Trinamool Congress party senior leader Mukul Roy has announced that he has resigned from the party. He also resigned from the working committee of the party.

In a short press conference held now, Roy announced with a "heavy heart" that he has been "forced to quit the party".

This comes in the back of Roy's meetings with senior BJP leaders in Delhi last week. The Bengal BJP on Saturday hailed Roy as a leader of "great stature" and said he was in contact with several central BJP veterans.

Roy said he will quit as a member of the Rajya Sabha after Durga puja. TMC was set to suspend Roy after he fell out of favour with TMC chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

In the year 2015, Roy was removed from the post of all India general secretary of the Trinamool Congress for his alleged role in the Saradha chit fund scam.
