After 30 years of service in Army, a retired soldier has been asked to prove that he is an Indian citizen and not an 'illegal Bangladeshi migrant'.

Assam-Foreigners' Tribunal has served a notice to  Mohd Azmal Hoque, who retired in 2016 as a junior commissioned officer, asking him to prove citizenship, ANI reported.

The notice, which has put Hoque in the 'doubtful-voter' category, has asked him to prove that he is an Indian citizen by appearing in the local tribunal and furnishing relevant documents, said a report in DNA.

The report quotes Hoque as saying that he missed the first date on September 11 as the notice landed at his doorstep later. He now has to depose on October 13.

A report by CNN News 18 says that Hoque is not the first in his family to be subjected to this ordeal. In 2012, his wife Mamtaj Begum was summoned by the tribunal to prove her citizenship.

'I have served the Indian Army for 30 years. In 2012, I got a notice saying I was a doubtful foreigner, but I submitted all documents in the tribunal court which had declared me an Indian citizen. Why do I have to be humiliated so many times?' Hoque was quoted as saying in the report.

Meanwhile, Assam director general of police told ANI that they're looking at why the notice was served to Hoque.  -- Agencies
