21:20   No vax effective without yoga, ayurveda: Ramdev
Yoga guru Ramdev Thursday questioned the efficacy of allopathy against COVID-19 once again saying vaccination alone is not enough to protect people from the virus and they need to be supplemented with yoga and ayurveda.

He said this on the sidelines of an event in reply to a question on why US President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid even after taking the booster dose of the vaccine.

"Without the support of yoga and Ayurveda, no vaccine can immunise you permanently against coronavirus, no matter how big you are, a president or a big doctor yourself," Ramdev said.

Top officials of WHO have also fallen victims to Covid, he said.

He claimed the world is being misled by medical science in the name of vaccines.

"The world will return to yoga and ayurveda again. People are growing tulsi, aloe vera and giloy in their kitchen gardens and reaping their health benefits," Ramdev said on the sidelines of the function at Patanjali Yogpeeth to mark his close aide Balkrishna's birthday. -- PTI

The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Thursday rejected the bail application of journalist Siddique Kappan who was booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in Hathras conspiracy case.

A single bench of Justice Krishan Pahal passed the rejection order on Thursday.

Prior to this, the bench had reserved its order on August 2 after conclusion of arguments by the counsels of the accused and the state.

A Mathura court had rejected Kappan's bail plea after which he had approached the HC.

Kappan, a reporter for Malayalam news portal Azhimukham and secretary of the Delhi unit of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), was arrested along with three others in Uttar Pradesh in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras to report on the gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman.

15:40   ED kept me in room with no window: Raut to court
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, on Thursday told a special court in Mumbai that during the custody, the central agency kept him a room that had no window and ventilation.

Raut told this to special court judge M G Deshpande, designated to hear matters related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), on Thursday. The court extended Raut's ED custody till August 8.

The ED had arrested the Sena MP on Sunday midnight in connection with the alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of Patra 'Chawl' (old row tenement) in suburban Goregaon and related financial property transactions involving his wife and alleged associates.

On Monday, the court had remanded him in ED custody till August 4.

At the end of his remand, the agency on Thursday produced him in the special court, which extended his ED custody.

During the hearing, when the court asked Raut if he had any complaint against the ED, he said there was nothing in particular.

However, he added that the room where he has been kept has no window and ventilation. The court then sought an explanation from the probe agency.

Special public prosecutor Hiten Venegaokar, who appeared on behalf of the ED, said Raut was kept in an AC room and hence there was no window. Raut later said that although the AC system is in place there, he cannot use it due to his health condition. The ED then assured the court that he would be kept in a room with proper ventilation.

On Monday, the ED had told the court that Raut and his family received "proceeds of crime" worth over Rs one crore generated out of alleged irregularities in the housing redevelopment project.

15:23   Kharge vs Goyal in Parl: Modishahi, ED slammed
The Congress on Thursday raised the issue of ED action and police gherao of its party office and the residences of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, with Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge saying in the Rajya Sabha that he has been summoned by the ED at a time when Parliament is in session.

Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, however, claimed that the government does not interfere in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies and said Congress leaders should face the law, not run away from it and allow Parliament to function.

Raising the issue during the Question Hour, after an Opposition uproar in the House over the alleged misuse of agencies by the government to target leaders, Kharge said this is an attempt to intimidate them and they will not be cowed down.

"This House is functioning and I am the leader of the opposition parties. But right now, I have received a summons from the ED to appear before it when a Parliament session is on. Right now, when Parliament is functioning, is it fair on the part of the ED to summon me?" he asked amid shouts of "shame, shame" from the Opposition benches.

Noting that he is a law-abiding citizen and has to leave for the ED office at 12.30 pm, Kharge said, "I do not want to avoid the law and I want to follow the law."

He also said the residences of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi have been gheraoed by police. "If we carry on like this, will our democracy remain alive? Will we function as per our Constitution? This is being purposely done to demoralise us, destroy us and intimidate us. But we will not be afraid or intimidated and will fight," the senior Congress leader said, demanding that there be a discussion on the issue in the House.

Congress's chief whip in the Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh also alleged that "Modishahi" is reaching a new low as Kharge was summoned by the ED in the middle of a Parliament session.

"Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, was summoned by the ED when Parliament was in session. He, of course, left around 12:20 pm and presented himself. This is Modishahi reaching new lows," the former Union minister said on Twitter. Responding to his remarks, Goyal said this government does not interfere in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies and accused the Congress of interfering in their work when it was in power.

He also rebutted Kharge's claims and said Congress leaders should face the law and not run away from it. "They may have been interfering in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies when they were in power," he said. "If anyone has done any wrong, the law will take its course. Whatever the LOP said is totally baseless. The matter has gone to the Supreme Court. The Congress leaders are on bail and the Congress leaders and the LOP should follow the law instead of running away," Goyal said.

"Our government does not in any manner interfere in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies and allows them to do their work. Their government used to interfere in the functioning of law-enforcement agencies. Our government has not done anything like this," he added.

14:02   Assam becoming hotbed of jihadi activities: CM
Assam has become a hotbed of jihadi activities with five modules having links with Bangladesh-based terror outfit Ansarul Islam busted in five months, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

"Six Bangladeshi nationals belonging to Ansarul Islam had entered Assam to indoctrinate youths, and one of them was arrested when the first module was busted at Barpeta in March this year," Sarma said at a press conference here.

Indoctrination of Muslim youths in private madrasas by Imams from outside the state is alarming, he said. "Jihadi activity is very different from terrorist or insurgency activities. It starts with indoctrination for several years, followed by active participation in promoting Islamic fundamentalism, and finally going for subversive activities, the CM said.

The Bangladeshi nationals, who entered the state illegally in 2016-17, operated several training camps during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Only one of these Bangladeshis have been arrested so far, and I appeal to the people to inform the local police in case anybody from outside the state becomes a teacher or an Imam in a madrasa, he said.

13:18   Pelosi meets S Korea leaders, omits Taiwan talks
After her trip to Taiwan, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met South Korean political leaders in Seoul on Thursday but avoided making direct public comments on cross-Strait relations that could have further increased regional tensions.

Pelosi, the first incumbent House speaker to visit Taiwan in 25 years, said Wednesday in Taipei that the American commitment to democracy on the self-governing island and elsewhere remains ironclad.

In response, China on Thursday began military exercises, including missile strike training in six zones surrounding Taiwan, in what could be the biggest of their kind since the mid-1990s.

After visiting Taiwan, Pelosi and other members of Congress flew to South Korea a key U.S. ally where about 28,500 American troops are deployed on Wednesday evening, as part of an Asian tour that included stops in Singapore and Malaysia.

She met South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin Pyo and other senior members of Parliament on Thursday. After that hour-long meeting, Pelosi spoke about the bilateral alliance, forged in blood during the 1950-53 Korean War, and legislative efforts to support a push to boost ties but didn't directly mention her Taiwan visit or the Chinese protests.

09:22   US Senate approves NATO membership of Finland, Sweden
Amid threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin that Sweden and Finland would face unspecified retaliation should they join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the United States Senate on Wednesday (local time) approved the applications of both countries to join the alliance.

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve a treaty that would expand NATO to include Finland and Sweden.

However, the accession will only be at the collective will of all 30 member countries since all decisions are taken by consensus.

Therefore, all 30 current members of the alliance must ratify the accession of the two countries.

22 countries have already done so, reported New York Times.

Senators voted 95-1. Only Senator Josh Hawley, Republican of Missouri, voted no. Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, voted present.

The bipartisan support was evident as the tally, was far surpassing the two-thirds support which was necessary to approve the treaty.

Earlier, NATO 30 allies signed accession protocols for Sweden and Finland, kickstarting the process to admit the two Nordic countries into the alliance.

Foreign Minister of Finland Pekka Haavisto and Foreign Minister of Sweden Ann Linde attended the signing ceremony.

"With 32 nations around the table, we will be even stronger and our people will be even safer, as we face the biggest security crisis in decades," declared NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in a press conference after the signing ceremony.

NATO's 30 members formally invited Finland and Sweden to join their alliance at the NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, just seven weeks after both countries handed their applications in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In the first instance, the accession process was blocked by Turkey, a NATO member that raised concerns over the fight against terrorism, however, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Finland and Sweden, Turkey lifted its veto ahead of the NATO Madrid summit.

The next step was for the parliaments of all 30 NATO members to ratify Sweden and Finland's accession to NATO, according to their own national procedures.

08:47   Rs 85L found at home, MP clerk attempts suicide
The Madhya Pradesh police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), probing a disproportionate assets complaint, recovered more than Rs 85 lakh in cash from the Bhopal home of a state government clerk who consumed some liquid that was suspected to be poisonous during a search on Wednesday, an official said.

During the search at the residence of upper division clerk Hero Keswani, currently drawing a salary of around Rs 50,000 per month, an EOW team also recovered documents pertaining to several properties worth crores of rupees, he said.

The search operation continued till late on Wednesday night and a note counting machine was brought to compute the exact value of the pile of cash found at his home located in the Bairagarh area, the official said.

The upper division clerk, attached to the state Medical Education Department, claimed to have consumed bathroom cleaner when the EOW team reached his house, Superintendent of Police (EOW) Rajesh Mishra told PTI.

Keswani also tried to stop officials from searching his home and pushed them, he said.

"He was rushed to the state-run Hamidia Hospital. His condition is stable and he is undergoing treatment for blood pressure-related problems," the SP said.

By the evening, more than Rs 85 lakh in cash had been found besides the documents related to immovable properties and other assets worth crores of rupees at Keswani's residence, said Mishra.

It is estimated that he owns properties worth Rs 4 crore, he said.

Keswani's plush residence, where costly decorative items were found, itself was worth around Rs 1.5 crore, the EOW official said.

The SP said the clerk had started his job at a salary of about Rs 4,000 a month and was currently drawing around Rs 50,000 per month.

Amounts running into lakhs of rupees were found deposited in bank accounts of Keswani's family members.

He had purchased most of the properties in the name of his wife, a homemaker with no source of income, the official said.

Overall value of the assets unearthed during the search will be known only after completion of valuation work and verification of documents, Mishra said.   -- PTI

00:38   Kerala ex-FM gets fresh ED notice in KIIFB case
The Enforcement Directorate has again served a notice to senior Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Thomas Isaac seeking his appearance before it in connection with its probe into alleged violations in the financial dealings of KIIFB when he was the Kerala finance minister in the previous LDF government, sources said on Wednesday.

Confirming the development, CPI-M-run TV Kairali News said Isaac has been directed to appear before the federal agency on August 11.

Isaac has not reacted to the fresh notice.

Earlier, the ED had served a notice to the senior Marxist leader in the second week of July seeking his appearance before it on July 19.

He, however, did not appear before the probe agency, saying he had to attend classes at a party-run institute in Thiruvananthapuram.

Then, Isaac had termed the ED notice to him as a 'political move' by the BJP government at the Centre, alleging that it was misusing all investigation agencies for its political gains.

He had said before the last assembly election, the ED, the CAG and even the Income Tax Department was after the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. -- PTI
