23:56   US will 'suffer' if sanctions imposed: N Korea
North Korea has warned that United States will pay a 'due price', if harsh sanctions against Kim Jong-un and the country are agreed at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, where members will vote on a draft resolution for imposing new sanctions, including freezing the assets of leader Kim Jong-un over its sixth and powerful nuclear test.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on state media that if the US 'does rig up the illegal and unlawful resolution', it would respond in kind.

'The DPRK is ready and willing to use any form of ultimate means,' the statement said, referring to the country by its acronym.

'The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the US the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history.

'The draft resolution includes a full ban on exports of oil to North Korea, a full ban on textile imports from North Korea, a ban on North Korean labourers generating earnings overseas, and the asset freeze, which will also target members of the ruling worker's party, the diplomat said, calling it a 'hard-hitting, ambitious resolution',' CNN reported.

North Korean ally China and neighboring Russia hold veto power on the Security Council.

A draft resolution needs nine affirmative votes from members of the Council and zero vetoes from permanent members in order to pass.

The International community condemned North Korea for testing the hydrogen bomb on August 27, marking the sixth time the isolated state has tested a nuclear weapon.

The major powers than convened an emergency session of the security council where US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley argued forcefully for harsher sanctions, saying, "enough is enough," and that Kim was 'begging for war'. -- ANI

23:08   SIT finds attempts to destroy evidence in Gurugram child murder case
The Gurugram police, which today arrested two top functionaries of Ryan International School in connection with the brutal murder of a 7-year-old child in the school premises, said that there was an attempt to destroy evidence in the case.

The police arrested Francis Thomas, legal head and Jeyus Thomas, HR Head of the  Ryan International School group, who were produced in a Sohna court which remanded them to two days in police custody.

Gurugram Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case believes that evidence in the case was tampered with.

"The SIT said in the Sohna court that destruction of evidence was found to have been done. Attempt was made to wash away the blood stains from the spot where the child was found murdered. The blood on his water bottle and bag was also found rubbed. Some other pieces of evidence were also tampered with," Khirwar said.

We will add appropriate sections against the school management or other staff, whoever is found to be involved, at the time of submission of the chargesheet, Khirwar said.

"A team was sent to Mumbai to the Ryan headquarters for questioning the top officials including the head and directors so that we can look at their roles and responsibility regarding the school in Gurgaon," he said.

Asked about the post-mortem findings, he said that these details could not shared at the moment.

"Some other security lapses also emerged. We have already taken action under the Juvenile Justice Act against the school and arrested their two top officers and are interrogating other staff members including suspended Principal Neerja Batra," Khirwar added.

More arrests will be carried out as per the evidence that emerges, he said.

The police teams will again question the bus driver and school gardener, he added.

Haryana Police Additional Directorate General of Police Law and Order, Mohammad Akil has also visited the scene of the crime.

We will not spare any person found involved, irrespective of his or her position, he said.

"We will add Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other sections on the basis of SIT report. As per our investigation and evidence before us, we have found Ashok Kumar, the school bus conductor is guilty in this murder," Akil said.

The police also added Section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code in the murder case against the two officers of school, officials said.

The prosecution counsels demanded the addition of Section 201 of the IPC (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).

The police told the court that the school authorities tampered with the evidence at the crime spot.

Meanwhile, there were also allegations that the school management had not carried out a proper verification of the conductor and his Aadhaar card was obtained from his house in Ghamroj village hours after the crime to maintain records.

Amir Chand, the father of accused alleged that his son was a soft target and hence the school was framing him.

"Why did the school take his Aadhaar card six hours after the crime?" Chand asked.  -- PTI

22:44   Protesting TN farmers threaten to commit suicide
The Tamil Nadu farmers, who have resorted to increasingly desperate modes of protest here for loan waiver and other demands, now say they plan to march nude and even attempt suicide.

Today, they marched near Jantar Mantar clad in just loin cloths, demanding a Rs 40,000 crore drought relief package, insurance for their crops and the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.

The Parliament Street Police detained around 25 farmers.

Farmers leader P Ayyakkannu said, "They detained us without citing any reasons. No one has the right to stop people from protesting."

"Tomorrow we will take out a nude procession. If our demands are not met, we will even commit suicide by slitting our throats," he threatened.

A senior official from the Parliament Street Police Station said the farmers were detained after they started stripping on the protest street in Jantar Mantar where women were also demonstrating.

Yesterday, the farmers, who have been protesting for nearly two months in their second round of agitations in the national capital, consumed human excreta to draw attention towards their issues.

In their first round of protests earlier this year, they had shaved their heads and half their moustaches, held mice and snakes in their mouths, conducted mock funerals, flogged themselves and even carried skulls of other farmers who had committed suicide due to debt pressure.  -- PTI

22:11   Sitharaman to meet service chiefs daily for 'quick decision making'
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold meetings with the three service chiefs every morning to ensure quick decision making in areas of strategic importance.

It had also been decided that the Defence Acquisition Council, the highest decision making body on defence procurements, would meet on a fortnightly basis to ensure a time-bound clearance of proposals on military acquisition, the defence ministry said.

Sitharaman would also have a separate meeting with the defence secretary every day, it added.

'A whole range of meetings has been scheduled with the three defence service chiefs to review defence preparedness and allied issues of strategic interests.

'Daily morning meetings with the three service chiefs and a separate daily meeting with the defence secretary have been formatted as a new practice for quick decision making,' the ministry said in a statement.

Sitharaman, during meetings with senior officials of the ministry today, gave clear directions on critical issues while emphasising the need to step up the pace of acquisition proposals.

Other areas of focus would be settling all outstanding land-related issues for infrastructure projects and matters relating to the welfare of defence personnel and their families, the ministry said.

Sitharaman has been holding a series of meetings with top officials of the various wings of the defence ministry since taking charge as defence minister on September 7.

She has listed military preparedness, defence indigenisation, resolving long-pending issues and welfare of soldiers as the priority areas.  -- PTI

21:08   I-T dept orders attachment of properties linked to Lalu's family
The Income Tax Department has issued a final attachment order against some assets in connection with its benami deal probe against Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family.

Officials privy to the probe said the order was issued against a firm allegedly involved in the case -- AB Exports Private Limited -- and also alleged that Lalu's relatives were the 'beneficiaries' of the immovable properties of this firm.

A property in south Delhi's New Friends Colony is owned by this firm, they said.

A provisional order for attachment--under the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 2016-- was issued by the department in June this year and now the order has been confirmed after adjudication, they said.

The cases of other assets which were provisionally attached in June will also be processed similarly, they added.

The department had earlier served notices of attachment of assets to Lalu, Bihar's ex-chief minister, his wife Rabri Devi, also a former CM, son Tejashwi Yadav, former state deputy CM, daughters Chanda, Ragini Yadav and Misa Bharti, an MP, and son-in-law Shailesh Kumar.

The tax department had attached about a dozen plots and buildings in Delhi and Bihar including a farmhouse and land in the Palam Vihar area, a building in the upmarket New Friends Colony area of south Delhi, nine plots on a 256.75 decimal land area in Patna's Phulwari Sharif area, where a shopping mall was being constructed, among a few others in the same area in Bihar's capital.

The department has said these alleged benami assets bear a 'deed' value of about Rs 9.32 crore but the taxman has estimated their current market value at Rs 170-180 crore.

Benami properties are those in which the real beneficiary is not the one in whose name (benamidar) the property has been purchased.

The Yadav family has said the cases are the outcome of a 'political vendetta' against them.

The Act allows for the prosecution of the beneficial owner, the benamidar, the abettor and the inducer to benami transactions.

Under the provisions of the Act, assets held benami after the final prosecution are liable for confiscation by the government without payment of compensation.  -- PTI

20:16   Have more women employees for greater safety: Javadekar to schools
A greater presence of women -- employees and bus drivers -- in schools can help address the issue of safety on campus, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said today, days after a seven-year-old Gurugram student was killed in school washroom.

Schools and parents need to work together to find a solution to the issue of students' safety, the minister said.

"There should be more and more women employees in schools and school buses can also have women drivers so that there is more safety for students," Javadekar told reporters in New Delhi.

The human resource development minister said he would talk to parents and school authorities after the initial probe into the killing of the boy was over.

"The culprits will be booked and charge-sheeted and we will address this issue," he added.

The killing of the Class 2 student sparked outrage among parents and others on the issue of safety of children in schools.

The boy was found dead, with his throat slit, in the school's washroom last week.

The police alleged he had been killed by a school bus conductor.

The minister said the murder and the recent rape of a five-year-old girl, allegedly by a peon in her school premises, were 'heinous crimes'. -- PTI

18:43   Bihar flood fury: Nitish seeks Rs 7,636 cr assistance from Centre
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said a memorandum has been sent to the Centre seeking an assistance of Rs 7,636 crore on account of floods in 19 districts of the state that claimed 514 lives and left behind a trail of destruction.
According to official sources, the Centre, without any delay, has informed the state government about the visit of an  inter-ministerial team for on-the-spot assessment of thesituation.
The team, for assessment of damage caused by the floods, would be headed by Mukesh Mittal, the joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
It would have representatives from the ministries of agriculture and farmers welfare, finance, rural development, drinking water and sanitation, road transport and highways and water resources.
Speaking to reporters after the weekly 'Lok Samvad' (public interaction) programme in Patna, Kumar said, "A memorandum of Rs 7,636 crore prepared with pragmatic approach has been send to the Centre for assistance to carry rehabilitation and restoration work in 19 districts that faced inundation."
"The memorandum, incorporating details of damage to crops, houses, damaged roads and other items, has been prepared in a pragmatic manner and not like a thick piece of document consisting of impractical details," he said.
Kumar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi after aerial survey of flood-hit districts of Purnea, Kisanganj, Araria and Katihar on August 26 had announced immediate assistance of Rs 500 crore and promised that the Centre would provide more funds after getting reports of damage caused.
He took potshots at leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and other Congress leaders for mocking the prime minister's announcement of Rs 500 crore earlier, which they had said was half the amount that the UPA government had provided to the state after the floods in 2008.

18:34   Ryan International School's CEO, founders move HC for anticipatory bail
Ryan International Group's chief executive officer Ryan Pinto and his parents, who are its founders, today approached the Bombay high court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the murder of a 7-year-old boy on the institution's campus in Gurugram.
The bail pleas were filed following the arrest of two top officials of the Ryan International School in Gurugram.
Ryan International Group's founding chairman, Augustine Pinto, 73, and his wife Grace Pinto, 62, who is the managing director of the institution, have along with their son Ryan Pinto sought anticipatory bail in the Bombay
high court, their counsel Niteen Pradhan told PTI.
Pradhan mentioned the applications this morning before Justice Ajey Gadkari, who posted them for hearing tomorrow.
The Pintos, in their pleas, said while the death of the boy was unfortunate, the management cannot be held culpable and that they themselves were victims of the unfortunate circumstances.
"The death has caused deep pain and grief not only to the parents and family of the child but also to the trustees, management, staff and students of the school," the applications said.
"This is not only the darkest hour for the family but also for the institution. Such an incident has taken place for the first time in the past four decades since the institution was set up," the three said in their bail pleas.
Despite taking all necessary steps for security and well being of the students as required by law and prudence, if such an unfortunate incident occurs, the institution cannot be held culpable as it is itself a victim of unfortunate
circumstances," they said.

Two top officials of the Ryan International School were arrested while the acting principal detained for questioning in connection with the gruesome murder of the boy in the school premises, police said today.
Pradhuman Thakur, a class 2 student, was found with his throat slit in a school washroom on Friday last.
A bus conductor has also been arrested for the killing which has triggered a huge public outrage.

18:04   China plans to ban petrol, diesel cars
China, the world's top automobile market, is planning to ban petrol and diesel cars and boost electric vehicles in a bid to contain air pollution and restrict traffic congestion.
Attending an automobile forum over the weekend, Xin Guobin, China's vice minister of industry and information technology said that Beijing has started research on a timetable to phase out production and sales of fossil fuel
cars.
Though Xin gave no details on the timeframe, he said, "The measures would surely bring profound changes to the sector's development."
The plan would follow decisions by France and Britain which have announced plans to ban the manufacturing and sales of cars running on traditional fuels.
Several Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, have already imposed severe restrictions on sale of new cars to contain air pollution and to restrict traffic congestion.
The minister's statement followed similar moves of several countries to end the era of gas-powered vehicles to cut emissions and reduce pollution, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.
In July, French Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot had announced that France would end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as part of the country's plan to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord.
The same month, the British government followed suit with a similar plan eyeing 2040 as a deadline to stop sales of new fossil fuel cars.
Analysts say that while there is little doubt that new energy vehicles (NEVs) will eventually prevail, how long the switch takes remains to be seen and depends a lot on infrastructure and technology improvements as well as how fast automakers can adapt.
China manufactured and sold over 28 million vehicles in 2016, according to the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers.

16:39   Nadella's book, 'Hit Refresh', releases on Sep 26
Last month Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, turned 50.

And this month will see the release of his first book, Hit Refresh: The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft's Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone, that is published under the imprint Harper Business.

Incidentally, HarperCollins India celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

The book, releasing on September 26, has a foreword by Bill Gates wherein he says, 'With every new technology, there are challenges. How do we help people whose jobs are replaced by AI agents and robots? Will users trust their AI agent with all their information? If an agent could advise you on your work style, would you want it to? That is what makes books like Hit Refresh so valuable.'

A release from HarperCollins describes the book as the Microsoft CEO telling 'the inside story of the company's continuing transformation, tracing his own personal journey from a childhood in India to leading some of the most significant technological changes in the digital era and offering his vision for the coming wave of intelligent technologies.'

'Ideas excite me, says Nadella, 'Empathy grounds and centres me.' And at its core, his book is about humans and how one of our essential qualities -- empathy -- will become ever more valuable in a world where technological advancement will alter the status quo as never before.

A series of recommendations presented as algorithms, the release says, Hit Refresh is an astute contemplation of what lies ahead from a conscientious, deliberative leader searching for improvement -- for himself, for a storied company, and for society.

Needless to add, we can't wait to get our hands on it.

16:15   Deplore current measures in India to deport Rohingyas: UN
The top UN human rights official on Monday denounced Myanmar's "brutal security operation" against Muslim Rohingyas in Rakhine state, saying it was disproportionate to insurgent attacks carried out last month.

Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, addressing the United Nations Human Rights Council, said that more than 270,000 people had fled to Bangladesh, with more trapped on the border, amid reports of the burning of villages and extrajudicial killings.

Rohingyas have been stripped of civil and political rights, including citizenship rights for decades, he added.

"I call on the government to end its current cruel military operation, with accountability for all violations that have occurred, and to reverse the pattern of severe and widespread discrimination against the Rohingya population", Zeid said.

"The situation seems a textbook example of ethnic cleansing."
Last year, Zeid's office issued a report, based on interviews with Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh after a previous military assault, which he said on Monday had "suggested a widespread or systematic attack against the community, possibly amounting to crimes against humanity".

"I deplore the current measures in India to deport Rohingyas at a time of such violence against them in their country", Zeid said, noting that some 40,000 Rohingyas had settled in India, including 16,000 who had received refugee documentation.

Noting India's obligations under the international law, he said, "India cannot carry out collective expulsions, or return people to a place where they risk torture or other serious violations.

15:26   Rohingya Muslims posing threat to Myanmar's integrity: Sena
The Shiv Sena today alleged the Rohingya Muslim community posed a "threat to the integrity and security" of Myanmar, prompting "strong action" by the country's government.

It praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not entertaining calls by "bogus secularists" to give shelter to Rohingya refugees.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' today also lashed out at sections of the Muslim community in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, for hitting the streets last Friday to protest atrocities on Rohingya Muslims.

"Do the people who came out on streets even know where Myanmar is or what is happening in that country? Do they know anything about Rohingya issue?" it asked.

"The issue of Rohingya Muslims is Myanmar's internal matter. Strong action is being taken against them as they have posed a threat to integrity and security," it alleged.

"Rohingya Muslims follow the fatwas issued by Pakistan's Azhar Masood (leader of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad) and sow the seeds of division by creating religious strife," the editorial alleged.

"Some bogus secularists tried to secure shelter for Rohingya refugees in India... But Prime Minister Narendra Modi was unfazed. For this, we congratulate him specially," it added.

14:55   Illegal abortions at Dera's hospital? Haryana govt begins probe
The Haryana government has opened an investigation to ascertain if illegal abortions were carried out at the Dera Sacha Sauda hospital in Sirsa, officials said on Monday, a day after search operations ended at the sect's 600-acre campus.

Shah Satnam Ji Super Speciality Hospital's records for 2015 had some discrepancies that made them suspicious, a doctor with the Sirsa civil hospital who was part of the search team was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times.

"The medical termination of pregnancy act was not being followed properly in the hospital and irregularities have been detected," deputy commissioner Prabhjot Singh said.

The dera faced the scrutiny after its flamboyant leader, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was on August 25 found guilty of raping two disciples and sent to jail for 20 years.

The Punjab and Haryana high court ordered the sanitisation of the dera headquarters, which is a township in its own right equipped with educational institutes, a cinema hall, a stadium, a "seven-star" hotel, shopping complexes and several residential buildings, including luxury bungalows. The hospital, too, is part of the sprawling campus.

"The India-Japan relationship is at its best ever. India is a key partner to carry out Prime Minister Abe's free and open Indo-Pacific strategy. The long-awaited general council meeting as well of the executive committee of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will be held at Sri Varu Venkatachalapathy Palace Mahal in Vanagaram, near Chennai, on Tuesday.

This will be the decision-making body's first meeting since Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's death last year.

The meeting, involving 3425 primary members of the party, will be presided over by the party presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan.

Under the party constitution, only the GC can appoint the party general secretary, and it is a foregone conclusion that it will expel Sasikala from the party.

As a mark of respect to Jayalalithaa, Palaniswami has ordered that only vegetarian lunch will be served to GC members.

When the two factions, headed by O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami had met at the party headquarters in August, convening the GC meeting was among the four resolutions that had been adopted.

But the general council meeting couldn't be convened as a suit was filed against it in the Madras high court. With the court dismissing the case, Palaniswami wasted no time in convening the long-awaited meeting.

13:39   Quote was strictly not mine: Sitharaman clarifies remarks on CAG report
The new Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has clarified remarks regarding the CAG report that highlights the shortage of ammunition in the Indian Army.

The defence minister said, "The question asked to me had no reference to the CAG. My reply was procurement is a continuing process, gaps will be filled. In none of my answers did I mention CAG. Putting 2 & 2 together, a quote has been created, which was strictly not mine."

Earlier on Sunday, a PTI report stated that Sitharaman had dismissed as factually wrong a CAG's report which had stated that the defence forces had ammunition that could last for 20 days in the event of a war, and asserted there was no dearth of weapons with the defence forces.

She was quoted by PTI as saying, "Facts were wrong and it was unnecessary to debate on the issue, she told reporters. "After taking the charge of defence ministry, I have discussed the issue with senior officers and experts. Purchasing weapons is a continuous process, she said.

12:01   Only people who clean India can say Vande Mataram: PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing a students convention to mark the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekanandas Chicago address and Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya centenary celebrations.

The theme of the convention is Young India, New India.

>> Today is 9/11...this day became widely spoken about after 2001 but there was another 9/11 of 1893 which we remember. 125 years ago, there was a 9/11, when a young man from the country, wearing gerua-vastra, which the world wasnt acquainted with

>> Just with a few words, a youngster from India won over the world and showed the world the power of oneness. The 9/11 of 1893 was about love, harmony and brotherhood

>> Swami Vivekananda raised his voice against the social evils that has entered our society

>> Swami Vivekananda did not believe in sermonising. Swami Vivekananda converted ideas to idealism and made an institutional framework... He gave birth to Ramkrishna Mission Ashram, not Vivekananda Mission Ashram

>> Do we have the right to say Vande Mataram? We eat paan and spit it out and then say Vande Mataram, we litter and say Vande Mataram? If anyone has the right to say Vande Mataram in the country, it is the people who clean the country

>> I want to specially mention all those people who are working tirelessly to keep India clean... We clean the country or not, we dont have the right to litter

10:21   Indian-Americans open homes as Hurricane Irma makes landfall
Indian-Americans in Atlanta and neighbouring areas today opened up their homes for friends, families and community members from Florida, as catastrophic hurricane Irma made landfall on the state's southern islands.

Sewa International, one of the Indian-American organisations carrying out relief and rescue work, provided shelter to more than 300 families in the homes of its volunteers and members in and around Atlanta.

With other Indian-American community organisations and religious groups, a collective count took the figure to a minimum of 2,000 families.

The popular Amma Kitchen announced to serve free food to those coming from Florida like several other Hindu temples.

Indian-Americans who own hotels have opened up their unreserved rooms and in many cases their banquet halls have been converted into makeshift dormitories for those who left their homes in Florida to escape from the wrath of the hurricane.

10:09   North Korea warns of harsh response if new sanctions imposed
North Korea says it will make the United States pay a heavy price if a proposal Washington is backing to impose the toughest sanctions ever on Pyongyang is approved by the UN Security Council this week.

The North's foreign ministry issued a statement early today saying it is watching the United States' moves closely and threatened it is "ready and willing" to respond with measures of its own.

The United States has called for a vote today on new UN sanctions against North Korea.

Previous UN sanctions resolutions have been negotiated between the United States and China, and have taken weeks or months. But the Trump administration is demanding a vote in six days.

North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test a week ago and has been launching ballistic missiles at a record pace. Both are violations of UN resolutions, but Pyongyang claims it must carry them out to build nuclear deterrent against what it sees as US aggression.

09:52   iPhone X to be Apple's new phone
Apples most important new phone for years will be called the iPhone X, according to a leak of the companys latest mobile operating system.

Strings of software code inside of the leaked operating system, first detailed by Apple news website 9to5Mac, show the expected three new phones will be called the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are successors to the current iPhone models, while the iPhone X is the premium version with an all-new design, crisper OLED screen, improved cameras, and a 3-D facial recognition scanner for unlocking the device.

The X in the iPhones name may be a reference to this model being a special 10th anniversary edition. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will look similar to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but include faster processors, Bloomberg News has reported.

09:31   PM offered Supriya Sule Cabinet berth, claims Saamna
The Shiv Sena stirred a hornet's nest with its mouthpiece Saamna claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had offered NCP chief Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, an MP, a berth in the Union Cabinet.

In a signed article in Saamna on Sunday, Shiv Sena strategist Sanjay Raut referred to his recent meeting with Pawar.

When the Sena MP sought to know if the NCP was set to join the BJP-led NDA, Pawar blamed the media for spreading canards about his party.
Pawar, according to Raut, then recalled his meeting with Modi. "The PM told me that he wanted Supriya in the Union Cabinet," Raut quoted the Maratha strongman as saying.

According to Raut, Pawar added that Supriya -- who was also present at the meeting with the PM -- told Modi that she would be the last person to go with the BJP.

Raut maintained that whatever Pawar might say, the state leaders of the NCP are in contact with the BJP. Pawar and Sule had no comments to offer on the Saamna piece.

08:41   After protests, all 4 Ryan schools in Gurugram shut for 2 days
All four campuses of Ryan International School in Gurugram will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday under the orders of the government amid raging protests against the management over the murder of Class 2 student Pradhyumn Thakur in the Bhondsi campus last Friday.

The decision was taken with safety in mind, after "requests from parents", said Gurgaon's deputy commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, but the uncertainty around the future of the school, especially the Bhondsi campus, drove up anxiety as well.

Ryan has two other campuses in Sector 41 and another in Sector 31. Collectively, around 4,500 students study on the four campuses. The Bhondsi campus has a little over 1,000 students, many of whose parents don't want to send their children back to the campus anymore.

On Sunday, hundreds of angry parents on Sunday staged a protest outside the Ryan International School in Gurugram for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.

A liquor shop, situated just 50 metres from the school, was set ablaze and some of the demonstrators threw liquor bottles inside school premises to vent their ire against the school management, police said.

The protesters alleged that school drivers and conductors often consumed alcohol from the liquor shop in their free time.

08:01   Florida battered: Irma leaves 5 million without power
Hurricane Irma lashed the Florida mainland, where anxious residents dreaded being "punched in the face" by the monster storm after it whipped the Keys island chain with fearsome wind gusts.

One of the mightiest hurricanes ever to slam storm-prone Florida, Irma is threatening dangerous storm surges of up to 15 feet (4.5 metres), enough to cover a house, as it collides with the state after sowing devastation through the Caribbean.

At least 30 deaths are attributable to the storm, including three in Florida. The US victims included a sheriff's deputy killed in a head-on collision early yesterday as she drove home to get supplies after working in a shelter all night.

Before reaching the United States, Irma smashed through a string of Caribbean islands from tiny Barbuda on Wednesday, to the tropical paradises of Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Turks and Caicos.
