The first phase of the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh has begun today amidst an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath down with Covid-19 himself.

Many leaders had urged for postponement of the panchayat elections in the wake of rapid Covid-19 spread but the state Election Commission said all preventive measures have been taken.

Panchayat polls in the first phase entail 18 districts. Agra, Ayodhya, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Jaunpur, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Bareilly, Rampur, Mahoba, Raebareli, Shravasti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Saharanpur, Hardoi and Hathras will go to the polls.

Polling will take place to elect the district council, block panchayat, village council and ward members with over three lakh candidates in the fray for over two lakh posts. The candidates will contest on 'free symbols' given by the Election Commission.
