In a major gaffe, Pentagon's official Twitter account has retweeted a tweet urging United States President Donald Trump to resign.

Though the post was deleted later, the damage was done by then as many of the 5.2 million followers of the official Defense Department account captured the "error" and tweeted the same.

A Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Rob Manning, in a statement, said it "would not be endorsed by the Department of Defense."

The original tweet was posted by a person whose Twitter handle is @ProudResister. It said, "The solution is simple. Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It's a crime as is your hypocrisy."

Manning says the person who had retweeted the item was an authorised operator of Department's Twitter account.

"The operator caught this error and immediately deleted it," the statement added.
