The Delhi Police Monday filed its chargesheet in a court against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, and students Umar Khalid, Anirban, and seven others, in a sedition case lodged in 2016. Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Anand put up the charge sheet for consideration before a competent court on Tuesday. The chargesheet has been filed under IPC section 124A (sedition), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine, forged document), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 149 (unlawful assembly with common object), 147(rioting), & 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested in 2016 year for allegedly organising an event in the JNU campus against the hanging of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru. There was outrage when allegations were made that "anti-national slogans" had been raised.

Shehla Rashid and CPI leader D Raja's daughter Aparajita Raja have also been named in the chargesheet filed in JNU sedition case along with Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and others.

The opposition slammed the police for "working at the behest of the ruling BJP".
