BJP MP Varun Gandhi slams actress Kangana Ranaut for her comments at a media conclave where she said "India got real independence in 2014", and that "what we got in 1947 was 'bheek' (alms)."

Gandhi, who is the only BJP leader to criticise the government on the farmers' protests and the laws, said on Kangana's remarks, "Sometimes she insults Mahatma Gandhi's sacrifice and penance, sometimes she lauds his killers, and now she has scorned the sacrifices of martyrs from Mangal Pandey to Rani Lakshmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and lakhs of other warriors of India's Independence movement. What do you call this thinking? Is it insanity or treachery?"

In January this year, Kangana was called out for allegedly glorifying Nathuram Godse, the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. On Gandhis death anniversary on January 30, the actress had posted few photos of Godse and tweeted, "Every story has three sides to it, yours, mine and the truth .... A good story teller neither commits nor conceals... and thats why our text books suck ... full of exposition #NathuramGodse."

Kangana was awarded the Padma Shri on Monday. She had said that the award is a reply to all those who question her statements on national issues.
