21:36   Uddhav's brother Jaidev shares stage with Shinde
Jaidev Thackeray, the elder brother of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, on Wednesday evening shared the stage with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the rebel faction's Dussehra rally at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

Jaidev Thackeray's estranged wife Smita was also present at the MMRDA ground in BKC, the rally site in suburban Mumbai, along with Nihar, the son of late Bindumadhav Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray's eldest brother.

Champa Singh Thapa, a trusted aide of the late Bal Thackeray who served the Shiv Sena founder for 27 years, was also present at the event.

Talking to reporters, Smita Thackeray said she was invited to the rally by Shinde, who heads the rebel faction of the Shiv Sena.

Jaidev Thackeray, son of Bal Thackeray, said to share an uneasy relationship with his younger brother Uddhav Thackeray.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction has organised its own Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai.

Both Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray claim their faction is the 'real' Shiv Sena.

Shinde's rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray's leadership had led to the collapse to the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in June.  -- PTI

20:39   Prez skips Dussehra celebrations at Red Fort
President Droupadi Murmu skipped the Dussehra celebrations held at the Red Fort ground today due to 'unforeseen circumstances', said the president of the Luv Kush Ramlila Committee.

Telugu actor Prabhas and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal attended the Dusherra celebrations.

"Yesterday, we received a letter stating that President Droupadi Murmu cannot attend the function due to unforeseen circumstances. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and actor Prabhas will attend Dusherra celebrations today", said Arjun Kumar, president, Luv Kush Ramlila Committee.

Effigies of Raavan, Kumbh Karan, and Meghnaad have been installed in Delhi's Red Fort ground.

However, President Murmu tweeted and sent her Dussehra wishes to the countrymen.

"Hearty congratulations to all the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami. This festival of Dussehra signifies the victory of morality over immorality, truth over untruth and good shadow over evil. I wish that this festival brings happiness, peace and prosperity in the lives of all the countrymen," she tweeted.

After two years of low-key celebrations due to Covid-19, Delhi's famous Luv Kush Ramlila committee is ready again to celebrate Dussehra with all the customary pomp and glory this year.

Sharing details, Kumar said that, unlike in previous years, nine effigies have been raised for the grand finale.

He said the committee wanted darkness and negativity to lose and more and more people to know about Indian culture, especially children.

The committee has also kept environmental issues in mind while planning the event.

"We have also thought of the environment. We don't want the air, in which every citizen of Delhi lives, to become polluted. So, this time there will be crackers used. All the effigies will be made of grass and paper only. We will instead use the cracker sounds of previous functions to give the audience the experience of crackers," said Kumar.

Kumar said the Ram Lila organised by his committee had also drawn a huge response.

"Many big names took part in this year's Ram Leela. But some major names were Union Minister Ashwini Kumar Chaubey, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Delhi Minister Vijender Gupta," said Kumar.   -- ANI

18:43   No terror link found to murder of DG Lohia
Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Singh on Wednesday said that no terror angle has emerged during the investigation in the murder case of Director General (DG) of Prisons H K Lohia.

Lohia was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a house in the Udaywala area of Jammu on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday and the police had arrested the suspected accused Yasir Ahmed for his killing.

Ahmed was the househelp of DG prisons who had been working at Lohia's house for nearly six months and he was reported to be 'quite aggressive' and 'under depression' as per some documentary evidence that was seized by the police reflecting his mental state.

"In the initial investigation into the incident of Lohia's death, it has come to fore that one domestic helper Yasir Ahmed, resident of Ramban is the main accused," ADGP Mukesh Singh informed on Tuesday, adding that the CCTV footage collected from the incident spot showed him running after committing the crime.

"The interrogation with the accused is still underway, his disclosures in the matter are being corroborated with the field investigation," Singh said, adding that accused Ahmed has confessed to his crime.

J-K DGP Dilbag Singh said on Tuesday that Lohia had been staying at his friend's place for the past few days when Ahmed attacked him in the room (on the pretext of helping with some ailment) when the two were together.

DGP Dilbag Singh said that the accused latched the door from inside and attacked Lohia several times with a sharp weapon, and also tried to suffocate him.

The accused was apprehended by the Jammu and Kashmir Police following a major manhunt launched throughout the night. -- ANI

18:36   Not disgruntled, will prepare to fight 2024 poll from Parli: Pankaja Munde
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pankaja Munde on Wednesday said she was not disgruntled over not getting any post, and would start preparations for contesting the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections from Parli.

Munde, daughter of BJP stalwart late Gopinath Munde, was speaking at her customary Dussehra rally at Sawargaon Ghat in Beed district.

"Struggle is part of everyone's life. Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had to struggle. Late Gopinath Munde had to struggle throughout his entire political career. He got into government for only four and a half years," she said.

She was carrying forward the legacy of Jan Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya, Pankaja further said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda had seen the crowds at her earlier Dussehra rallies and asked her to work for these people, she said.

"People think their leader should get something and there is nothing wrong with that. I am not holding any post since 2019 Assembly polls but I am not disgruntled," the former state minister said.

She, however, made it clear that she wanted to contest again from Parli, where her estranged cousin and Nationalist Congress Party leader Dhananjay Munde had defeated her last time.

"But the party organisation is above any person. I am not disgruntled with anyone. I shall start preparations for 2024 polls if the party gave me a ticket," she said.

She changed herself as much as she could, and now it was the turn of those who wanted her to change, she said.

Munde was a cabinet minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government in the state between 2014 and 2019.

But she did not make it to the cabinet when the BJP came to power again this June in alliance with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.  -- PTI

17:46   Amit Shah pauses speech during azaan
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday briefly stopped his speech during a rally in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir as 'azaan' or Muslim call to prayer was going on from a nearby mosque.

Five minutes into his about half-an-hour speech at Showkat Ali stadium in this North Kashmir district, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader paused and asked those on the stage 'if something was going on at a mosque'?

When someone on the stage told him that 'azaan' was going on, Shah stopped his speech, attracting a huge round of applause and chanting of slogans in his favour from the gathering.

After a brief moment, he said the call for prayer has now stopped and asked if he would continue his speech.

"Should I start or not? Say it loudly, should I start," he asked and then went on with his speech.

Earlier, soon after his arrival, Shah started his speech much to the delight of the people who had been waiting for hours since early morning.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitender Singh, who were also present on the stage, did not address the gathering.   -- PTI

16:19   3 get Chemistry Nobel for attaching molecules
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Wednesday awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 to Carolyn R Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K Barry Sharpless.

Bertozzi from Stanford University, US; Meldal from University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Sharpless from Scripps Research, US have been awarded 'for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry'.

'The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2022 #NobelPrize in Chemistry to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry,' the official Twitter feed of the Nobel Prize said in a tweet.

'Barry Sharpless has just become the fifth individual to be awarded two Nobel Prizes. He follows in the footsteps of double #NobelPrize laureates John Bardeen, Marie Sklodowska Curie, Linus Pauling and Frederick Sanger. Sharpless was awarded the chemistry prize in 2001 and 2022,' The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 is about making difficult processes easier.

Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal have laid the foundation for a functional form of chemistry -- click chemistry -- in which molecular building blocks snap together quickly and efficiently.

Carolyn Bertozzi has taken click chemistry to a new dimension and started utilising it in living organisms.

Chemists have long been driven by the desire to build increasingly complicated molecules.

In pharmaceutical research, this has often involved artificially recreating natural molecules with medicinal properties.

This has led to many admirable molecular constructions, but these are generally time consuming and very expensive to produce.

"This year's Prize in Chemistry deals with not overcomplicating matters, instead working with what is easy and simple. Functional molecules can be built even by taking a straightforward route," says Johan Aqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.   -- ANI

14:26   Record-setter mountaineer killed in avalanche
Ace mountaineer Savita Kanswal, who had set a national record by climbing Mount Everest and Mount Makalu within a span of 15 days, was among those killed in the avalanche at Draupadi ka Danda-II in Uttarkashi district.

Principal of the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Col Amit Bisht confirmed her death on Wednesday.

Her body is among the four bodies retrieved so far.

A 41-member team of mountaineers was returning after climbing the peak when they were hit by the avalanche on Tuesday.

Kanswal worked as an instructor at NIM and had accompanied the team of trainee climbers to Draupadi Ka Danda-II.

As the news of her demise broke, there was an outpouring of grief in her Lonthru village in the district.

Kanswal had set a national record by climbing Mount Everest and Mount Makalu within a span of 15 days earlier this year.

She had quickly carved a niche for herself in the world of mountaineering despite being relatively new to the field, Col Bisht said.

Kanswal had done her basic, advance, search and rescue and mountaineering instructor's courses from the NIM in 2013 and had been working as an instructor at the institute since 2018.

Col Bisht said Kanswal was one of the best instructors at the institute. Born to Radheshyam Kanswal and Kamleshwari Devi, she was the youngest of four sisters.

Kanswal, who had humble origins, was ambitious and had the courage and resolve to fulfil her dreams, Col Bisht added. -- PTI

13:41   Won't allow screening of Adipurush: VHP
The Vishva Hindu Parishad on Wednesday raised objections to the portrayal of Lord Ram, Lakshman and Ravana in the teaser of Adipurush, claiming that it 'ridiculed Hindu society'.

The organisation also warned that the film would not be allowed to be screened in theatres.

Ajay Sharma, Prachar Pramukh of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) Sambhal unit, told reporters here that the way in which Lord Ram, Ravana and Lakshman had been portrayed in Adipurush was a mockery of Hinduism.

"The values of Hindu society have been ridiculed. Hindu society will not tolerate this," he said.

Adipurush, a big budget adaptation of the Ramayana, is fronted by Baahubali star Prabhas, who features as Lord Ram.

It is scheduled to release next year. Sharma said the way Ravana had been depicted was not in line with the Ramayana and related religious scriptures.

"The VHP will not allow this film to be screened in theatres," he added.

Expressing his displeasure at the Central Board of Film Certification, the VHP leader said the board was working in an arbitrary and irresponsible manner.

"If the board is not able to perform its duties, then the government should dissolve it," he said.

A 1.46-minute teaser of the film, directed by Om Raut, was launched on Sunday in Ayodhya. And the blowback was immediate with hashtags like #BoycottAdipurush and #BanAdipurush gaining speed.

The multilingual period saga sees Saif Ali Khan play the role of a 10-headed demon king called Lankesh.

With a beard, fierce eyes and a buzz cut, this Lankesh seems barbarism personified and many called out the filmmakers for the apparent Islamisation of Ravana.

The portrayal of Hanuman, with a beard, without a moustache and dressed in leather, also attracted criticism.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said the film attacked the sentiments of Hindus, while Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra warned that legal action would be taken if scenes showing Hindu religious figures in the 'wrong' way were not removed.  -- PTI

According to NIM Principal Colonel Amit Bisht, 10 bodies were spotted on Tuesday out of which four were recovered.

Rescue operations had to be halted due to darkness and inclement weather on Tuesday.

The avalanche struck at about 8.45 am on Tuesday when the team of trainee mountaineers and instructors from NIM was returning after summitting, Colonel Bisht had said.

The team members got stuck in crevasses following the avalanche, he had said. -- PTI

10:38   Bhagwat seeks new population policy for all
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said India should have a population policy prepared after comprehensive thought and be applicable to all communities equally.

Speaking at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's Dussehra rally in Nagpur, Bhagwat said community-based population imbalance is an important subject and should not be ignored.

Population imbalances lead to changes in geographical boundaries, he said.

The new population policy should be applicable to all communities equally to strike a balance, he said.

There has to be a balance among the communities in this country, he added.

Pointing out at China's One family one child policy, Bhagwat said, "While we are trying to control the population, we should see what happened in China. That country went for the one child policy and now it is getting older. With 57 crore youth population in India, we will remain a young nation for next 30 years," Bhagwat said.

"However, what will happen to India after 50 years? Will we have enough food to feed the population," he added.

Bhagwat also stressed on people starting their own businesses and not relying solely on government jobs.

"All government jobs put together, only 30 per cent population will be covered. Rest of the population will have to start their own businesses to create more employment," he said. -- PTI

00:56   Elon Musk offers to proceed with Twitter buyout deal: Report
In a surprise turn of events in the Twitter buyout saga, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reportedly offered to proceed with his $44 billion purchase of the microblogging website.

Musk is proposing to continue with $54.20 per share to buy Twitter, Reuters news agency reported citing Bloomberg News

After the news broke, Twitter's share price increased to 12.7 per cent before trading was stopped for the second time.

On the contrary, Tesla's shares dropped by about 3 per cent.

The Reuters report said the Tesla chief made the proposal in a letter to Twitter.

Musk has been locked in a bitter legal battle with Twitter since announcing in July this year that he was pulling the plug on his $44 billion purchase of the company following a complex, and months-long courtship.

Musk had cancelled the deal, claiming that he was misled by Twitter concerning the number of bot accounts on its platform.

These allegations were forthrightly rejected by the company.

The latest report on the Twitter buyout deal comes ahead of the Delaware Court hearing on October 17, where the two sides are expected to clash over the multi-billion dollar buyout deal.

"This is a clear sign that Musk recognized heading into Delaware Court that the chances of winning vs. Twitter board was highly unlikely and this $44 billion deal was going to be completed one way or another," Reuters quoted Wedbush analyst Dan Ives as saying.

Earlier, Twitter had sought an order directing Tesla CEO to complete deal at $54.20 per share. -- ANI

00:22   Rushdie among bookie favourites in UK to win Nobel
Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of Booker Prize-winning Midnight's Children, who is recovering after being stabbed in New York in August, is tipped among the bookmakers' as the favourites in the UK to win this year's Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday.

The Guardian' newspaper analysed the betting odds to find that the lowest odds for Rushdie winning were 13/2 on Tuesday afternoon.

If the 75-year-old celebrated British American novelist wins, he will become the first Indian-born writer to win the prestigious honour since Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel for Gitanjali' in 1913.

The prize worth 10-million Swedish krona, conferred by the Nobel committee on the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction, is to be announced on Thursday.

Rushdie's prolific body of literary works includes the controversial The Satanic Verses', which led to a fatwa from the former supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini.

The attack on New York-based Rushdie on August 12 came 33 years after the religious edict calling on Muslims to assassinate the author over the allegedly blasphemous novel.

Hadi Matar, 24, has been charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder and one count of second-degree assault and has pleaded not guilty to both charges. -- PTI
