881 satellite TV channels operating in India: Govt

As many as 881 private satellite TV channels have been allowed to operate in India, with the government granting permission to 10 new channels since last month.
Out of these 881 channels, 387 are for 'news and current affairs' while 494 channels fall under 'non-news and current affairs' category as on September 5, according to data on the official website of the ministry of  information and broadcasting.
The ministry has so far cancelled permission of 216 channels.
Of the 10 channels granted permission since last month, two are news channels, while the rest are non-news channels.
Under news category, the ministry granted permission to 'Malai Murasu Seithikal' a Tamil language channel owned by Chennai Murasu Pvt Ltd and Anaadi TV, a multi-language channel owned by Asnani Builders and Developers Ltd.
Under non-news category, seven channels owned by 'Cinema 24x7 Pvt Ltd' and 'Bangla Talkies' channel of 'Media Worldwide Ltd' got the ministry's nod.
