UK Prime Minister Theresa May resigns as Conservative Party leader but will continue as PM until a new leadership is chosen.

Reading from a statement outside 10, Downing Street, Theresa May says that she has striven to make the UK a country that works for the many, not the few, and to deliver Brexit.

She says she has done her best to deliver Brexit. "I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal sadly I have not been able to do so."

She will resign as leader of the Conservative party on Friday 7 June. The process to select a new leader will begin in the following week.

May, who has been under constant pressure to step down since having survived a vote of no-confidence in December 2018, had even announced that she would set out her Downing Street exit plan once she had seen the first stage of Brexit through. However, that exit has been precipitated as it became clear that the first stage of Brexit, passage of her Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, is unlikely to go through a fourth parliamentary vote.
