The railways today floated a tender for an additional foot-over-bridge at Elphinston station in Mumbai where 22 people were killed during a stampede on the existing decades-old bridge, senior officials said.
The 40 feet wide FOB was announced in the 2016 railway budget and was part of the Rs 45-crore budget earmarked towards escalators, foot-over-bridges and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines for Mumbai suburban section.
The FOB, to cost approximately Rs 9.5 crore, is expected to be open for commuters by early next year, the officials told PTI.
According to sources in the western railway, the plan to install escalators at 12 locations in six stations and to construct foot bridges at Bhayander, Elphinstone Road, Kandivli, Khar and Virar stations are already underway.
At least 22 persons were killed and over 30 injured in a rush hour stampede on the narrow foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations during heavy rains this morning.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 am during the peak rush hour on the foot-over-bridge connecting Parel railway station, that falls in the central line, with the Elphinstone railway station, which is on the western railway line.
