23:46   Imran Khan vows to bring change in Pakistan
Pakistan Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan on Friday pledged to bring a change which according to him "the country was awaiting for last 70 decades".

"Today, I want to thank Allah who has given me this opportunity to bring change in Pakistan. The change that this nation has waited 70 years for!I promise my nation that the change we will bring, it is the change that this country was hoping and praying for," he said while addressing the Pakistan National Assembly.

Khan, after being elected as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan assured to identify the people accountable for "looting the country" and bring them to justice. He said that no kind of National Reconciliation Ordinance  will happen for any "dacoits".

Further attacking the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz for protesting against the conviction of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief said that no matter what, they will not get an NRO.

"Those who stole this nation's money and stashed it abroad, I will InshAllah bring them all to accountability," he added.

"We will together debate and think on how to generate our own revenues so that we never have to be dependent on another country," he said thanking the youth of Pakistan for supporting him.

He even took a dig at the political party for questioning the recently-concluded General election in Pakistan and said, "For all those making noise today on rigging, you are the same people who did not open up only four constituencies we asked for post-2013. And when they went to courts, they all had discrepancies."

"Why were they not investigated? Why was there no accountability of people who were responsible for massive faults in the election? If it had been done, the electoral system would have been fixed today," he added.

He even assured to bring an electoral policy where everyone will be satisfied and challenged the people, making rigging allegation to go to the courts and the election commission. "We had over 400 petitions in court. It took 2.5 years for them to be opened. We led the movement to the streets. Meanwhile those complaining have no details about where they want to claim rigging from," Khan said.

Recounting his journey of 22-year from a cricketer to a politician, Khan asserted that no "military dictator nurtured" him and he has reached this height with his own "struggle and accord." -- ANI

The highest ever growth rate since Independence was recorded at 10.2 per cent in 1988-89 when Rajiv Gandhi was prime minister.
The back series data on GDP has been prepared by the Committee on Real Sector Statistics, constituted by the National Statistical Commission. The report has been released on the website of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
The report compares growth rates between old series (2004-05) and new series based on 2011-12 prices.

As per the old series (2004-05), the expansion in the Gross Domestic Product at constant prices was 9.57 per cent during 2006-07, when Manmohan Singh was prime minister. As per the new series (2011-12), the growth number stands revised at 10.08 per cent.

"The UPA also delivered the ONLY instance of double digit annual growth in modern Indian history," it said.

20:59   Feel 'orphaned' by demise of Vajpayee: Shatrughan Sinha
BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha today said that he felt like an "orphan" after hearing the death news of former prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, under whose guardianship he had learnt the "art of good politics".
The BJP MP from Patna Sahib described Vajpayee as a "father-figure".
Sinha had served in the cabinet of Vajpayee during the NDA government rule between 1999 and 2004.
"As this most revered & respected institution leaves us, a real Father figure has gone. I feel orphaned in the true sense...We shall always remember you & miss your guidance on the correct path of life. I humbly offer my prayers & heartfelt condolences to the family & loved ones," he said in a tweet.
Talking to PTI over phone from Mumbai, Sinha today shared his fond memories with the visionary leader.
"Nanaji Deshmukh had sent me to Vajpayee ji and Advani ji for training in politics. Both of them showered their love and blessings on me all my life," the actor-politician said.

Sinha, who joined Vajpayee on the historic bus journey to Lahore in 1999, said he had traits of a great leader.
"He was a 'yug purush' in the true sense of the term," he added.
The BJP leader also remembered sharing dais with the former prime minister at an election rally at Lucknow in 2004 - the last election Vajpayee had fought.
"Atal ji had called me specially to campaign for him at Lucknow on the last day. It was a tense moment when he handed over the microphone to me. At the end of the rally, he patted my back. Getting appreciation from a man, who himself was an extraordinary orator, was a touching gesture," he said.
His passing away has created a void not just in the BJP but the entire political spectrum, Sinha added. -- PTI

Wearing a blue suit and a pink turban, Sidhu arrived Lahore via the Wagah border from where he will travel to Islamabad to attend Khan's oath-taking ceremony scheduled for tomorrow.
Sidhu used his usual poetic expression while interacting with reporters.

He said he has brought "a message of love" to Pakistan as a goodwill ambassador of India.

"I have come here not as a politician but as a friend. I have come here to take part in the happiness of my friend (Imran)," he said, adding sportsmen and artistes help bringing the people of two sides closer.
"Hindustan jeevay, Pakistan jeevay," he chanted while reading a verse.
Sidhu said former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away yesterday, also talked about peace between the two countries.

Quoting late Vajpayee, he said, "If there is a fire at a neighbour's house we get the heat of it."
Talking about the qualities of Khan, the former cricketer said: "I have seen Khan converting his weaknesses into his strength. I wish Imran becomes a symbol of prosperity (for his country)."

Replying to a query on the gift he has brought for the former Pakistan Test captain, Sidhu said: "I have brought a Kashmiri shawl for Khan sahib."

I was sitting at a little distance from Vajpayeeji, who was on a high table with Vietanamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

"We were served a huge lobster. While I struggled to eat that, I saw Vajpayeeji happily enjoying his meal, and the lobster. He tried everything on the table and continued eating till the last, even though his host Vietnamese PM had finished eating much before him.

"It was generally believed that way to Vajpayeeji's heart was through his stomach. So, whenever any of the Indian ambassadors wanted to get into his good books, they would fly best chefs to cook for him. It happened in Malaysia in 2001, I remember."

09:13   Pak troops violate ceasefire along LoC in Poonch
The Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire on Thursday by firing on the forward posts along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, drawing retaliation from the Indian Army.

The Pakistani troops resorted to moderate firing on the forward posts along the LoC in the Poonch sector, defence sources said.

The Indian troops guarding the border retaliated and the exchanges were on, they added.

Commander of the Army's Northern Command Lt Gen. Ranbir Singh visited the forward areas along the LoC, met the field commander and reviewed the security situation and operational preparedness of the Indian troops.

The Pakistani troops had violated the ceasefire in the Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district last night, officials said.

The ceasefire violation had taken place in the Saedapora area, along the LoC, as the Pakistani troops opened fire at the Indian posts, they added.

The Indian Army retaliated in adequate measure, triggering an intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides, the officials said.

The firing stopped at 5 am today, they said, adding that there was no report of any casualty on either side.  -- PTI

00:34   A thaw that didn't last: When Vajpayee took bus to Lahore
It was a short-lived thaw in stormy relations between India and Pakistan when Atal Bihari Vajpayee took a bus to Lahore in 1999 and hugged his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif leaving an endearing image that symbolised hope in bilateral ties.

Vajpayee, who died on Thursday at the age of 93 after a prolonged illness, had made a significant diplomatic breakthrough and travelled on a bus from Amritsar to Lahore with a delegation that included the likes of Bollywood legend Dev Anand, writer Javed Akhtar and cricket icon Kapil Dev.

The move was hailed as the dawn of a new era in Indo-Pak relations.

"I bring the goodwill and hope of my fellow Indians who seek abiding peace and harmony with Pakistan... I am conscious that this is a defining moment in South Asian history and I hope we will be able to rise to the challenge," Vajpayee had said upon arrival at Lahore to a rousing welcome.

After talks between the two prime ministers, the Lahore Declaration was signed, under which, among other things, it was agreed upon that the two sides were fully committed to undertaking measures to reduce risks of accidental or unauthorised use of nuclear weapons.

However, the bonhomie between India and Pakistan did not last long as just months after the visit, the Pakistan Army undertook a covert operation to send its troops into Kargil in Jammu & Kashmir that led to a limited conflict that Pakistan lost.

"He (Vajpayee) gave a speech in Lahore, (it) was very touching because he said that as far as he was concerned, he will not allow a conflict to happen. And that speech carried a huge impact, it was played on Pakistan television," Gopalaswami Parthasarathy, who was India's High Commissioner to Pakistan when Vajpayee visited Lahore, told PTI.

Former foreign secretary Salman Haidar said Vajpayee's contribution to Indo-Pak ties was something that speaks for itself as "he took a great deal of initiative in bringing the two countries into closer proximity with each other".
