US deploys 4 warships amid Pelosi's Taipei visit

As US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi headed to Taipei on Tuesday amid intensifying warnings from China, four US warships, including an aircraft carrier, were positioned in waters east of the island on "routine" deployments.

The carrier USS Ronald Reagan had transited the South China Sea and was currently in the Philippines Sea, east of Taiwan and the Philippines and south of Japan, reports say. '

Pelosi is expected to arrive in Taiwan today and meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. She is also expected to hold a meeting with other high-ranking officials while in Taiwan and leave the island on Wednesday, as per reports.

Last month, Beijing had warned the US against the House of Representatives Speaker's Taiwan visit saying that it will act strongly and take countermeasures if the US side insists on going ahead with the visit.
