The Supreme Court has refused to modify its order suspending licence for sale of firecrackers in Delhi and NCR ahead of Diwali.

The apex court also said it was "pained and sad" that a communal colour had been given to its order.

It also clarified that those who had already bought firecrackers can still burst them.

The order has divided opinion on social media, with some objecting to the ban on celebrations with fireworks during a "Hindu festival".

In November last year, the court had stopped the sale of fireworks within the National Capital Region, which includes Delhi and nearby areas, following the alarming rise in pollution levels after Diwali.
