23:28   Hardik vows to continue fast for quota; more support pours in
As his hunger strike entered the third day today, Patidar leader Hardik Patel vowed to continue his fast till his demands for quota for his community members and loan waiver for Gujarat farmers were met.

The Patidar quota stir spearhead, who received more support for his agitation today, hit out at the BJP government, alleging the prevailing situation in Gujarat is "worse than what it was during the British Raj".
Apart from 28 Congress MLAs, Kapil Patil, a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, met Hardik Patel at his residence near here, where he is on an indefinite fast. The leaders extended their support to him.

Patil is a leader of the Loktantrik Janata Dal.
Talking to the media, Hardik Patel claimed a large number of his supporters are trying to reach his residence, but the police are preventing them from coming here.
"Even sitting MLAs are being prevented from coming to my residence. This BJP government and its police are trying their best to stop this agitation. This situation is worse than what it was during the British Raj," he alleged.
"I know the police are working at the behest of the BJP government. But, I want to tell you that no one can stop us now. I am still fit and my hunger strike will continue till both my demands are met," he said.

22:50   US President Trump nixed statement praising McCain: Report
Donald Trump rejected a statement prepared by his aides that praised John McCain, according to the Washington Post, underscoring the US president's enduring scorn for the late senator and war hero.

While tributes have poured in highlighting the Arizona Republican's lifetime of service, Trump issued a single, terse tweet on Saturday that sent his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the bereaved family, without any words for McCain himself.

The absence of a formal communique from the White House has raised eyebrows and was all the more conspicuous after Vice President Mike Pence along with most of the cabinet, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and all the living former presidents had issued their own statements over the weekend.

Citing unnamed current and former White House aides, the Post said Sanders, Chief of Staff John Kelly and other senior staff had advocated for a statement that called McCain a "hero."

The statement was prepared and given to Trump for his approval, but according to the paper the US president told aides he preferred to tweet instead, and it was ultimately not released.

McCain was one of Trump's sharpest critics, and made clear in one of his final wishes as he struggled with brain cancer that he did not want the president to attend his funeral.

The roots of their animosity go back to when Trump announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in June 2015, suggesting that many Mexican immigrants were criminals and "rapists."
McCain denounced him for using language that "fired up the crazies," while Trump said McCain was a "dummy" who had barely managed to graduate from the US Naval Academy.

21:31   Government allows commercial operation of drones from December
The commercial use of drones (unmanned aircraft) across sectors such as agriculture, health and disaster relief under new regulations will come into force from December 1, but delivery of payload, including food items, would not be allowed as of now, the government said today.

All civilian drone operations will be restricted only during day time and flying will be restricted within visual line of sight which usually would be 450 metres, the regulation says.
Except nano drones and those owned by National Technical Research Organisation and central intelligence agencies, the rest  would be registered and issued Unique Identification Number.
The regulation prevents the drones from flying around airports, near international border, near coast line, state secretariat complexes. Besides, they cannot operate in strategic locations, vital and military installations and Vijay Chowk in the capital or be used for wedding photography.

Unveiling the regulations, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said, "Our progressive regulations will encourage a vast Made in India drone industry."

He said the relief efforts in Kerala would have been much more effective had the regulation been in place by now. He said drone market is expected to touch $1 trillion in the coming years.
The registration of the drones, permission to fly will be done digitally through the 'digital sky platform', connected to local police, which will implement "no permission, no take off".

21:16   Air India removes executive accused of sexual harassment from GM post
National carrier Air India has removed a senior executive from the post of general manager for alleged involvement in a sexual harassment case.

The ousted executive, who is now back into flying as a
commander, was accused of sexual harassment by an Air India
air hostess, who had also written a letter to civil aviation
minister Suresh Prabhu in this regards in May.

The removal of the senior executive coincided with the summoning of Air India chairman and managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola by the women and child development ministry to explain reasons behind the delay in completing probe in the case recently.

The air hostess (victim) had also met WCD minister Maneka Gandhi, following which her ministry had sought a report from Air India in the case by June.

She had alleged that she had been harassed for the last six years by the senior executive, describing him as a "predator" and equal, if not worse, than Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood film maker charged with sexual misconduct by leading actresses.

20:12   Warren Buffett in talks to invest up to $350 million in Paytm
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is set to invest about $300-350 million (Rs 2,448 crore) in Indian digital payments major Paytm, according to sources.

The investment, which values the Alibaba and SoftBank-backed One97 Communications at over $10 billion, is likely to be announced in the next few weeks, according to two people familiar with the development.

They did not wish to be identified as the deal is still in the works.

One of the persons said the deal would see Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway pick up 3-4 per cent share in One97 Communications, the parent firm of Paytm.

An email sent to Berkshire Hathaway did not elicit a response, while a Paytm spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.

The deal, if completed, would be Berkshire Hathaway's first investment in an Indian technology ecosystem.

It will also add more muscle to Paytm's operations as it competes against rivals like PhonePe and Google's Tez. Paytm has also been aggressively diversifying its business into areas like investment management and e-commerce.

Paytm has been one of the prominent beneficiaries of the governments move in November 2016 to scrap high denomination notes. It has seen manifold growth in transactions on its platform as well as expansion in number of users.

19:15   70 pc parties tell EC to revert to ballot paper voting: Congress
The Congress today said that over 70 per cent of political parties have put forth a demand before the Election Commission for reverting to the old voting system of ballot paper.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the demand has been made since there are doubts on the credibility of electronic voting machines and asked the EC to reintroduce ballot papers from the next election.

"Around 70 per cent political parties have demanded that the EC revert to the old system of ballot paper during elections. The BJP was singled out today," he told reporters in New Delhi after the Election Commission held a meeting with national and regional parties.

The Congress leader said alternatively the opposition parties have suggested that in at least 30 per cent of the polling booths there should be paper trail of EVMs to check the authenticity of votes cast.

The Congress has demanded that ceiling be imposed on the expenditure by political parties during poll campaign, Singhvi said.
Currently, there is a limit on poll expenses by a candidate in Lok Sabha and state assemblies but there is no limit on the expenses made by a political party during elections.
"Unregulated party expenditure is a dangerous proposition....There should be a ceiling on the expenditure by political parties," he said.
The opposition party has demanded weeding out of all duplicate and false voters from the voters list to ensure a free and fair election.
The party has alleged that there are 60 lakh duplicate names in the voters list for Madhya Pradesh and another 45 lakh for Rajasthan. Both the states go to polls later this year. -- PTI

18:46   Re-induct me or face consequences: Alagiri to DMK
A day ahead of his brother M K Stalin's elevation as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, expelled leader M K Alagiri on Monday hardened his stance saying he will continue with the proposed September 5 march and warned the party of consequences if he was not readmitted.

The former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam strongman in southern Tamil Nadu, who has been flexing muscles since the death of his father M Karunanidhi on August 7, said the rally in Chennai was being organised as per the wishes of the cadres.

"They (cadres) only wanted me to take the lead in organising the march to pay homage (to Karunanidhi)," he told reporters here.

He said he was doing all this to "save" the DMK following the demise of Karunanidhi.

"Kalaingar (Karunanidhi) is not there now. The party has to be saved and protected," Alagiri said.

"If they don't readmit me, they will have to face consequences," he added.

Alagiri has been in political hibernation since his expulsion from the party in 2014 by Karunanidhi. The former union minister was sacked at the height of his fight with Stalin over establishing supremacy in the party.

Indicating a fresh succession war in the DMK, Alagiri had on August 13 claimed that all "loyal" party workers were with him and accused Stalin of blocking his return to the party.

Later, he sought to project himself as someone who was not interested in posts and said he had never hankered for any position in the party even when Karunaidhi was alive.

The DMK, however, has brushed aside Alagiri's claims and rallied behind Stalin.

All along considered the political heir apparent of his father, Stalin is all set to be elected unopposed as the party president -- succeeding Karunanidhi -- at the DMK's general council meet in Chennai tomorrow.

He was the sole candidate in fray at close of nomination last evening.

Replying to a question why he did not register his opposition when Stalin was made the working president of the party, he said Karunanidhi was then alive.

"Kalaingar wanted to readmit me. But these people (the Stalin group) were preventing him then," he said.

The Madurai-based Alagiri, who has been holding a series of meetings in the past few days with his supporters on the Chennai rally, continued the consultation on Monday.

On whether any DMK leader would participate in the march, he said, "I don't want to answer questions based on presumptions."

On Saturday, he had said his strength would be known during the rally.  -- PTI

17:52   Party getting maximum seats will claim PM's post, says Sharad Pawar
Stating that he was "happy" that Rahul Gandhi has made it clear he was not driven by prime ministerial ambitions, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said today the party getting the maximum number of seats after 2019 polls would claim the post.

"Let elections take place, remove these people (BJP) from power. We will sit together. Whichever party has got more seats can claim the prime minister's post," Pawar, 78, said.
"And I am happy that the Congress leader (Rahul Gandhi) has also said he is not in the race for the prime minister's post," he said at a party meeting in Mumbai.
His remarks has come a day after the Congress president said he was not driven by an ambition to become prime minister.
"I dont have these visions. I view myself as fighting an ideological battle and this change has come in me after 2014. I realised that there's a risk to Indian state, to Indian way of doing things and I'm defending that," Gandhi said.
At the Mumbai meeting, Pawar reminded NCP leaders that the United Progressive Alliance, formed after the 2004 general election, had dislodged the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, formed in 1998.
He said he will "try to go to each state and make regional parties which are not with the BJP to join us (the opposition alliance)".
"Congress is strong in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. In Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati-Akhilesh are there. Situation is different in each state. Hence, we will have to get along with parties which are strong in each state," the former Union minister said.
Lok Janshakti Party leader and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Saturday said that there was no vacancy for the post of prime minister in 2019.
He said the united opposition front should start worrying about the 2024 elections, as Modi faces no challenge in 2019. -- PTI

In his order, judge D B Patil said he did not find any proof to establish Kumaraswamy's guilt in the case. Kumaraswamy, who now leads a Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government, had filed a petition seeking dismissal of the case contending that there was no proof to establish that he had de-notified the land. 17:12   Malegaon blasts: Col Purohit seeks SIT probe into his alleged torture
Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit, one of the main accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, on Monday moved the Supreme Court and sought a Special Investigation Team probe into the matter pertaining to his alleged abduction and torture by the Anti-Terrorism Squad in 2008.

Purohit was arrested for allegedly masterminding the blasts in Malegaon in 2008.

16:13   BJP made Vajpayee look small by politicising immersion of his ashes: Sena
The Shiv Sena today accused the BJP of giving a "political colour" to the ritual of immersion of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's ashes, saying the "staged" affection made the great leader look small after his death.

After the 93-year-old leader's death on August 16, the BJP had decided to immerse his ashes in various rivers across the country. In remarks laced with sarcasm, the Sena said while no importance is given to veteran BJP leaders, their ashes are treated with importance.

A true obituary to a person is to carry forward his thoughts, instead of projecting a "staged" affection towards him, it said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

"The vacuum created after Vajpayee's death is being attempted to be filled in (by some) with ridiculous and unsuitable ways. There is no importance given to veterans in the BJP but their ashes are treated with importance," it said.

Vajpayee had a pan-India appeal and senior leaders of various political parties were present at his last rites because he was great in all ways, it noted. "But there have been attempts to make him look small after his death," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said. Instead of the ashes immersion ritual being performed by one party, it should have been carried out as a national event involving all parties, it said. -- PTI

16:07   RSS may invite Rahul to lecture series by Mohan Bhagwat
The RSS may invite Congress president Rahul Gandhi to attend a three-day lecture series by Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat in New Delhi next month, sources in the organisation said today.

The idea is to invite people from different ideologies for the event, a source in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh said, adding that the list is being prepared and may also include CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Indications that Gandhi could be invited came on a day the RSS criticised him for drawing parallels between the Sangh and Islamic radical outfit Muslim Brotherhood.

Giving details of the September event, RSS prachar pramukh Arun Kumar said the Sangh was for the first time organising a three-day lecture series of its chief Mohan Bhagwat on the theme, 'Future of Bharat: An RSS perspective'.

"Bhagwatji will address and interact with select audience comprising prominent citizens on 'Future of Bharat: An RSS perspective' in a three-day lecture series," Kumar told reporters. The event will be held at Vigyan Bhavan from September 17 to September 19. Kumar said people across the country wanted to know and associate with the RSS.

Replying to a question on whether Gandhi will also be invited, Kumar said the list had not been finalised. "It is our prerogative to choose who to invite or not. Leave this to us... But people from all walks of life, including from different political outfits, ideologies and religions, will be invited," he said.

In June this year, Congress veteran and former president Pranab Mukherjee attended an event at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur on the Sangh's invitation, for which he was criticised by the party leaders. The RSS, an ideological mentor of BJP, was the focus of Gandhi's attack during his recent visit abroad. -- PTI

14:35   Amit Shah's tutorial on how to split parties and win 2019
BJP chief Amit shah, the Chanakya of splits and mergers has a grand plan for the general elections of 2019.

We are being told that senior leader Shivpal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party is in touch with BJP chief Amit Shah to split the party soon and align his new party with the NDA.

It's a crisis that has been brewing for a while in UP's first family, all the more apparent now from Sunday's speech by Shivpal Yadav at a public function.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's brother and senior party leader Shivpal Yadav questioned how long he should be waiting in the wings before he is assigned a "responsibility." The SP leader hit out at party chief Akhilesh Yadav saying he is being "ignored" for over a year.

A grand strategy has already been worked out by the BJP to reduce the SP's influence in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll and to ensure BSP chief Mayawati does not pose a big threat to the BJP.

There are many similarities between the Samajwadi Party and the DMK with its familial rifts.  In Tamil Nadu, too, Shah's hand is being seen. If you recollect, the BJP president had said that in October the party will announce its poll strategy in Tamil Nadu. Shah is in fact waiting for a signal from one of the sons of the the late DMK chief M Karunanidhi. Whether the BJP will support MK Stalin or rebel leader MK Alagiri remains to be seen.

Just today, Alagiri said that he and his faction want to join the the DMK. Karunanidhi had expelled Alagiri in favour of Stalin. "If they don't include us in the party, they will have to face the consequences," he said.

Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh together make up 120 seats in the Lok Sabha and the BJP is trying to shore up its numbers in the event of a loss of 15 to 20 seats.

This can be achieved only if it splits and weakens vote banks of the DMK and SP.

All will be revealed in October. Hang on till then.

14:03   India can seek extradition of Choksi without Red Corner Notice: CBI
India can seek extradition of fugitive billionaire Mehul Choksi without an Interpol Red Corner Notice as it is not a mandatory requirement for the process, the CBI has told the Ministry of External Affairs.

In a communication to the ministry earlier this month, the agency said the purpose of a Red Corner Notice is to locate an absconding accused which has already been achieved in Choksi's case after confirmation from Antigua that he is their citizen, officials said.

They also said that having an RCN is of little value now as Antigua has granted him citizenship and Choksi is now an Antiguan passport holder. The agency has communicated to the ministry that it has already written to its counterpart agency in Antigua for the provisional arrest of Choksi, who is the alleged mastermind of the over 2 billion USD bank fraud in the Punjab National Bank.

"The contention of Antiguan authorities that the only way the movement of Choksi could be restricted is through issue a Red Corner Notice is not legally sound as primary objective of locating the subject has already been addressed," the letter said.

The subsequent steps for a provisional arrest and an extradition will have to be taken by Antigua for which an RCN is not a "prerequisite", the officials said. Choksi has appealed to the Interpol to not issue an RCN against him as the charges are politically motivated, they said. He also said the conditions of jails in India are not good and staying their would violate his human rights, the officials said.

Choksi, the uncle of his alleged partner in crime Nirav Modi, also said the charges against him have been hyped by the media and he might not get a fair trial in India as courts may be influenced by news reports, they said.

In Mumbai, the fuel now costs Rs 73.74 a litre. Fuel prices in Delhi are the cheapest in all metros and most state capitals due to lower sales tax or VAT. Diesel price had previously hit its highest level on May 29 when it reached Rs 69.31 a litre mark in Delhi. Petrol in Delhi today costs Rs 77.91 per litre, and Rs 85.33 in Mumbai. The rates are however lower than the peak hit on May 29 when they touched Rs Rs 78.43 a litre in Delhi and Rs 86.24 in Mumbai. -- PTI

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, on Monday, urged 'Malayalis' all over the world to contribute their one month salary to rebuild the flood-hit state.

In a Facebook post, Vijayan said, "We can overcome any hurdle if Malayalis across the world stand united. Money will not be a hurdle for rebuilding Kerala. Let Malayalis across the world contribute their one month's salary for rebuilding the state. We should think about this."

"Everyone won't be able to give their one month's salary together. You can give it in ten month's time. The non-resident Malayalis should try to ensure the support of those who are with them," he added.Kerala has recently been hit by the worst floods in the century, which caused it a loss of Rs 19,512 crore to the state.

12:56   Major Gogoi guilty in Srinagar hotel case
Major Leetul Gogoi, who was detained by police in a Srinagar hotel after he was seen with a local woman in May, has been found guilty of fraternising with a local and being away from his place of duty while in an operational area by a Court of Inquiry, army sources said today. Orders have been issued to initiate disciplinary action against him, they said.

The court has held him accountable for "fraternising" with a local in spite of instructions to the contrary and "being away from the place of duty while in operational area", the sources said.

On May 23, police detained Gogoi following an altercation when he was allegedly trying to enter a Srinagar hotel with an 18-year-old woman. Days later, the Army ordered the CoI into the incident. Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat had said in Pahalgam that exemplary punishment would be given to Gogoi if he was found guilty of "any offence". PTI

12:45   Two get life term in Godhra train carnage
A special SIT court has held two out of five persons guilty and sentenced them to a life term in jail, for burning to death passengers on board the Sabarmati Express at Godhra in 2002.

They had been arrested during 2015-16 and were on the run for nearly a decade.

Different agencies arrested six persons, who were absconding at the time when the special court had first delivered its verdict against 94 accused in February 2011.

They were put on trial later. One of the six, Kadir Pataliya, died of cardiac arrest in January this year.

The five persons put on trial were Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi, Faruk Dhantiya, Faruk Bhana and Imran alias Sheru Bhatuk, all residents of Godhra.

Fifty passengers, mostly kar sevaks, returning from Ayodhya were killed in S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express on February 27, 2002, triggering state-wide communal riots that left at least 1,000 dead.

Investigations in the train carnage was carried out by local police before the Supreme Court transferred the probe to a special investigation team (SIT) in 2008.

However, it did not make any arrest but prosecuted 94 persons. Out of 94, then special SIT judge Jyotsna Yagnik convicted 31 persons and acquitted 63 others. Of those convicted, 11 were handed down death penalty while 20 got life imprisonment. In October last year, Gujarat high court reduced the death sentence to life imprisonment for 11 convicts. The HC also directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to kin of the victims.

12:28   Living in the company of the dead in a Kerala village
As flood waters rose to engulf their homes at Kainakary, a picturesque village in Alappuzha district, at least 20 families took refuge in a church cemetery and are living in the company of the dead with their domestic animals.

Thankachan and his family refused to accept help and go to a safer place leaving behind their cows and goats.

However, as the water rose to a dangerous level, the family took shelter in the St Mary's church cemetery at Kainakary village, a taluk in Kuttanad, with the animals. Kainakary is a sought-after spot by television serial makers due to its scenic beauty.

"We are not scared of living in the cemetery in the company of the dead. This is the final resting place of my father, elder sister and many other relatives who are buried here," Thankachan said.

"We had cows and goats and we did not want to leave them behind," he added. Presently, there are 20 other families who have taken shelter at the graveyard. They cook meals with whatever they are able to lay hands on, including fish. Water is a problem though and the stranded people have to depend on bottled water from Alappuzha.

11:49   Congress urges EC to bring back ballot papers for 2019 elections
In a fresh appeal to the Election Commission of India, the Congress Party has once again requested the poll body to bring back ballot papers for the 2019 general elections.

According to sources, the party made the appeal ahead of the all-party meeting, called by the EC later today.Earlier in March, the Congress had asked the EC to allow voters to exercise their franchise by stamping the ballot paper in the 2019 elections, alleging tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

On August 2, at least 17 political parties, including Telugu Desam Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal sang in tune with the Congress and expressed their distrust on the existing voting process.

However, the BJP brushed aside the tampering allegations, saying, it's an attempt by the opposition parties to cover up their own defeats in the recently concluded polls. -- ANI

11:38   Tourism comes to grinding halt in flood-hit Kerala
Even as Kerala begins the task of recouping after the devastating flood, the tourism industry has been hit hard.

The tourism industry in Kerala, which accounts for 12 per cent of the state's economy, has come to a grinding halt as the floods damaged roads, airports, rail lines, forcing tourists to cancel their trips.

Speaking to ANI, General Secretary of Homestay Owners Welfare Association, Kerala, Joseph Domnick said that the tourism sector is badly affected by the flash floods as it was not prepared for the situation that arose suddenly.

"The situation arose suddenly, and no one was prepared. We were shocked. This created chaos as the airport was shut and there were many tourists who were stranded. We made arrangements to transport the tourists to Trivandrum airport for them to fly back home," he said.

"International flights are cancelled. During Onam we have monsoon tourism and we expected good business, but suddenly hotels, restaurants, and home-stays are empty," he added.

As the situation subsided, locals and the government are trying to bring Kerala back to normalcy.

"We are hopeful; it'll recover soon with the upcoming Kochi-Muziris Biennale art exhibition. Our local MLA is trying to help us and has suggested making videos and spreading the word that the situation is getting better. We are hopeful," Domnick added. -- ANI

11:16   Kerala floods outcome of cow slaughtering: BJP MLA
Sparking controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, Basangouda Patil Yatnal has said that the devastating floods in Kerala are the result of ruthless cow slaughtering in the state.

The BJP lawmaker from Karnataka's Vijayapura further said that the people of Kerala suffered because of hurting the sentiments of Hindus.

"Slaughtering cows is against the feelings of the Hindu community. One should not hurt the feelings of other religions. Now you see what happened to Kerala, they openly slaughtered cows and you see in less than one year they've come to this stage," he said on Sunday.

"Whoever hurts Hindu community's feelings will be punished this way", Yatnal added.

Last month, the BJP MLA stirred a similar controversy when he said that had he been the Home Minister of Karnataka, he would have ordered the police to shoot the intellectuals in the state as they find them to be dangerous.

In June, right after the Karnataka elections, Yatnal urged his party workers to stop working for the Muslims as, according to him, they had not voted for the party.  -- ANI

10:13   Two buildings collapse in Ahmedabad, 4 rescued so far
Four people were rescued even as some were feared trapped after two building blocks constructed under a government housing scheme nearly two decades ago collapsed in Odhav locality in Ahmedabad today, officials said.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force and the local fire brigade were deployed to rescue people from the debris of the two blocks, each four-storeyed, said Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja.

He said these teams were using modern equipment for the rescue operation.

"The blocks were vacated yesterday by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials after it appeared that the building might collapse any time. But a few residents came back today and were inside the building when it collapsed," Jadeja said.

Jadeja said it was likely that 8-10 people were trapped under the debris but added that the exact number of those trapped was still not known.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rajesh Bhatt said four people had been rescued so far.

"Some residents had returned to the building today due to rains despite them AMC officials asking people to vacate their houses," said Ahmedabad Mayor Bijal Patel.

AMC Commissioner Vijay Nehra said two blocks of the building of the government colony, each having around 150 residents, collapsed completely.

"After noticing damage, we got the buildings vacated yesterday. Around 300 people had vacated, but some of the residents returned. Some of them are still trapped," Nehra said.

Gujarat Chief minister Vijay Rupani directed the district collector to take the services of the NDRF to evacuate the trapped people, a government official said.  -- PTI

09:32   Don't change the 'character' of NMML: Manmohan to Modi
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh has urged that the historic Teen Murti complex, dedicated to the memory of India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru, should be left undisturbed.

Dr Singh raised concerns over what he described as an 'agenda' to 'change the nature and character' of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) and the Teen Murti complex.

'Jawaharlal Nehru belongs not just to the Congress but to the entire nation. It is in that spirit that I have written to you,' Dr Singh's letter said.

Dr Singh's letter comes in the wake of reports that the Narendra Modi government wants to create a museum dedicated to all prime ministers in the Teen Murti complex.

The NMML was dedicated to the memory of India's first prime minister, who had left an indelible imprint both on India and the rest of the world, the Congress leader said.

'His distinctiveness and greatness have been acknowledged even by his political rivals.'

Dr Singh claimed that no effort was made to change the nature of the NMML and the Teen Murti complex during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as prime minister.

'But sadly it seems to be part of the agenda of the Government of India now,' Dr Singh wrote in his letter.   -- Agencies

09:00   Iran to begin argument against US sanctions at ICJ today
Iran will argue today against renewed sanctions imposed by the United States, as a bitter legal battle between Tehran and Washington opens before the International Court of Justice.

US President Donald Trump re-imposed a wave of tough unilateral sanctions on Iran three weeks ago, bringing back into effect harsh penalties that had been lifted under a landmark 2015 agreement.

A second round of measures is to come into effect in early November, targeting Iran's valuable oil and energy sector.

Tehran filed its case before the ICJ in late July, calling on the Hague-based tribunal's judges to order the immediate lifting of sanctions.

The US had no right to reinstate such measures, Tehran added, as it demanded compensation for damages.  -- Agencies

08:44   SC to hear plea seeking scrapping of Article 35A today
The Supreme Court will today hear a petition seeking the scrapping of Article 35 A in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, three weeks after the court was adjourned.

The Jammu and Kashmir government had moved an application and sought to defer the hearing of the case, citing upcoming panchayat and urban local body elections.

Article 370 of the Constitution grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, while Article 35A disallows people from residing in Jammu and Kashmir, buying or owning immovable property in the state, settle permanently, or get state government jobs.

A non-governmental organisation, We the Citizens, filed a petitioned in the Apex Court in 2014 to abolish the law on the grounds that it was 'unconstitutional'.

There are apprehensions, amongst sections of Kashmiris, that if the law is repealed or diluted, outsiders would settle in Jammu and Kashmir.  -- ANI
