JUST IN: President Ram Nath Kovind gives nod to 10 per cent quota bill for economically weaker section in general category.

On Monday, the Union cabinet had cleared the 10 per cent quota in government jobs and education for 'economically weaker' sections, meeting a key demand of upper castes, a staunch Bharatiya Janata Party support base which has shown signs of a drift from the party.

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a constitutional amendment bill to provide the 10 per cent reservation, with virtually all parties supporting it despite the Opposition calling the proposed law a pre-poll 'stunt' of the Modi government.

A day after Lok Sabha approved The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019, the Rajya Sabha passed the law with 165 voting in favour and seven against.   -- ANI/PTI
