23:45   Orange passports: Congress says move discriminatory
The Congress today hit out at the Modi government over its decision that passport holders requiring emigration check would be given an orange-coloured passport, saying the BJP was "obsessed" with orange and the
move "screamed of discrimination".
The Congress put out a video on its Twitter handle, saying the move could encourage "classism" against migrant workers.
The video shows the BJP's top leadership and workers staging protests, besides the RSS workers taking out a march past wearing orange/saffron-coloured clothes/bandanas/flags.
"A passport of a different colour for a certain class of Indians is an invitation for discrimination. #OrangeIsTheNewBlue," the Congress tweet said.
The video also stated that, "We know the BJP is obsessed with the colour orange...the newest target is our passport, that could change from blue to orange."
"This move screams discrimination and could encourage classism against migrant workers...Could this be India's new caste system? Orange is the new Blue," the video says.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi yesterday attacked the Modi government over its decision that passport holders requiring emigration check would be given an orange-coloured passport while others will continue to get a blue one, saying it shows the BJP's "discriminatory mindset".
He also said the move was unacceptable and shows that the government was treating India's migrant workers as "second class citizens".
The passport holders with ECR (Emigration Check Required) status would be issued a passport with orange passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport, an MEA statement had said last week.
ECR is mostly required for less skilled workers.

"Treating India's migrant workers like second class citizens is completely unacceptable. This action demonstrates BJP's discriminatory mindset," the Congress president had tweeted yesterday. -- PTI

21:21   Army well prepared, China unlikely to try any misadventure: GOC-in-C
The Indian Army is very well prepared everywhere and China is unlikely to try any misadventure any more, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, Lt Gen Abhay Krishna said on Monday.
He was referring to the latest incident of a Chinese road-building team breaching into Indian territory at Tuting in Arunachal Pradesh.
Krishna said the Indian Army was there and the Chinese had to retreat leaving behind their equipment.
"We are very well prepared all over. In Tuting, we were there and they had to run away leaving their equipment behind. I don't think they will try any of these misadventures any more," Lt Gen Krishna, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Army Command told newspersons in Kolkata on the occasion of Army Day.
Krisha said this in reply to a question on the preparedness of the Indian Army following the 74-day Doklam standoff at the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction over Chinese road-building efforts inside Bhutanese territory.
Asked whether the Indian Army returned the road construction equipment to the Chinese in Tuting that they had left behind, he said it has been given back to them a few days after.
"We are a very mature nation. So we have returned it. It was returned after few days when they came back and negotiated. We identified to them the line on the ground that from here onwards you cannot get across because the Indian territory starts from there.
"They understood all that and they apologised. They said that it was possibly a mistake on the part of the people on the ground and it won't happen again," the GOC-in-C said.
"We are there, we are prepared for any eventuality. We will do our best and give our best to safeguard the territorial integrity," he asserted.
Krishna said that there has been no change in status quo at Doklam since August 28.
He said that the army is developing logistics and infrastructure on the strategic Bramhaputra River that flows down from China into Arunachal and then into Assam.
"Troops have to move fast in case of any eventuality. The entire Indian Army can't be sitting on the border all the time. We are spread all over, so we need to have all the means available to reach in the least possible time. So we need all these resources available," the Eastern Army Commander said. -- PTI

20:23   Pak summons Indian envoy to protest soldiers' deaths in firing
Pakistan today summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh to protest the deaths of four of its soldiers in firing across the Line of Control.
The foreign office in Islamabad said in a statement that India violated the ceasefire agreement in Jandrot sub-sector of Kotli sector, "resulting in the martyrdom of four Pakistani soldiers, while injuring five others".
The Indian Army today said seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in its retaliatory firing after a ceasefire violation in Jammu and Kashmir where an infiltration bid was also foiled with the elimination of five militants of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group.
Director General (SA & SAARC) Mohammad Faisal summoned Singh and "condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian occupation forces, using heavy mortars," the statement said.
He said despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations.
In 2018, the Indian forces have carried out more than 100 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary in just 15 days, he claimed.
"This unprecedented escalation in ceasefire violations by India is continuing from the year 2017 when the Indian forces committed more than 1,900 ceasefire violations," Faisal alleged.
He said "deliberate targeting of civilian populated areas and troops carrying out maintenance activities is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity, international human rights and humanitarian laws". -- PTI

19:31   Gen Rawat's remarks 'unconstructive': China
China today hit out at Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat for calling Doklam a disputed territory and said that his "unconstructive" comments were not helpful for maintaining peace at the borders.
In an angry rebuttal to Gen Rawat's comments, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said his comments went against the consensus reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit last September to bring ties back on track and preserve peace on the border.
The Chinese reaction came following comments by Gen Rawat two days ago that India needs to shift focus from its border with Pakistan to that of China and spoke of pressure being exerted by Beijing along the Line of Actual Control.
"Last year, India-China relations have witnessed some twists and turns," Lu said and referred to Modi-Xi consensus and the high-level talks since December to improve the ties.
"The dialogue and consultation have shown sound momentum of improvement and development," he said.
"Under such background, the unconstructive remarks by the Indian senior official (Gen Rawat) not only go against the consensus reached by the two heads of state but also do not conform to the efforts made by the two sides to improve and develop bilateral relations," Lu said.
The remarks "cannot help to preserve the tranquillity and peace at the border areas," areas he said.

Asked what were Gen Rawat's specific comments that China is taking exception to, Lu pointed to the Indian Army chiefs remarks on Dokalam wherein he said it is a disputed territory between Bhutan and China.
"I have made myself clear, if the senior official according to the report referred to the Donglang, I think you are clear about our position, Donglang belongs to China and has always been in the effective jurisdiction of China," Lu asserted.
He reiterated China's stand that the Sikkim section of the India-China boundary has been delimited by the 1890 "historical convention" between the then British government and China, which Beijing claims settled the boundary in that particular section spanning to about 200 kms.
China wants India to settle the boundary in that particular section based on the treaty while the two sides negotiated for a settlement for the rest of the LAC which spans about 3,488 kms. So far the two sides have held 20
rounds of border talks to resolve the issue. -- PTI

18:56   UIDAI to introduce facial authentication for Aadhaar
Aadhaar will include face recognition alongside iris or fingerprint scan as a means of verifying users, helping those who face issues in biometric authentication or have worn-out fingerprints, the authority in charge of the national identity card system said today.
The face authentication will be enabled by July to help people facing difficulty in biometric authentication due to old age, hardwork or worn-out fingerprints, the Unique Identification Authority of India said in a statement.
The UIDAI said that face authentication would be allowed "only in fusion mode" meaning along with either fingerprint or iris or OTP to verify the details of Aadhaar holder.
Aadhaar, the 12 digit identifier, is being used for identity authentication across banks, telecom companies, public distribution system, income tax amongst others.
The extent of Aadhaar usage can well be gauged from the fact that an average of 4 crore authentications are being done on a daily basis.
Today's move to allow face authentication came within a week of the UIDAI allowing residents to use a virtual ID to avoid sharing their unique identity numbers when accessing government and other services in a bid to protect privacy.
Face authentication would not require any new reference data as photos of citizens are already on the Aadhaar database.
"This facility is going to help in inclusive authentication of those who are not able to biometrically authenticate due to their worn out fingerprints, old age or hard work conditions," a UIDAI statement said.
Citing the difficulties faced by some residents in using the existing biometric verification mode, the UIDAI said that face authentication offers an additional option for all residents to have "inclusive authentication".
But it emphasised that the same will be allowed "only in fusion mode" along with one more authentication factor either fingerprint, iris or OTP for successful authentication of an Aadhaar holder.
The new method will also be allowed "on need basis".
To facilitate the new authentication service, the Aadhaar issuing body will work with biometric device providers to integrate face modality into the registered devices.
It will also line up Software Development Kits that will have the ability to capture face image, check liveness, and create digitally signed and encrypted authentication input. -- PTI

17:56   Mumbai's Chabad House 'excited' over Baby Moshe's visit
Rabbi Israel Kozlovsky, director of the Chabad House, Mumbai, reacts to the upcoming visit of Baby Moshe. "We are very excited for the upcoming visit of Baby Moshe, who is no more a baby. This is where his life was miraculously saved by the Indian Army. His visit to Nariman House is very emotional and sensitive," the Rabbi said.  Moshe is expected to arrive in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Moshe Holtzberg, the Israeli child who as a toddler survived the 2008 terror attack at a Jewish centre in Mumbai, said he was feeling emotional and excited as he prepared for his homecoming during the six-day visit to India by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Moshe, 11, was two when his parents were killed in the Mumbai attacks at Nariman House (also known as Chabad House) by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists.

The attack on the Nariman House and other locations like the Taj Hotel left 166 people dead.

The boy, standing and crying between his dead parents bodies, was saved in a daring move by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuels, who was hiding in a room downstairs when the attack happened.

15:17   Can't read the future: Adityanath on Padmaavat release in UP
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adtiyanath is non-committal on the release of the controversial film 'Padmaavat' in the state. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie is set for release on January 25.

"I am not a future teller," was his cryptic reply when mediapersons asked him yesterday as to whether the movie would be screened in Uttar Pradesh. During an earlier visit here in November last year, Adityanath had said that Bhansali was no less guilty than those issuing threats to actors and others involved with the film and asserted that if there is any action, "it will be against both the sides". Lashing out at the film-maker, he had said that Bhansali was "habitual at playing with public sentiments".

The state government has said it would not allow the movie's release till certain "controversial portions" are removed. The movie, which was earlier titled "Padmavati", will now be released worldwide on January 25 with the title change suggested by the Censor Board as "Padmaavat".

The chief minister had said, "No one has the right to take the law into own hands whether it is Sanjay Leela Bhansali or anyone else. I feel that if those threatening (the actors of the film) are guilty, Bhansali is no less guilty."

He had also said that if there is any action, "It will be against both the sides." On threats being issued to eliminate actors, Adityanath had said, "Everyone should respect the feelings of each other. And I feel that if everyone has good thoughts and intentions, there would be amity in society."

Gujarat has become the third state after Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan - all ruled by the BJP - to block the controversial Bollywood movie. Starring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, the film was mired into controversy after Rajput Karni Sena raised objections over the content of the film. -- PTI

14:20   PM to Israeli defence companies: Take advantage of FDI
India and Israel today inked nine pacts to boost cooperation in key areas, including cyber security and energy. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu for bolstering bilateral ties in strategic areas. The two prime ministers, accompanied by their respective senior Cabinet colleagues, held delegation-level talks during which they also discussed regional and international issues of mutual interests. Netanyahu, who arrived here yesterday, will also visit Ahmedabad and Mumbai during his six-day stay in India.

PM Modi during the joint statement:

"Today and yesterday we reviewed progress in our relations and renewed our relations on the opportunities that beckon us. We have imparted our shared impatience to the implementation of our earlier decisions. The results are already visible on the ground.

"Our discussions today were marked by convergence to accelerate our engagement and to scale up our partnership. Last year in July, I carried the greetings & friendship of 1.25 billion Indians during my momentous journey to Israel.

"In return, I was overwhelmed by the generous affection & warmth of the Israeli people led by my friend Bibi (Benjamin Netanyahu). We will strengthen existing pillars of cooperation in areas that touch the lives of our peoples. These are agriculture, science and technology and security.

"We exchanged views on scaling up the Centers of Excellence that have been a main-stay of agricultural cooperation. In defence, I have invited Israeli companies to take advantage of the liberalized FDI regime to make more in India with our companies."

13:58   India equally responsible for Pakistan's tragedies: Farooq
Raking up another controversy, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has said that India was equally responsible for the tragedies in Pakistan.

Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir said, "Our neighbour has its own hates. They think we have divided Pakistan by taking Bangladesh. We were not dividers. The tragedy was in the country itself. It was not our creation. That is the tragedy we still face. And don't say we are not involved in their tragedy. As much as they are involved in our tragedy, we are also involved in their tragedies. It's not one-sided."

Recalling a statement by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he called upon the current Indian leadership to build a bridge between India and Pakistan.

"I still remember Vajpayee's word that he made at the border in Pakistan. He said friends can be changed, neighbours cannot be changed. You can either live in peace and progress with neighbours or live in enmity and harm each other which will not be of any good. I would like to say the same thing to present Prime Minister, let us build bridges," he added.  -- ANI

12:51   Army kills 7 Pak soldiers along LoC in retaliatory action
As India celebrates its 70th Army Day, reports coming say that the Indian Army has carried out "retaliatory action" against Pakistan killing 7 soldiers and injuring 4 others in forward areas along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district. Details awaited on this story.

Just this morning, security forces foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, killing five Jaish-e-Mohammad militants. A defence spokesman said that five militants were killed.Earlier, Director General of Police S P Vaid said four JeM militants were killed at Dulanja in Uri sector in a joint operation by the Army, police and other security forces.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat said today that the Pakistan Army has been continuously trying to help terrorists sneak into India along the LoC in J&K. "We are using our might to teach them a lesson.  We will keep effectively retaliating to any provocative action by Pakistan. If we are forced, then we may resort to 'other action' by stepping up military offensive. We will not let anti-India activities succeed at any cost," General Rawat said.

12:31   Speaking up for institutional integrity
Four senior Supreme Court judges have just accused the chief justice of India of misusing his prerogative as master of the roster. Unlike the US Supreme Court, where the nine justices hear every case together, the Indian Supreme Court has multiple benches of varying sizes, and the cases have to be distributed.

The CJI alone has the right to distribute the cases that come up before the court amongst panels of judges called benches. The burden of the letter written to the chief justice by the judges, Jasti Chelameswar, Madan B. Lokur, Ranjan Gogoi and Kurian Joseph, is that he has violated convention by allotting important cases to benches that would not by convention have been given them, benches that the letter describes as "of their preference". The letter suggests that cases of national importance have been selectively assigned without good reason to pliant benches.

12:29   Is Indian civilization a myth?
When the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in 2014, the apprehension in academic publishers' minds that sales of liberal and Left books might suffer was offset by the assumption that the economy would flourish and keep them happy. Also, since no one in the new regime was likely to be interested in looking at anything written too long after the Vedas and the Golden Age of Sanskrit, there did not seem much cause for worry. In any case, the Congress had never failed to cave in when the crunch came to choosing between freedom of expression and mob violence, so the general situation seemed well described by the French cynicism of plus a change, plus c'est la mme chose.

08:47   Business as usual in SC today, no move by CJI to reach out to other judges
On Monday, the four senior judges who addressed a dramatic press conference questioning the conduct of the Chief Justice of India will be attending to work as usual.

It is learnt that CJI Dipak Misra has not made any move to reach out to the four judges since their Friday press meeting.

There had been reports that the CJI could hold talks with the four judges Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph who together with him comprise the Collegium, the highest decision-making body of the judiciary. However, sources close to the judges said that till late Sunday evening, there had been no overture in this regard on Justice Misras part.

However, the sources said, irrespective of the roster for Monday, the four judges would go to the Supreme Court and do their job. They would hear whatever is assigned to them, as scheduled, sources said.

One of the key points raised by the Justices was the selective allocation of cases by the CJI. Calling out the impropriety of the rostering by the Chief Justice didnt amount to going on a strike, the sources said.
