A day after Nobel laureate and Myanmar's state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi made her first public comments on the fate of the persecuted Rohingyas, she spoke to news agency ANI saying it is the biggest challenge the country has to face.

"It is a little unreasonable to expect us to solve the issue in 18 months. As the situation in Rakhine has been such since many decades and it goes back to pre-colonial times. We have to decide how to differentiate between terrorists and innocents.

"You in India would be well-versed with this. Our duty is to take care of our citizens and we will try our best. Our resources are not as complete and adequate as we would like them to be," she said.

She said the Rohingya issue was the biggest challenge Myanmar has had to face.

Suu Kyi has come under fire for failing to speak out against the mass killings and displacement of thousands of Rohingyas by her government, particularly given her image as a champion of human rights.
