocaine, more than a year after he was arrested.

A single bench of Justice N W Sambre granted bail to Kohli on a surety of Rs 1 lakh and imposed a slew of conditions on him.

While granting relief, the HC said the 50-year-old actor, arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in August 2021, shall not indulge in similar activities and directed him to appear before the drug law enforcement agency once a month.

Justice Sambre said if Kohli flouts any of the conditions imposed on him, the NCB can seek cancellation of his bail.

The court said it would pass a detailed order later.

The NCB had booked Kohli under various provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) for consumption, possession and financing of banned contraband.

The actor was taken into custody by the NCB following the arrest of a Nigerian national in the case.

Kohli has featured in several Bollywood films and also participated in a popular TV reality show.

He has acted in films like Jaani Dushman, Kohra, Veer, Dushman Zamana and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, among others.

17:04   Should Indian sports be cleansed of politics, asks Varun Gandhi
BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Tuesday highlighted incidents of "disrespectful" behaviour towards sportspersons and asked if Indian sports should be cleansed of politicians and their representatives to reach its zenith. Gandhi tweeted videos of two incidents.

One showed athletes at a state-level kabaddi tournament in Saharanpur being served food kept on toilet floor. In the other West Bengal Governor La Ganesan is seen nudging Indian football talisman Sunil Chhetri allegedly to make way for him in photo frames during the Durand Cup prize distribution ceremony in Kolkata recently.

"Is the success of Indian sportspersons despite the system rather than due to it? "This constantly disrespectful behaviour is a great shame for our nation. Should Indian sport be cleansed of politics, politicians & their administrative representatives in order to reach its Zenith," he tweeted.

The kabaddi tournament was hosted from September 16 to 18 in which over 300 players from 16 divisions of the state took part. Additional Chief Secretary (Sports) Navneet Sehgal said Saharanpur District Sports Officer Animesh Saxena was suspended on Monday. PTI

16:56   Yatra should have begun from Guj: Prashant Kishor
Former political strategist Prashant Kishor on Tuesday said that Congress's `Bharat Jodo Yatra' should have started from Gujarat or any other BJP-ruled state. He was speaking on the sidelines of a program where he met local leaders and activists supporting the cause of the separate Vidarbha state.

"It would have been better had the Congress started its Bharat Jodo Yatra from Gujarat where elections are due later this year, or other BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh," Kishor told PTI when asked about the ongoing campaign.

The Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, began from Tamil Nadu. Notably, there was a buzz earlier this year about Kishor joining the Congress, but he later said that he declined the offer to head its election strategy.

Interacting with pro-Vidarbha supporters, he called for a united effort by people of the region to realize the dream of a separate state. -- PTI

The attacks range in severity but the intention behind them matter, she said. India's number in the global press freedom index is 150 out of 180, she further said and added that attacks on dissenters and journalists are unfortunately not new nor limited to India, but it is the intensity in which the attacks have taken place in the last decade is something to be concerned about -- PTI

16:10   Shinde govt lying about Vedanta move: Ajit Pawar
NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Tuesday dubbed as "complete lies" the Maharashtra government's claim that Vedanta-Foxconn had decided to take their project to Gujarat when the Maha Vikas Aghadi was in power in Maharashtra.

The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government and the opposition have been holding each other responsible for the multi-billion project going to neighbouring Gujarat.

The joint venture semiconductor project of the Indian conglomerate Vedanta and Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, proposed to be set up near Pune city earlier, will come up in Gujarat now.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government, which comprised the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, collapsed in June this year after Shinde led a revolt against the Sena leadership.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday alleged that a "10 per cent commission" had to be paid when the MVA was in power for every subsidy that was announced.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, Ajit Pawar, the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, challenged the government to conduct a probe into the charge that money was being asked by some in the MVA government which led to the (Vedanta-Foxconn) company deciding to set up its plant in Gujarat.

"They (BJP) are in power at the Centre, state and have other agencies with them. Let them probe, then things will be clear," Pawar said.

He said there are reports that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is going to Delhi, and urged the CM to make every effort to bring back the Vedanta-Foxconn project.

"Some people are spreading rumours that Vedanta had taken the decision (to set up its plant in Gujarat) before they (the new government led by Eknath Shinde) came to power, which is complete lies," he said.

A high power committee under the state chief secretary met on July 15 while the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government collapsed in June, Pawar said.

On Friday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said after assuming charge in June-end this year, he had met Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal and the state offered a tailor-made package to the company to match up to the Gujarat offer, but he was told a decision to move the project to the neighbouring state was in its final stages.

"The decision was taken even before we came to power. When we came to power, we tried every bit. The ones who did nothing are pointing fingers at us," Fadnavis had said. PTI

15:42   UK police make 47 arrests in Leicester riots
The UK police said on Tuesday that they have made 47 arrests as part of an ongoing operation to deter further disorder in the eastern England city of Leicester, which saw scenes of violence over the weekend.

The development comes as the Indian High Commission in London issued a strongly worded statement condemning the violence against the Indian community and called for protection for those affected.

Leicestershire Police said a 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon during clashes in the city.

Amos Noronha, from the local area, appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court after his arrest during Saturday's incident and was quickly charged due to "overwhelming evidence". "The sentence is reflective of the fact that this was a serious offence and he has ended up with time in prison, said Rob Nixon, Temporary Chief Constable at Leicestershire Police.

"We will not stand for this unrest in our city. There is an extensive policing operation ongoing, acting on information and reports of gatherings and offering community reassurance. Be reassured: we are working to keep you safe and to arrest and bring to justice those that are causing harm in our communities," he said. It follows a weekend of what the police termed as "serious disorder" and "significant aggression" as Hindu and Muslim groups clashed in the wake of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup cricket match in Dubai at the end of last month.

"A policing operation to deter further disorder continued in east Leicester In total, 47 people have been arrested for offences in relation to the unrest in the east of the city. Some of those arrested were from out of the city, including some people from Birmingham, Leicestershire Police said.

15:04   Over 2.5L people saw Queen's lying in state
An estimated over 250,000 people saw British Queen Elizabeth II lying in state in London when her coffin was displayed for public viewing for a little over four days before the funeral, according to a report on Tuesday.

The Queen died aged 96 at her Balmoral estate in Scotland on September 8. People queued 24 hours a day from late Wednesday until 6.30 am on Monday, the day of the Queen's funeral, to see her coffin in Westminster Hall. The line stretched from parliament along the south bank of the Thames and past Tower Bridge to Southwark Park.

Culture secretary Michelle Donelan told Sky News that more than a quarter of a million "went through parliament" but that it was an approximate figure and the government is still "crunching the final numbers".

The mayor of London's office said an estimated 80,000 were in Hyde Park, 75,000 in ceremonial viewing areas and 60,000 on South Carriage Drive. Overall numbers were much higher as crowds formed on virtually the entire route to Windsor, where Thames Valley Police said 100,000 turned out, the report said.

The last member of the public to see the monarch said she went through the queue twice on the same night.

Footballer David Beckham was among those to pay their respects and others spoke of making new friends with people around them in the line. On two occasions, the Queen's children and grandchildren held vigils around the coffin as the public continued to file past. 14:55   Scindia to verify 'drunk' Punjab CM allegations
Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday said he will look into the allegations that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was deplaned from a Delhi-bound flight at the Frankfurt airport as he was "drunk".

The minister asserted that it was important to verify the facts.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday alleged that Mann was deplaned from a Lufthansa flight at the Frankfurt airport because he was in an inebriated state. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa sought an inquiry into the matter and shot off a letter to Scindia.

"This was an incident on international soil. We will have to make sure that we verify the facts. It is up to Lufthansa airline to provide the data. Based on the request that has been sent to me, I will certainly look into it," Scindia told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

Lufthansa News, in a statement, said that the Frankfurt to Delhi flight departed later than its scheduled time due to a delayed inbound flight and an aircraft change. In response to a user asking about the flight delay, Lufthansa News tweeted, "Our flight from Frankfurt to Delhi departed later than originally planned due to a delayed inbound flight and an aircraft change."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has dismissed the Opposition's charge as baseless and bogus. Mann returned from his eight-day trip from Germany on Monday where he had gone to attract investments.

The 3,570-km yatra had started on September 7. "We have completed 275 km of Bharat Jodo Yatra. We would have complete 285 by today. Priyanka Gandhi will join the yatra. She is working out to join in Kerala," he said.

When asked about the election of the Congress president that is scheduled to take place on October 17, Ramesh said that all the party workers are focussed on making the Bharat Jodo Yatra a success.

Referring to the reports of Shashi Tharoor getting the nod from Sonia Gandhi to contest the election for the party chief post, Ramesh said that nobody needs to take permission from Rahul or Sonia Gandhi to file the nominations and anybody is free to contest the election.

The remarks came after Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor on Monday received the nod from Sonia Gandhi to contest in the upcoming poll for the party president's post, sources said. Tharoor received interim-party president Sonia Gandhi's go ahead after he met her in Delhi.

14:37   A family says goodbye to a hero, a father, a husband
Anton Gerashchenko, whose Twitter bio says he is an 'Ukranian patriot' tweets this image writing, "The hand with the blue and yellow bracelets found in Izyum belonged to Serhii Sova, a 36 year old Warrior from Nikopol who fought in the 93rd brigade. His wife recognized him by the tattoos on his body and the bracelets - their kids gave him to dad. RIP, Serhii."

The other picture showing the hand with the bracelet is too grim to be used, but it is what Ukrainians have to endure every day as so many loved ones do not return alive from the brutal war now in its seventh month.

14:21   Kashmir's 1st multiplex screens Lal Singh Chaddha
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday inaugurated the valley's first multiplex in Sonawar area of the city, ending the three-decade wait of the movie buffs to watch their favourite stars on the big screen.

"Inaugurated INOX multiplex theatre in Srinagar. Congratulations to the people, Sh. Vijay Dhar & INOX Group. A major socio-economic revolution is sweeping through J&K in the last 3 years, Sinha tweeted soon after inaugurating the multiplex. He said, It is a reflection of a new dawn of hope, dreams, confidence and aspirations of people."

The multiplex management held a special screening of Aamir Khan-starrer 'Lal Singh Chaddha' after the inauguration ceremony. The regular shows will start from September 30 with the screening of Vikram Vedha, starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan.

The first multiplex in Kashmir will have three movie theatres with a total capacity of 520 seats. The premises will also have a food court aimed at promoting the local cuisine.

The opening of the multiplex, which will be operated by INOX, comes close on the heels of the Lieutenant Governor inaugurating multipurpose cinema halls -- one each in the twin Pulwama and Shopian districts.

The cinema halls have reopened in the valley after three decades as theatre owners downed their shutters in the Valley due to threats and attacks by militants in 1989-90.

The Valley had seen nearly a dozen stand-alone cinema halls functioning till the late 1980s, but they had to wind up businesses after two militant outfits threatened the owners. Though authorities made attempts to reopen some of the theatres in the late 1990s, militants thwarted such efforts by carrying out a deadly grenade attack on Regal Cinema in the heart of Lal Chowk in September 1999. -- PTI

14:10   Stones pelted at at Emraan Hashmi's crew in J-K
A youth was arrested for allegedly pelting stones at the film crew of Emraan Hashmi-starrer Ground Zero in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.

Some media reports claimed the actor was injured in the incident that took place on Sunday when the crew was shooting in the Pahalgam area.
Hashmi, however, said the reports are "inaccurate".
After the film shooting ended at 7:15 pm on September 18, a miscreant pelted stones at the crew members, the Anantnag police said in a tweet.
"Accordingly FIR no. 77/2022 was registered in Police Station Pahalgam. The miscreant was identified and arrested," it said.
Hashmi and the film crew have been shooting for 'Ground Zero' in Kashmir for the past two weeks and have not faced any issues. The incident in Pahalgam was an isolated one and involved only one person, the officials said.
Hashmi dismissed reports that he was injured in the stone pelting.
"The people of Kashmir have been very warm and welcoming, it has been an absolute joy shooting in Srinagar and Pahalgam. The news of me being injured in a stone pelting incident is inaccurate," the actor tweeted. -- PTI

13:04   Heads roll after players served food in toilet
The Regional Sports Officer of Saharanpur, Animesh Saxena, has been suspended by the Sports Directorate of the Uttar Pradesh government after videos of food made for women kabaddi players, competing in a state competition, were served from inside a toilet.

Some videos of players collecting their food from a toilet surfaced on the internet in which players were seen with plates and containers having rice inside a toilet.

In a letter issued by the Sports Directorate, the suspension of Animesh was announced.

"The Chief Secretary of Sports Department made aware through a letter that photos of food meant for kabaddi players participating in an event held in Saharanpur being found in a toilet have surfaced on social media, causing immense slander against the department and the government. It seems that regional officials and stakeholders' defective operations led to this incident and the Chief Secretary instructed for strict action against Regional Sports Officer, Saharanpur, Animesh Saxena," read the letter.

The letter added that Animesh was asked for a clarification behind this incident, but he could not provide an explanation for it. Hence, he was suspended as per the Uttar Pradesh Government Servant (Discipline and Appeal) Rule, 1999.

Following the incident, Additional District Magistrate Rajnish Kumar Mishra said, "I saw through social media that food was served to players in unhygienic conditions. In this matter, the District Magistrate has asked me to submit a report in three days. Whatever facts will come to light in my report, I will submit them to the DM."

District Magistrate Akhilesh Singh further said, "There was a state-level tournament in Saharanpur, which received some negative reporting. The report about the incident is being made. Since it was a huge competition in which a lot of children participated and reports of improper arrangements have surfaced, the matter will be looked into seriously and action will be taken against the official at fault in a week." -- ANI

12:45   World Bank approves $150 million loan for Punjab
The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today approved a loan of USD 150 million to the Indian state of Punjab to help the state better manage its financial resources and improve access to public services.

The international financial institution, in a statement, said it would support the state's efforts to strengthen the institutional capabilities of various government departments, manage fiscal risks and make informed policy choices to support sustainable growth.

"Punjab's growth has been below potential. A combination of fiscal challenges and institutional capacity constraints means that scarce resources are spread thin across development priorities," the statement added.

The new projects will support the state's development goals by strengthening the planning, budgeting and monitoring functions, and leveraging digital technology, besides increasing accountability in the public procurement systems by supporting the state-wide implementation of new legal and policy reforms.

"The World Bank is pleased to be a partner of the state of Punjab in the state's effort to deliver timely, cost-effective and good-quality public services, which is critical for inclusive development," Auguste Tano Kouame, the World Bank's Country Director in India, was quoted in the statement. -- PTI

12:36   Sonia summons KC Venugopal to Delhi
AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal has been urgently called to Delhi by Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi for organizational discussions. He was participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra and is now coming to Delhi when the Yatra reached Pattanakkad, Alappuzha.

The coming election for the post of Congress president could see a contest with Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor yesterday conveying to Sonia Gandhi that he was considering contesting and she assuring him that she would remain "neutral" in the event of a contest.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is still hoping that former party president Rahul Gandhi will change his mind and contest. In the event of Rahul remaining firm on his decision, Gehlot could enter the fray -- and the party could witness a contest for the top post after 22 years.

11:34   HC nod to demolish part of Narayan Rane's house
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Mumbai civic body to demolish the unauthorised construction at Union minister Narayan Rane's bungalow in Juhu area here, noting that it violated the Floor Space Index (FSI) and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.

A division bench of Justices R D Dhanuka and Kamal Khata said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cannot be permitted to consider and allow the second application filed by a company run by the Rane family, seeking regularisation of the unauthorised construction as it would encourage "wholesale unauthorised constructions".

The court directed the BMC to demolish the unauthorised parts within a period of two weeks and submit a compliance report to the court one week thereafter.

The bench also imposed a cost of Rs 10 lakh on Rane and directed for the amount to be deposited towards the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority within two weeks.

Rane's advocate Shardul Singh sought that the court stay its order for six weeks so that he could approach the Supreme Court in appeal.

The bench, however, rejected it. The court dismissed the petition filed by Kaalkaa Real Estates, a company owned by Rane's family seeking directions to the BMC to decide their second application uninfluenced by the orders passed by civic body earlier. The BMC had in June this year rejected the regularisation application, noting that there were violations in the construction. -- PTI

10:39   Maha govt clears 181 industrial plots sanctioned by MVA
Amid a row over a Vedanta-Foxconn multi-billion project going to Gujarat, the Maharashtra government has after a review cleared 181 plots sanctioned by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for industrial projects.

The Eknath Shinde-led state government had asked the industry department to review 191 plots of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) which were sanctioned by the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government after June 1 this year.

Out of these, 181 plots have been cleared and the remaining 10 are under review and a decision will be taken soon, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government has been facing flak after Vedanta-Foxconn chose Gujarat to set up its multi-billion semiconductor plant.

Shinde, who led a revolt against the Shiv Sena leadership in August this year, was sworn in as the CM of Maharashtra on June 30 after the MVA government collapsed.

The CM on Saturday said the government has not given a stay on the allotment of industrial plots in the state. "No such decision about a stay on the allotment of plots to industry has been taken. A review has been taken. The government is committed to take maximum service to the investors coming here, he had said in Aurangabad. PTI

10:26   Tharoor, Gehlot emerge probables for Cong prez
Ashok Gehlot, who is considered to be close to the Gandhi family, and Shashi Tharoor, who got the nod for the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, have emerged as top probable contenders for the office of the party chief in case Rahul Gandhi decides not to enter the fray.

Amid speculation that Ashok Gehlot could be running for the party president, the election for which is set to take place next month, sources close to the Rajasthan Chief Minister said that he is "trying to persuade Rahul Gandhi" to contest rather than his own nomination. This comes amid buzz of Gehlot being a leading choice for the party's president post in the election scheduled to be held on October 17, the result of which will be declared on October 19.

The speculation gained traction after Gehlot met Sonia Gandhi at her residence in the national capital a few weeks ago, in which, according to the sources, the Congress interim president had asked him to be prepared for the poll to decided the party chief.

"Ashok Gehlot says that rather than thinking of running for Congress President he is trying to persuade Rahul Gandhi to do so. He remains a loyal soldier of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi," the sources said.

However, Gehlot has maintained distance from any such reports by refraining from making comments when asked whether the election would have a long-term impact on his politics in Rajasthan.

Many believe that Gehlot is backed by the top leadership to run for the post. -- ANI
