18:07   Nepal's lower house passes bill to redraw map
Nepal's Parliament on Saturday unanimously voted to amend the Constitution to update the country's new political map, laying claim over the strategically key areas of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura along the border with India.

Major Opposition parties including Nepali Congress, Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal and Rastriya Prajatantra Party voted in favour of the government bill to amend Schedule 3 of the Constitution to update the national emblem by incorporating the new controversial map.

A two-thirds majority was required in the 275-member House of Representatives or the lower house to pass the bill.

On June 9, the Parliament unanimously endorsed a proposal to consider the Constitution amendment bill to pave way for endorsing the new political map amid the border row with India.

Now, the bill will be sent to the National Assembly where it will undergo a similar process. The ruling Nepal Communist Party commands two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.

The NA will have to give lawmakers 72 hours to move amendments against the bill's provisions, if any.

15:43   India to begin production of Remdesivir drug
India is soon going to have its domestic production of anti-viral Remdesivir drug, which would have safety, efficacy and stability for "restricted emergency use" on COVID-19 patients.

Recently, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Drug Controller General of India has given the approval to Remdesivir for "restricted emergency use" on severely ill hospitalised coronavirus patients.

For this, the country's top drug regulator is evaluating the application submitted by four domestic pharma giants who want to seek the approval to manufacture and sell Remdesivir in India.

"Their applications are being thoroughly studied and examined day and night. It had certain shortcomings for which the respective pharma companies are furnishing their report. The testing of the drug's molecular compound will be done at our government laboratory. When it fulfills the safety parameters at the dose, India would soon have the benefit of its domestic product (Remdesivir) which have efficacy, stability and safety for 'restricted emergency use' on COVID-19 patients," a senior government official said.

"Remdesivir is a drug that is still under trial. Hence, looking at the COVID-19 situation in the country, it has been permitted for 'restricted emergency use' on COVID-19 patients. Doctors have to get the consent-form duly filled by the patient in a prescribed manner before using it," he stated, adding that it is the first drug in India which has such strong control.

"The drug will be administered in the form of infection in five doses. On the first day, a patient will be given two doses followed by one dose for the next four days under the strict monitoring of doctors. The drug has to be given only to those severe COVID-19 patients with oxygen saturation level below 94 and respiratory rate more than 24," the senior government official further said.

He informed that in other countries, patients are being administrated with 10 doses of Remdesivir.

15:14   Females in India may have higher COVID-19 death risk than males: Study
While studies have shown that men are more prone to dying from COVID-19 than women globally, an analysis of case fatalities in India suggests that females may have a higher relative-risk of COVID-19 mortality in the country.

Scientists, including Abhishek Kumar from the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi, used crowdsourced data to provide early estimates for age-sex specific COVID-19 case fatality rate for India.

The study, published in the Journal of Global Health Science, presented an age and sex specific view of mortality from the disease using the measure of CFR, which is the ratio of confirmed deaths in total confirmed cases.

In the research, the scientists evaluated adjusted-CFR to capture the potential mortality among the currently active infections.

According to the study, the CFR among males is 2.9 per cent, while that for females it is 3.3 per cent in India.
The researchers said as of May 20, 2020, males shared a higher burden (66 per cent) of COVID-19 infections than females (34 per cent) but the infection is more or less evenly distributed in under-five as well as elderly age groups.
Males are at a greater disadvantage than females, they said, adding that it is unclear whether males experience a higher risk of mortality throughout the age-spectrum, or if there are sex-related differences in survival risk.

India is the fourth top country globally with the highest number of Covid-19 cases. With 308,993 total cases, India trails countries like the US, Brazil and Russia.

A massive chunk of Indias Covid-19 cases come from Maharashtra, around 32 percent. Maharashtra has over one lakh Covid-19 cases, and when clubbed with Tamil Nadus tally, the two states account for over 45 percent of Covid-19 cases in the country.

Top Covid-19 affected cities come the top-hit states. Mumbai, Pune and Thane in Maharashtra, Delhi, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Chennai in Tamil Nadu and Jaipur in Rajasthan are among the cities with high Covid-19 cases in the country. 12:13   Maha slashes cost for COVID-19 tests by pvt labs
Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday said that the government has reduced the rates of the COVID-19 tests conducted by private laboratories from Rs 4,500 to Rs 2,200.
Tope said the lowering of rates for the tests would provide a relief to the people.

"Rs 2,200 will be charged for collecting the swabs through viral transport media from hospitals, while it would cost Rs 2,800 for collection of swab from home. Earlier, the charges were Rs 4,500 and Rs 5,200 respectively," he said.

The revised rates are the maximum these labs can charge. District collectors can negotiate with private labs to reduce the rates further, Tope said.

"If the private labs charge more than the prescribed upper limit, legal action would be taken against them," he said, claiming that the new rates will be the lowest in the country.

The minister said that at present, there are 91 labs in the state for COVID-19 testing and about four to five are in the pipeline.

11:40   Rahul makes dig at lockdown impact on Covid-19 cases
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday used a quote, often misattributed to Albert Einstein, to hit out at the government over its lockdown strategy to point out that the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has not been halted because of the restrictions.

The former Congress president also used graphs showing the rise in Covid-19 cases during the last four phases of the national lockdown.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, Gandhi tweeted.

His tweet came on a day India reported 11,455 new Covid-19 cases and 386 deaths, taking its infection tally to 308,993 and its toll to 8,884.

On Friday, he had criticised the governments Covid-19 containment efforts and alleged that Indias fast rise among the nations worst-affected by the coronavirus pandemic across the world was due to a lethal blend of arrogance and incompetence.

Rahul Gandhi had also used a graph to show India overtaking other badly-affected countries with a rapid rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country.

India is firmly on its (sic) way to winning the wrong race. A horrific tragedy, resulting from a lethal blend of arrogance and incompetence, he had tweeted on Friday.

Rahul Gandhi has been questioning the Centres handling of the coronavirus crisis.

11:07   Experts to analyse Lonar lake water to know why it turned pink
A team of scientists from the Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) will visit the Lonar lake in Maharashtra's Buldhana district next week and collect its water samples to analyse why it has turned pink, an official said.

The oval-shaped Lonar lake, formed after a meteorite hit the Earth some 50,000 years ago, is a popular tourist hub and also attracts scientists from across the world.

The mean diameter of the lake is around 1.2 km.

The colour of the lake water has recently turned pink, which has not only surprised locals, but nature enthusiasts and scientists as well.

Some experts have attributed it to the salinity and presence of algae in the water body. They have said that this is not the first time the colour change has happened, although it is more glaring this time.

When contacted, Buldhana Collector Suman Chandra said, "Lonar lake comes under the jurisdiction of the forest department as it has been declared a sanctuary. The department has sent water samples to NEERI. Nonetheless, the institute will be sending a team of scientists to the site on June 15 to collect samples for analysis."

"They will analyse the water to know the exact reason behind the change in its colour," she said.

10:43   Petrol, diesel prices hiked for 7th day in a row
Petrol price on Saturday was hiked by 59 paise per litre and diesel by 58 paise as oil companies for the seventh day in a row adjusted retail rates in line with costs since ending an 82-day hiatus in rate revision.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 75.16 per litre from Rs 74.57, while diesel rates were increased to Rs 73.39 a litre from Rs 72.81, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.

This is the seventh daily increase in rates in a row since oil companies on Sunday restarted revising prices in line with costs, after ending an 82-day hiatus.

In seven hikes, petrol price has gone up by Rs 3.9 per litre and diesel by Rs 4.

The freeze in rates was imposed in mid-March soon after the government hiked excise duty on petrol and diesel to shore up additional finances.

Oil PSUs Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL), instead of passing on the excise duty hikes to customers, adjusted them against the fall in the retail rates that was warranted because of a decline in international oil prices.   -- PTI

08:08   Delhi municipal docs threaten mass resignation
An association of medics in Delhi on Friday extended support to resident doctors of two municipal hospitals and threatened to resort to mass resignation if their three months' pending salary wasn't released within a week.

The Municipal Corporation Doctors' Association (MCDA) also wrote to Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, seeking his intervention on the issue.

A copy of the letter has also been marked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The resident doctors at the North Delhi Municipal Corporation's 450-bedded Kasturba Hospital and Hindu Rao Hospital have claimed that they have not been paid salary since March.

Many doctors and other staff have tested positive for COVID-19 till date at both hospitals.

Doctors of the NDMC are putting their lives and their family members in danger every day, MCDA president Dr R R Gautam said.

"Being the frontline COVID health care workers, they should be paid their due salaries," he said.

'Our association fully and unconditionally support the reasonable demands of the resident doctors' associations, and have further decided that if the salaries of the three months of all doctors are not paid in a week, then we may also be forced to resign en masse from our government services,' the letter said.

In the letter, the MCDA said if not that, 'then we may be granted permission to take VRS on a mass level'.

The resident doctors of colonial-era Kasturba Hospital on Wednesday had threatened to resign en masse if their demand was not met by the authorities.

The Delhi high court on Thursday initiated a public interest litigation on the issue.

Jai Prakash, chairman of the standing committee of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, which runs both hospitals said, "The matter is being resolved".

"Representatives of the RDAs of the two hospitals met me on Thursday. We have assured them that we will try to pay their due salaries, if not at once, for one month right now, and then slowly for subsequent months," he said.

"We have explained to them that the MCD is not getting revenues in this coronavirus situation, so they must consider our constraint too," Prakash said.   -- PTI
