The West Bengal Assembly election 2021 is likely to witness a direct contest between friends-turned-foes Suvendhu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee at Nandigram.

The decision is understood to have been taken at the BJPs core committee meeting on candidates in Bengal on Thursday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already announced to contest as the Trinamool Congress candidate from Nandigram.

In the BJP meeting, chaired by BJP president JP Nadda, Suvendu Adhikari told the party leadership he wanted to contest from Nandigram.

Suvendu Adhikari was one of Mamata Banerjees most trusted aides and face of the Nandigram movement in Bengal that catapulted the TMC to power in the state 10 years ago. He had switched to the BJP in December 2020. His departure set in motion a rush among the TMC leaders to follow the suit.
