Quite the cliffhanger in Amethi. BJP's Smriti Irani is leading over Rahul Gandhi by 11226 votes from the Gandhi bastion where he has always won quite easily.

Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala, where he is leading by over 2 lakh votes.

Amethi, a dusty, largely rural constituency around 130 km from UP capital Lucknow, features one of the most watched battles in this election.

Smriti Irani campaigned aggressively in Amethi, where she had contested and lost to Rahul Gandhi in 2014 but had managed to reduce his winning margin to 1 lakh. She has visited the constituency regularly over the past five years and launched a relentless campaign against what the party believes to be the Congress and Rahul Gandhi's failures in Amethi.

Rahul Gandhi, locals in Amethi say, has hardly visited his constituency and development work is at a standstill.
