Updates: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeks a report on the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh. The HM has asked the Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba to speak to the Karnataka Government and seek a report on the murder.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah held a press conference earlier today saying that the probe into the murder would be carried out by a Special Investigation Team led by the Inspector General of Police (IG), Karnataka. He ruled out a CBI inquiry, but said he was keeping options open.

At the presser, the CM said Gauri Lankesh had met hims recently but never spoke about any threats. He said he left the probe to the DGP who will speak to the Home Minister and decide on it. He said he had instructed the police that activists propagating progressive thoughts should be given police protection. He said similar weapons were used in the Kalburgi, Pansare and  Dabholkar killings, but in this case it was too early to draw a link.

He said he had given instructions that the case must be taken seriously and be investigated by a special team headed by a senior police officer.

Reports say that cops have recovered the password to the CCTV cameras at Gauri Lankesh's residence. The CCTV footage is password protected.
