22:16   Padmaavat row: Rajput women seek PM nod for euthanasia
Members of the Jauhar Swabhimaan Manch, a group representing Rajput women in Rajasthan, have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to either stall the release of the film "Padmaavat" or give them the go-ahead for euthanasia.

Earlier, the women had threatened to perform "jauhar" (self-immolation) on January 24 if the government did not intervene to stop the screening of the film. However, now they have demanded that they be given the nod for euthanasia, said Vishwabandhu Singh, general secretary of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena.

The plan to perform "jauhar" has been cancelled, he added.

The women took out a rally yesterday and gave a memorandum, addressed to the prime minister, to a senior district administration official, demanding a complete ban on the film.

Another leader of the fringe group, Dharmendra Singh, said jauhar is "illegal and hence, it was decided to cancel the plan".

Over 1,900 women had vowed to perfom "jauhar" on January 24 in Chittorgarh, he said.

21:15   India toast of town at Davos, from billboards to platters
It's India everywhere in Davos, the snow-covered Swiss resort town once known for health tourism, always frequented by skiing enthusiasts and home to the annual week-long pow-wow of global elite in sub-zero temperatures.

For now, it teems with huge billboards atop buildings and even on buses, promoting India and Indian companies, while the narrow roads made even narrower by heavy snowfall are full of lounges set up by the private and public sector from the country where Indian delicacies are flying off the counters.

Chai and pakodas are in high demand and so are vada pao and dosas. The choices to sit and munch over are plenty there is the Indian government's official India Lounge, while Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra governments too have set up their own lounges. Then, there are plenty of Indian companies with their own setups alongside those of the global ones.

The five-day WEF affair seems to be bigger this year and so does the snowfall, as the first day itself saw roads getting closed and serpentine traffic since morning.

The Geneva-based WEF is hosting its 48th annual meeting here beginning today, where more than 3,000 leaders from across the world are expected to participate in a high-profile talk fest for five days.

PM Modi would deliver the opening plenary address at the WEF summit on Tuesday. He is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven in Davos.

"Jerusalem is Israel's capital, and as such President Trump has directed the State Department to immediately begin preparations to move the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem," Pence said to prolonged applause from Israeli parliamentarians.

"In the weeks ahead our administration will advance its plan to open the United States embassy in Jerusalem. And that United States embassy will open before the end of next year."

20:07   Modi hugs only privileged people, not farmers, jawans: Rahul
Congress president Rahul Gandhi today alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi embraces only privileged people and not farmers, labourers or jawans.

Gandhi's remarks came after Modi defended his trademark hugging of world leaders in a TV interview, saying he was unaware of laid down protocols as he is a common man.

"He claims he is a common man, but embraces only the privileged. Modiji, what is your compulsion...  it's important that farmers, labourers and jawans are also hugged," Gandhi wrote on Twitter.

The Congress chief has often denounced Modis way of greeting world leaders with a hug.

The party had earlier put up a video mocking Modi for hugging world leaders.

For the first time a tableau of All India Radio will be leading a series of 23 tableaux during the Republic Day Parade this year and will feature Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly address 'Mann Ki Baat'.
The AIR said the tableau will have various scenes depicting its journey like Mahatma Gandhi's maiden and only broadcast in the wake of communal riots after Partition and Prime Minister Modi's monthly address.

15:48   WEF ranks India at 62nd place on Inclusive Development Index, below Pak
India was today ranked at the 62nd place among emerging economies on an Inclusive Development Index, much below China's 26th position and Pakistan's 47th.

Norway remains the world's most inclusive advanced economy, while Lithuania again tops the list of emerging economies, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said while releasing the yearly index in Davos before the start of its annual meeting, to be attended by several world leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump.

The index takes into account the 'living standards, environmental sustainability and protection of future generations from further indebtedness', the WEF said.

It urged the leaders to urgently move to a new model of inclusive growth and development, saying reliance on gross domestic product as a measure of economic achievement is fuelling short-termism and inequality.

India was ranked 60th among 79 developing economies last year, as against China's 15th and Pakistan's 52nd position.

The 2018 index, which measures progress of 103 economies on three individual pillars -- growth and development; inclusion; and inter-generational equity -- has been divided into two parts.

The first part covers 29 advanced economies and the second 74 emerging economies.

The index has also classified the countries into five sub-categories in terms of the five-year trend of their overall Inclusive Development Growth score -- receding, slowly receding, stable, slowly advancing and advancing.

Despite its low overall score, India is among the 10 emerging economies with 'advancing' trend.

Only two advanced economies have shown 'advancing' trend.

Among advanced economies, Norway is followed by Ireland, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Denmark in the top five.

Small European economies dominate the top of the index, with Australia (9) the only non-European economy in the top 10.

Of the G7 economies, Germany (12) ranks the highest.

It isfollowed by Canada (17), France (18), the United Kingdom (21), the United States (23), Japan (24) and Italy (27).

The top-five most inclusive emerging economies are Lithuania, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Latvia and Poland.

Performance is mixed among BRICS economies, with the Russian Federation ranking 19th, followed by China (26), Brazil (37), India (62) and South Africa (69).

Of the three pillars that make up the index, India ranks 72nd for inclusion, 66th for growth and development and 44th for inter-generational equity.

The neighbouring countries ranked above India include SriLanka (40), Bangladesh (34) and Nepal (22).

The countries ranked better than India also include Mali, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Ghana, Ukraine, Serbia, Philippines, Indonesia, Iran, Macedonia, Mexico, Thailand and Malaysia.

Although China ranks first among emerging economies in GDP per capita growth (6.8 per cent) and labour productivity growth (6.7 per cent) since 2012, its overall score is brought down by lacklustre performance on inclusion, the WEF said.  -- PTI

13:56   FIR against Husain Haqqani for 'maligning' Pakistan
Pakistan's former envoy to the United States Husain Haqqani has been booked for allegedly giving hate speeches and writing books and articles defaming the military and the government.

Haqqani was named in first information reports lodged by three people in two police stations in Kohat district of northwest Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, accusing Pakistan of 'maligning' in his books, Dawn News reported.

The three FIRs were registered in Cantonment and Bilitang police stations by Momin, Muhammad Asghar and Shamsul Haq.

The complainants alleged that the former ambassador had caused irreparable loss to the country and defamed it.

Asghar alleged in the FIR that Haqqani was a 'mentor of the Memogate scandal' and had issued visas to 'CIA and Indian agents' while serving as Pakistani ambassador to the US.

He served as ambassador from 2008 to 2011 in US and was removed for alleged role in what is known as Memogate controversy.

The sections of the Pakistan Penal Code applied by police in the FIRs are 120B (hatching a criminal conspiracy) and 121A (waging a war against Pakistan).

A police official said that under due procedure, Haqqani should surrender himself to them or he would be declared an absconder.

Haqqani was criticised by parliament for his column in The Washington Post in which he had written that he had helped the US forces in eliminating Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden when the government and the Inter-Services Intelligence had been kept in the dark about the secret operation.

It was about a memo sent to former Admiral Mike Mullen apparently seeking help of the then Obama administration to avert a military takeover in the wake of raid at the hideout of Osama in May 2011.

Haqqani has also served as ambassador to Sri Lanka from 1992 to 1993.  -- PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interviews to two leading TV networks over the weekend may have drawn everyone's attention, but says Churimuri, 'hacks and flacks from Government-run Doordarshan and Press Information Bureau should be blushing at the mild and innocuous questioning given the state of the country, the economy, and institutions.'

11:55   HC to hear AAP's plea today, but party prepares for bypolls
The Delhi high court will hear Aam Aadmi Party's appeal against the disqualifcation of 20 of its MLAs at 4 pm today, reports NDTV.

If the HC rejects the appeal, the party will move the Supreme Court.

However, even as party chief Arvind Kejriwal takes the legal route, he is prepping for bypolls, as the opposition has already sounded the election bugle.

The AAP has a simple strategy for bypolls -- appealing to Delhi voters that the party is being singled out and is the victim of a giant conspiracy.

At the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party office, names are being discussed of likely candidates for bypolls to the 20 seats that will be vacated if the AAP legislators are disqualified.

The AAP has also decided to hold a day-long bandh in Delhi on Tuesday to protest against the sealing drive and the centre's move to allow 100 per cent foreign direct investment in retail.

11:10   Rajasthan, MP move SC to re-impose ban on Padmaavat

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh today moved the Supreme Court seeking recall of its January 18 order by which controversial Bollywood movie Padmaavat was allowed to be released in theatres across India on January 25.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud agreed to hear tomorrow the interim applications of both the states seeking a modification of the apex court order allowing exhibition of the movie.

The states claimed that section 6 of the Cinematograph Act empowers them to stop exhibition of any controversial movie on the grounds of possible violation of law and order.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Viacom 18, the producers of the Deepika Padukone-starrer, opposed urgent hearing on any such interim applications.

The court, however, agreed to hear the applications tomorrow.

The Supreme Court had on January 25 paved the way for the nationwide release of Padmaavat by staying the ban on its screening in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The apex court also restrained other states from issuing any such notification or order banning the screening of the movie.

The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles, is based on the saga of the historic battle of 13th century between Maharaja Ratan Singh and his army of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi

The Haryana and Madhya Pradesh governments have not issued any formal order but had stated that they would not allow the exhibition of the film.

Maintaining that states were under a constitutional obligation to maintain law and order, the apex court had said that this duty also includes providing police protection to persons who are involved in the film, its exhibition and the audience watching it.

10:21   Disqualification of AAP MLAs miscarriage of justice: Yashwant Sinha
Rebel Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha have come out in support of the Aam Aadmi Party over disqualification of its 20 MLAs with the former calling the President's decision a 'tughluqshahi' (dictatorial) order.

In a major setback to the ruling AAP in Delhi, President Ram Nath Kovind has disqualified 20 of its MLAs for holding offices of profit, a decision the party said showed that the constitutional authorities were behaving like "handmaidens of the central government".

Kovind gave his assent on Saturday to the recommendation in this regard by the Election Commission.

'The president's order is a complete miscarriage of natural justice. No hearing, no waiting for high court's order. It is Tughluqshahi of the worst order,' Yashwant Sinha tweeted.

BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha said the 'politics of vendetta' against the AAP would not last long.

'Politics of vendetta or politics of vested interests just don't last long. Don't worry, be happy!,' he said on Twitter.

'Hope, wish & pray that you get divine justice soon, sooner the better. 'AAP' ki team aur khaas kar 'AAP' ko bahut bahut badhaai. Remember, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Satyameva Jayate! Jai Hind!' he said in a series of tweets.

Both the leaders, who were part of the Atal Behari Vajpayee cabinet, have openly aired their displeasure against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government's policies.  -- PTI

08:15   SC to hear pleas in Justice Loya death case today
The Supreme Court will hear on Monday pleas filed by three petitioners seeking a Special Investigation Team probe into the alleged mysterious death of Central Bureau of Investigation judge Justice B H Loya.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, will hear the petitions.

The top court had asked the Maharashtra government earlier in the month to submit the post-mortem report of the CBI judge, who had died in alleged suspicious circumstances in 2014, citing that the 'matter was very serious'.

According to reports, Maharashtra-based journalist B S Lone and  Congress leader Tehseen Poonawala had filed independent pleas seeking a fair probe into the death of Justice Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, involving various police officers and Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah. -- ANI
