A court in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district on Thursday remanded BJP leader Bernard N Marak to six days' police custody in a case related to explosive materials "found" in his farmhouse from where he was accused of running a sex racket.

Marak, a former militant leader, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh on July 29 on the charge of operating the sex racket.

The court of chief judicial magistrate in Tura had on Wednesday sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

However, he was arrested again from the district jail on Wednesday night in the case under Explosive Substances Act. When produced before the court, it sent him to police remand again.

A total of 35 gelatine sticks and 100 detonators, four crossbows and 15 arrows were seized from the farmhouse, the police have said.

Earlier on July 22, six minors were rescued from the farmhouse owned by the BJP leader.

The police arrested 73 people from there, seized their cars and recovered alcoholic beverages and condoms.

The BJP is a part of the state's ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma of the National People's Party.

Marak, also an elected member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, has claimed he was innocent and alleged he is the target of political vendetta by the chief minister and fears for his life. The state BJP also backed his claim. -- PTI

23:03   Pak media co seeks NOC for Laal Singh Chaddha
A media group in Pakistan has approached the information ministry for a no objection certificate on the countrywide screening of Aamir Khan-starrer Bollywood movie Laal Singh Chaddha

According to media reports, if the Cinepex Media Group gets the NOC it will be the first time since 2019 that an Indian film will be released in Pakistani theaters.

In 2019, the then government placed a ban on Indian content in Pakistan after escalating tensions between the two countries over the Indian government's revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two Union territories.

The ties between India and Pakistan nosedived after New Delhi abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution.

India's decision evoked strong reactions from Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian envoy.

India has repeatedly told Pakistan that Jammu and Kashmir was, is and shall forever remain an integral part of the country.

Since the scrapping of the special status on August 5, there has been no Bollywood release in Pakistan and cineplexes have mostly tried to survive on the release of Hollywood and Pakistani movies.

A source said since the film is being globally distributed by Paramount Pictures, it is being imported into Pakistan by the Cinepax Media group. -- PTI

16:28   Gotabaya leaves Singapore for Thailand
Sri Lanka's ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Singapore for Thailand after his short-term visit pass expired on Thursday, according to a media report.

Rajapaksa boarded a flight from Singapore to Bangkok, after Thailand confirmed a day before that it had received a request from the current Sri Lankan government for him to visit the country.

Responding to media queries, Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority said that Rajapaksa left Singapore on Thursday, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday confirmed a temporary visit to Thailand by the 73-year-old embattled Sri Lankan leader for humanitarian reasons, and said he promised not to conduct political activities in the kingdom during his search for permanent asylum in another country.

Rajapaksa, who is currently in Singapore after fleeing Sri Lanka in July amid mass anti-government protests, is seeking refuge in Thailand as his Singapore visa runs out on Thursday.

After flying to the Maldives on July 13, Rajapaksa then fled to Singapore, where he announced his resignation a day later after months of protests over the country's economic crisis.

'This is a humanitarian issue. We have made a promise that it's a temporary stay. No (political) activities are allowed, and this will help him find a country to take refuge in,' Prayut was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post newspaper on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said the ousted president can stay in Thailand for 90 days as he is still a diplomatic passport holder, the report said.

Don said the Sri Lankan government did not oppose the visit and the Thai government would not make accommodation arrangements for him.

The visit would not pose conflicts with Colombo as acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe had worked for him when he was in power, he added.

The minister said a condition for Rajapaksa's stay was that he should not cause problems for Thailand.   -- PTI

10:58   I would rather lose than win on a false promise: Rishi Sunak
Britain's prime ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak has insisted that he would rather lose the Conservative Party leadership race to replace Boris Johnson than win on a false promise on how he plans to tackle the economic crisis.

In an interview with the BBC, the British Indian former Chancellor said he was committed to helping the most vulnerable families with the cost-of-living crisis and felt a 'moral responsibility to go further' and provide 'extra help' over the winter.

The issue has become the key dividing line between him and his rival, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who has pledged tax cuts which the former finance minister insists will benefit wealthier households rather than those who need it most.

I would rather lose than win on a false promise, Sunak, 42, said.

"What I'm determined to do is help people across this country through what will be a very difficult winter. My first preference is always not to take money off people in the first place," he said.

As the candidates continue to be grilled by Conservative Party members who will be voting in the election in hustings up and down the United Kingdom, the issue of soaring inflation and prices has dominated the agenda.

"People can judge me on my record," reiterated Sunak in his BBC interview on Wednesday night, referring to his work as Chancellor through the COVID lockdown.

"People can judge me on their record -- when bills were going up by around 1,200 pounds earlier this year, I made sure the most vulnerable received around 1,200 pounds," he pointed out.

Sunak also promised to 'go further' than what he has already announced if elected prime minister.

"I know millions of people are worried about inflation, particularly the cost of their energy bills. What I've said if I'm prime minister I will go further in supporting those families who most need support because the situation is worse than when I announced those measures earlier this year," he said. -- PTI

10:30   China ship approaches Lanka despite defer request
Yuan Wang 5, the Chinese research and Survey vessel, continues to proceed to Sri Lanka's port of Hambantota despite the authorities of the island country asked Beijing to defer the visit, local media reported.

On Tuesday, Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it has requested China to defer the visit of the Yuan Wang 5, News First reported.

However, on Tuesday the vessel increased its speed and reached a point some 600 nautical miles away from the southern Sri Lankan port of Hambantota.

It is now reported that the vessel abruptly reduced its speed to 5 knots late last night, changing direction towards the Andaman Islands.

However, again on Wednesday morning, the Yuan Wang 5 changed back to its original course.

The vessel that can travel at speed above any other standard vessel had reduced its speed to 4 Knots, reported News First.

Earlier, on Monday, in a statement, the Sri Lankan foreign ministry said the Chinese vessel Yuan Wang 5 was scheduled to dock at Chinese-leased Hambantota port on August 11 for refuelling and leave on August 17.

The foreign ministry further stated it wishes to reaffirm the enduring friendship and excellent relations between Sri Lanka and China which remain on a solid foundation, as reiterated most recently by the two Foreign Ministers Ali Sabry and Wang Yi at a bilateral meeting in Phnom Penh on August 4.

Meanwhile, reacting to the media reports over the vessel, the Chinese foreign ministry said that Beijing 'always exercises freedom of the high seas in accordance with law and fully respects coastal countries' jurisdiction over scientific research activities in waters under their jurisdiction'.

China also urged 'relevant parties' to see its marine scientific research activities in a rational light and stop disrupting normal exchange and cooperation between China and Sri Lanka.

'It is completely unjustified for certain countries to cite the so-called 'security concerns' to pressure Sri Lanka,' it said.

Designated as a research and survey vessel, Yuan Wang 5 was built in 2007 and has a carrying capacity of 11,000 tonnes.

During this significant visit to the key Sri Lankan port, it could conduct satellite research in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean region, prompting security concerns for India.

Hambantota port, located around 250 km from Colombo was built with high-interest Chinese loans.

The Sri Lankan government struggled to repay the debt they had taken from China following which the port was handed over to the Chinese on a 99-year lease.   -- ANI
