Even as BJP leaders have been vocal in opposing the Karnataka government's celebration of Tipu Jayanti on November 10, with Union minister Anantkumar Hegde writing to the state government asking it not to include his name in the invitation list for his district as per protocol, President Ram Nath Kovind in his address to the state legislature on Wednesday said the 18th century ruler of Mysuru died a heroic death fighting the British.

Addressing members of the Karnataka legislature on the 60th anniversary of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru today,  President Kovind described Tipu Sultan as a pioneer in the development and use of Mysore rockets in warfare, a technology which was later adopted by the Europeans.
