Sanskrit scholar Sheldon Pollock pays tribute to friend Girish Karnad

Sheldon Pollock, celebrated Sanskrit scholar, Arvind Raghunathan Professor of Sanskrit and South Asian Studies at Columbia University and also the General Editor of the Murty Classical Library of India, Harvard University Press, had a long-standing friendship across two continents, and spanning several decades, with distinguished playwright, actor, filmmaker and scholar Girish Karnad, who died in Bengaluru on Monday.

Pollock, the winner of Rediff's India Abroad Friend of India award remembered his friend with the following tribute: "Girish Karnad was an extraordinary man: an incomparable playwright, a gifted actor, a brilliant thinker, and one of the foremost public intellectuals of his time. A huge loss for India at a time when he has never been more needed.'
