The Madras High Court today reiterated that by-polls to the RK Nagar constituency have to be held before December 31. The Radhakrishnan Nagar seat in Tamil Nadu had fallen vacant following the demise of then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the elections were earlier scheduled to be held on April 12.

The Madras High Court had in September too directed that the RK Nagar bypolls be conducted by December 31. However, the Election Commission had cancelled the by-election after investigations led to the discovery of a  cash-for-votes scam where voters were being offered incentives in the form of cash and other materials.

Jayalalithaa had won the RK Nagar by-polls by over 1.5 lakh votes during the Assembly polls in 2015.
