Addressing rumours that she would become a vice president to the eventual Democratic nominee for president, Senator Kamala Harris told reporters that Joe Biden would make a "great running mate" to her once she becomes the Democratic nominee.

Harris had been asked what she thought about rumours of her becoming a vice presidential candidate.

"I think that Joe Biden would be a great running mate," Harris said, swiping at Biden. "As vice president he's proven he knows how to do the job."

Joe Biden served as US vice president to Barack Obama for two terms. He had dropped out of the presidential race in 2008 after winning less than 1per cent in the Iowa caucuses and was picked as Obama's vice president to bring experience to the Democratic ticket.

The prospect of Harris as a vice presidential nominee has been the subject of some speculation, given Biden's current lead in fundraising and polling and the diversity that Harris could bring to the ticket as a woman of colour.
