Frightened Ukrainians take to metro stations in the capital Kyiv today as air raid sirens rang out across the country's main cities following Russia's launch of its feared military attack, reports ANI quoting AFP.

Citizens had been awakened by the sound of explosions on the city's fringes, but many others heard nothing.

The mayor of Boryspil, the suburb where the Kyiv's main airport lies, said some of the explosions were due to the shooting down of drones of unidentified origin.

In Mariupol, the sea port city that many fear will be the first major target because of its strategic importance and valuable heavy industry, people waited to take the bus to work, while many more hastily packed their luggage on to a car and left.
