22:05   Pentagon retweets post calling on Trump to resign
In a major gaffe, Pentagon's official Twitter account has retweeted a tweet urging United States President Donald Trump to resign.

Though the post was deleted later, the damage was done by then as many of the 5.2 million followers of the official Defense Department account captured the "error" and tweeted the same.

A Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Rob Manning, in a statement, said it "would not be endorsed by the Department of Defense."

The original tweet was posted by a person whose Twitter handle is @ProudResister. It said, "The solution is simple. Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It's a crime as is your hypocrisy."

Manning says the person who had retweeted the item was an authorised operator of Department's Twitter account.

"The operator caught this error and immediately deleted it," the statement added.

21:54   Don't they know they belong to the same party? Scindia slams Tharoor
Amid a raging row over upcoming epic drama film Padmavati, Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday hit back at his fellow party leader Shashi Tharoor over his criticism of so called valourous maharajas. I think he should study history, I am Jyotiraditya Scindia and I am proud of my past, Scindia said.

The 46-year-old Congress MP, who himself belongs to Gwalior royal family, made these comments after Tharoor remarked that the so called valourous maharajas had scurried to accommodate themselves when the British trampled over their honour and that they were now after a filmmaker claiming prestige was at stake.

Facing the ire of BJP supporters, Tharoor later clarified on Twitter: I am dismayed that some BJP supporters are claiming I attacked Rajput honour. I spoke about the Maharajahs who made their accommodations w/the British. I have never made a communal comment in my life.

As for specific concerns of the Rajput community, peoples sentiments must be respected in the interests of Indias diversity& harmony. Rajput valour is part of our history & is not in question. BJP & its censors should take these concerns into account.

21:30   Padmavati release to be delayed? Censor Board returns movie
The Central Board of Film Certification has sent Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed "Padmavati" back to the makers as the application for the certification was "incomplete".

According to the CBFC, the movie, which has triggered protests by several Rajput groups, will be reviewed as per the set norms once it is sent back to the board after sorting out the issue.

"The film was submitted for certification last week. We examined the documents, as we normally do. It was conveyed to the makers that their application was incomplete. They had to rectify and send it back, we will view it when it comes back to us," a source said.

"When they (makers) rectify the deficiency we will again scrutinise it once more and when the turn comes we will examine it (film for certification)," the source added.

The source, however, refused to divulge details of the "deficiency in the application" on account of which it was returned to the makers for rectification.

When asked about the date for screening of the film, the source said, "When it comes back to us we will put it in queue and see when the turn comes, there will be no exception (in case of 'Padmavati')."

21:05   Fresh plea in SC against objectionable content in 'Padmavati'
A fresh plea has been moved in the Supreme Court today to remove alleged objectionable scenes and registration of an FIR against the makers of upcoming Bollywood flick 'Padmavati'.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud agreed to hear the plea but refused for urgent listing of the matter.

The petitioner, advocate M L Sharma, who mentioned the matter for urgent listing also sought a direction for removal of all scenes of alleged 'character assassination' of Queen Padmavati from the movie before its release.

The Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor starrer Bollywood movie is slated for release on December 1.

The plea has sought directions to the Centre, the director of the movie Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Viacom 18, which co-produces the movie along with the director and the Central Board of Film Certification.

The set of the movie was vandalised twice -- in Jaipur and Kolhapur -- and the director was roughed up by members of Karni Sena during the Jaipur schedule of the film earlier this year.

20:20   PM fears transformed image of Rahul Gandhi: Sharad Pawar
NCP chief Sharad Pawar today alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "feared" the "transformed image" of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi due to which the BJP was raking up old issues such as Bofors to "defame" the Gandhi family.

He claimed the BJP-led central and Gujarat governments were rattled by the "massive response" the Congress was getting in poll-bound Gujarat.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi fears the transformed image of Rahul Gandhi due to which the BJP is raking up issues such as Bofors against the Gandhi family to defame them," Pawar said.

He said former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was "acquitted" in the Bofors case a long time ago.

"Now he is not alive and neither is the Italian who was allegedly involved in this case. Despite this, the Centre is trying to reopen the case by filing a charge sheet in court. This is because the government is scared of Rahul Gandhi and they want to defame late Rajiv Gandhi," he alleged.

Praising the former prime minister, Pawar said Rajiv Gandhi was a visionary leader.

19:34   Mother's love prevailed to get Majid back home: Mehbooba Mufti
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said "mother's love prevailed" to get college student and footballer Majid Arshid Khan, who had joined the Lashkar-e-Tayiba a week ago, "back home".

Arshid walked into a security camp in south Kashmir last night and surrendered with his arms and ammunition, officials said in Srinagar.

He was whisked away to an undisclosed destination early this morning. The college student, a goalkeeper for his local team in Anantnag in south Kashmir, is believed to have turned to militancy after a close friend was killed in an encounter.

"A mothers love prevailed. Her impassioned appeal helped in getting Majid, an aspiring footballer back home. Every time a youngster resorts to violence, it is his family which suffers the most (sic)," Mufti said in a post on Twitter.

19:06   EC verdict: Nitish wins battle for control of JD-U
In a big win for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Election Commission today recognised the group led by him as the Janata Dal-United, rejecting the claim of the Sharad Yadav faction over the party's name and election symbol.

Kumar and Yadav parted ways after the former decided to join hands with the BJP in July, triggering a battle for the control of the party.

Yadav claimed that by ending the alliance with Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD and deserting the greater 'grand alliance', Kumar had gone against the party's national executive's decision to oppose the BJP.

As the rift between the two widened, Yadav held a 'national executive' of the JD-U where Chhotubhai Amarsang Vasava was appointed as the acting president.

Vasava approached the Election Commission staking claim over the party and its poll symbol 'arrow'. Yadav all along maintained that the faction led by him was the real JD-U.

The EC, in its order issued today, said the group led by Kumar "has demonstrated overwhelming majority support" in the legislature wing as well as the majority in the national council of the party, which is the apex organisational body of the JD-U.

"The group led by Nitish Kumar is hereby recognised as the Janata Dal -United... Consequently, the group led by Nitish Kumar is entitled to use the reserved symbol 'Arrow' of the party as a recognised State Party in Bihar," the order read.

18:31   Irani corners Tharoor over his 'maharajas' remarks
Union Minister Smriti Irani, on Friday took a jibe at Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his comments on kings amidst the row over film 'Padmavati'.

She targeted Tharoor for his observation about ongoing protest by the descendents of Rajput rulers over Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie 'Padmavati'.

Tharoor had reportedly said that the so-called 'maharajas', (kings) who have been after a filmmaker (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) by claiming that their honour is at stake, actually ran away when the British crushed their self-respect and honour.

Commenting on Tharoor's observation, Irani tweeted: "Did all the Maharajs (kings) kneel in front of the British? What will Jyotiraditya Scindia, Diggi Raja (Digvijaya Singh) and Amarinder Singh say on Shashi Tharoor's comments?"

However, when the issue snowballed, Tharoor took to Twitter to clarify his comments.

"I am dismayed that some BJP supporters are claiming I attacked Rajput honour..I spoke about the Maharajahs who made their accommodations w/the (with the) British. I have never made a communal comment in my life."

He further added that Rajput valour is not questionable.

15:52   Padmavati protesters block tourist entry to Chittorgarh Fort
Protesters today blocked the entry to the Chittorgarh Fort, which houses Padmini's Palace, amid protests against Bollywood film 'Padmavati' across Rajasthan and various parts of the country.

However, SP of Chittorgarh Prashan Kumar Khamsera said the fort, a world heritage site in Rajasthan, is not officially closed. "We have been informed by the protesters that entry to the fort will be blocked for tourists. We have made ample security arrangements to deal with the situation," he said.

Member of Sarv Samaj Sangathan and president of Jauhar Samriti Sansthan, Ummed Singh said, "A dharna demanding a ban on 'Padmavati' is continuing for the last eight days at Padan Pole. The Chittorgarh Fort will be closed for tourists today."

The Sarv Samaj Sangathan and some other outfits have termed a song in the film, which shows actor Deepika Padukone as Queen Padmini dancing in a courtyard, "crossing dramatic license".

The Karni Sena had alleged distortion of historical facts in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film starring Padukone, Shahid Kapur and Ranveer Singh. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation managing director Pradeep Kumar Borad has ruled out any change in operations of luxury train - Palace on Wheels - and said the train would be operating through the circuit and will be going to Chittorgarh.

On whether the tourists would be taken to the Chittorgarh Fort, he said the local administration be able to comment on it better. In March, Chittorgarh Fort was vandalised by a group of men who broke mirrors installed at the Padmini Palace of the Rajput queen. VK Sasikala's husband M Natarajan gets a two-year jail term for tax evasion.

15:34   A peek into the fascinating mind of Elon Musk
'What he has done is something that very few living people can claim: Painstakingly bulldozed, with no experience whatsoever, into two fields with ridiculously high barriers to entry -- car manufacturing (Tesla) and rocketry (SpaceX) -- and created the best products in those industries, as measured by just about any meaningful metric you can think of. In the process, he's managed to sell the world on his capability to achieve objectives so lofty that from the mouth of anyone else, they'd be called fantasies.'

Everyone knows Elon Musk, the futurist CEO behind Tesla and SpaceX with dreams whose scale in lesser minds would be called fantasies.

Neil Strauss, who spent 9 months 'watching Musk do everything from strategize Mars landings with his rocket-engineering team to plan the next breakthroughs with his artificial-intelligence experts, says he 'learned he is someone far, far different from what his myth and reputation suggest.'

14:35   Nanny-ism carried to an extreme: Tharoor on demonetisation
Hitting out at the Centre over demonetisation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that telling the people that they cannot have access to the money in their accounts was "nanny-ism carried to an extreme."

The former Union minister, who was speaking at an event here last evening, also criticised the BJP-led government over the way GST was rolled out, although, he said, the concept of one nation one tax was "a great idea."

"Demonetisation was an exercise in telling people what notes they could hold... The government telling us that you cannot have access to your own money in your account was nanny-ism carried to an extreme," Tharoor said.

He was participating in a debate on 'We are living in a nanny state', chaired by Vir Sanghvi, at the eighth edition of 'Tata Literature Live'. Tharoor was speaking for the motion along with JNU professor Makarand Paranjape, while senior journalist Chandan Mitra and industrialist Sunil Alagh were against the motion.

"Intention of GST was a wonderful thing. Having one nation one tax is a great idea but in practise what this government has done, it has created something for the state, the bureaucrats and not to help the people.

"Instead of one nation one tax, we have been given three taxes, six slabs underneath and 37 forms a year to be filed... There is a nanny state sitting over you," Tharoor said.

He also criticised the beef ban, saying it has destroyed livelihoods of millions in Maharashtra alone. "The beef ban in its conception and intention is indeed nanny state behaviour. The government is trying to determine what people put in their mouths, even in their homes... This nanny state has destroyed the livelihoods of millions in Maharashtra alone," the former Union minister said.

14:15   Deepika is not the President of India to give orders: Karni Sena
Rajput Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi on Friday lashed out at actress Deepika Padukone, saying she was not the president of India to roll out orders on the release of the movie 'Padmavati'.

Speaking to ANI, Kalvi said, "Who will tolerate the fact that Rani Padmavati is being shown as the lover of Allauddin Khilji? Deepika Padukone, in her statement, said that the film would be released at any cost. She is not the president of this nation. She is trying to provoke us. I, the founder of Rajput Karni Sena, am saying that this film will not be released."

He added he condemned Sanjay Leela Bhansali for even using Rani Padmavati's name. "If I ever meet him I will ask him to not use my mother's name, i.e. Rani Padmavati. I will not tolerate this," Kalvi said.

He further said it was not only the Karni Sena, but everyone in the society who was coming forward to speak against this film.

"Now I will request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a stand and stop this film from being released. The Centre needs to decide what has to be done here," Kalvi added.

Earlier on Thursday, a member of the Sena said if need be, an action would be taken against Padukone.Speaking to ANI, Mahipal Singh Makrana said,

"The Rajput Karni Sena is fighting to protect the image of women being portrayed in the films. We never raise a hand on women but if need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshman did to Shurpanakha for violating the rules and culture of India.

"Earlier, Kalvi said the Sena would gather in lakhs and call for a nation-wide shutdown on December 1."Our ancestors wrote history with blood, hence, we will not let anyone blacken it," the Sena chief added. -- ANI

13:41   Moody's action spruces up India's investment credentials
The sovereign rating upgrade by global agency Moody's has put India alongside Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and the Philippines in terms of investment climate.

In effect, India has become the largest economy among Baa2-rated sovereigns, according to Moody's. The agency today upgraded India's sovereign credit rating by a notch to 'Baa2' with stable outlook after a gap of 13 years, saying reforms will foster sustainable growth.

Sovereign rating is issued to national governments and a barometer of the country's investment climate. It gives investors insight into the level of risks, including political, associated with investing in a particular country.

According to Moody's, Baa rating is medium-grade and subject to moderate credit risk while the modifier 2 indicates a mid-range ranking. The government and some commentators in India have been pitching hard for a rating upgrade citing the country's strong economic fundamentals, political stability and a slew of reforms.

Some of the key reforms that the Narendra Modi government has initiated include the Goods and Services Tax (GST), demonetisation, Aadhaar, bank recapitalisation, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and targeted delivery of benefits through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, among others.

12:50   Babri Masjid: Sri Sri meets AIMPLB's Khalid Rasheed
Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Friday reached Lucknow's Aishbagh Eidgah to meet All India Muslim Personal Law Board's executive president Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali.

Speaking to the media, the Art of Living founder said, "We both agree that we have to build the bridge between the two communities. We have to create a friendly atmosphere of belongingness and togetherness so that we can solve all the issues of the country."

He added that there was really no conflict between these Hindu and Islamic communities as they have been living together for centuries.

"We have to take forward the idea of brotherhood through the talk. We all respect the law, but the law cannot connect the hearts of people. A law will remain a law and people will have to follow it but what is important is that the feeling of togetherness and harmony has to come from within. That will remain forever," the spiritual guru said.

He added that the leaders of both the communities were trying their best to make ends meet.

"One thing which I can foresee from this discussion is nation's betterment. But we all should have patience as it may take time," Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said.

AIMPLB chief Khalid Rasheed said the two leaders held discussions on how to bring these two communities together and spread communal harmony in the entire nation.

"We are thankful to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar for teaching people to live their lives in an orderly manner. The important thing is to erase internal disputes between these two communities in order to take the nation towards a path of peace and development. I believe if the leaders of these two communities keep on meeting on regular intervals then all the issues will be solved eventually," he added.

The mosque was demolished by Hindu Karsevaks on December 6, 1992 in Ayodhya. The country witnessed massive riots in which over 2000 people were killed. The Hindus claim that it is the birthplace of Lord Rama where a mosque was built in 1528-29 AD by Mir Baqi.

Since the mosque was built on orders of the Mughal emperor Babur, it was named Babri Masjid.

It is notable that the Supreme Court will hear the 13 appeals in the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute on December 5, 2017, the eve of the 25th anniversary of the demolition of the 15th century mosque. -- PTI

According to the complaint, young woman alleged Stallone, who was 40 at the time, invited the victim to his room at the Las Vegas Hilton, reported metro.co.uk.

The victim reportedly claimed that she was "intimidated" into having sex with the 'Creed' star and his bodyguard, adding the two also forced her to perform oral sex on both him and Stallone.

However, the spokesperson of 'The Expendables' star has denied the allegations in a statement, reading, "This is ridiculous, categorically false story. No one was ever aware of this story until it was published today, including Mr Stallone. At no time was Mr Stallone ever contacted by authorities or anyone else regarding this matter." The actor further claimed that the incident never happened. -- PTI

11:49   Padmavati 'saviours' didnt care about British invaders: Tharoor
Amid a row over film Padmavati, former Union minister Shashi Tharoor claimed today that the "so-called valourous maharajas" had scurried to accommodate themselves when the British "trampled" over their honour and were now after a filmmaker claiming their prestige was at stake.

At an event Tharoor was asked why his book, An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India, had a "whiff of victimhood" when he holds that Indians had connived with the English.

"In fact, every single one of these so called valorous maharajas, who today are after a Mumbai filmmaker because their honour is at stake, they were less concerned about their honour when the British were trampling all over it. They scurried to accommodate themselves. So let's face it, there is no question, that we were complicit," he said.

The Congress leader's comments come at a time when Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie Padmavati has been in the eye of a storm as the Shri Rajput Karni Sena and some other outfits have accused the filmmaker of distorting history and hurting Hindu sentiments.

Tharoor, meanwhile, said that his book was "not a plea that 'Oh! We are poor victims, forgive us". It very much points out that the British empire is not what many made people believe it to be, the former minister said.Tharoor said Mahatma Gandhi showed mirror to the British to made them realise about their acts. -- PTI

11:39   For Narendra Modi, India's regeneration must be moral and economic
The modifications of the procedures and rates of the goods and services tax have, quite predictably, drawn sharply partisan responses. This is not surprising in view of the fact that India is, once again, in the throes of a mini-election season. The results, when they are finally announced on December 18, may not suggest a close fight. However, in the midst of an election campaign, all elections appear to be bitterly contested - as they undoubtedly are, despite whatever the final outcome reveals.

11:33   Moody's India rating upgrade long overdue: Arvind Subramanian
Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian on Friday said while the enhancement of India's rating by Moody was a welcome move; it was "long overdue".

"It's a welcome development, but we also feel it was long overdue. It is a recognition of the actions that the government has undertaken on GST, bankruptcy and all of that," Subramanian said.

Earlier in the day, Moody upgraded India's sovereign rating to Baa2 from Baa3 and changed the outlook to stable from positive, thus providing a much-needed impetus to the Modi government.

Reports suggest that the global rating company said the reforms undertaken by the government would lead to an enhanced business environment, fuelling the foreign and domestic investment, and subsequently the growth momentum. It also noted that the reforms implemented reduced the risk of a sharp increase in debt, even in potential downside scenarios.

However, Moody argued that measures such as the Goods and Services Tax,  demonetisation, and others would need time to settle in, and the impact would be witnessed in due course of time. It also claimed that India's growth potential superseded that of many other sovereign nations. -- ANI

11:19   Kashmir footballer-turned-militant surrenders
Majid Khan, who joined the Lashkar-e-Tayiba last week, has surrendered before security forces in Kashmir.

The family says Majid suddenly disappeared last Thursday. Days later, a photograph surfaced on Whatsapp showing him posing with an assault rifle.

Majid, a second-year under-graduate commerce student at the government degree college Anantnag, was the LeTs latest recruit in the Valley.

He is a renowned footballer of the town and had passed class 10 and 12 board examinations with high scores.

Many believe the death of his close friend Yawar Nisar was a turning point in Majids life.

Nisar had joined the militants in July this year and was killed in a gun battle with security forces barely a month later.

Police had described Nisar as an over-ground worker and stone-pelter before joining active militancy.

10:49   Democracy is safe in India because of Hindus: Union minister
Union minister Giriraj Singh has said democracy is "safe" in the country as long as Hindus remain in the majority.
Delivering a lecture yesterday, the minister said social harmony and development would be "in danger" the day the population of the majority community starts decreasing.

He said nationalism was in a "kind of danger" due to demographic changes.
"...Democracy is safe in the country as long as majority (Hindu) population is there. The day the population of the majority community starts decreasing, the democracy, development and social harmony will be in danger," he said at the lecture on nationalism in Bhopal.
"Hindu population has dipped in 54 districts in states like Uttar Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, besides some other states. These districts are Muslim majority and this demographic change is a threat to the unity and integrity of the country," the BJP leader said.
He said a family planning law for all faiths should be enacted.
"...With all responsibility, I say that the social harmony has taken a beating and nationalism has declined (in areas) where the population of Hindus has declined," he said. -- PTI

09:49   HC reserves order on plea challenging gag order on 'The Wire'
The Gujarat high court has reserved its order on a petition filed by online news portal The Wire challenging a gag order passed by a lower court in a civil defamation case filed by BJP chief Amit Shah's son Jay Shah.

Jay Shah submitted his affidavit before the high court judge Paresh Upadhyay on Thursday. In it, Shah said the appeal against the ex-parte interim order was "not maintainable" and "deserves to be dismissed".

He also said the applicant has not given "any justification" behind the plea.

The petition was filed by the portal's management, the Foundation for Independent Journalism, challenging the gag order passed by a civil court on October 12 on a story carried by it (The Wire) titled 'The Golden Touch of Jay Amit Shah'.

The petitioner had told the high court that the order passed by a civil court had not shown how the story had affected Shah's reputation.

The high court, however, did not grant interim relief to the petitioner, saying that it first wanted to hear the respondent.

09:22   PM fears transformed image of Rahul Gandhi: Sharad Pawar
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "feared" the "transformed image" of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi due to which the Bharatiya Janata Party was raking up old issues such as Bofors to "defame" the Gandhi family.
He claimed the BJP-led central and Gujarat governments were rattled by the "massive response" the Congress was getting in poll-bound Gujarat.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi fears the transformed image of Rahul Gandhi due to which the BJP is raking up issues such as Bofors against the Gandhi family to defame them," Pawar alleged while interacting with party workers at Chandrapur in east Maharashtra.
"The nation developed because of his vision. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi (both former PMs) used their power to eradicate poverty," the NCP chief said.
Pawar claimed that wrong policies adopted by the government in recent times had hit hard farmers and industries and there was no hope or solution in sight for them. -- PTI

09:02   Mohammad Hafeez suspended again for illegal action
Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect due to illegal action.

The International Cricket Council announced that an independent assessment has found Hafeez's bowling action to be illegal.

Hafeez had earlier undergone a biomechanics test in England for his suspected bowling action, where he was asked to bowl 24 deliveries in the test, which lasted for more than 90 minutes.

As reported in Pakistan newspaper Dawn, the test revealed that Hafeez bent his arm more than 15 degrees for the majority of his deliveries, which is illegal according to ICC regulations.

"Pursuant to Article 11.5 of the [ICC's] Regulations and with the consent of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Hafeez may be able to bowl in domestic cricket events played under the auspices of the PCB," a statement read.

Hafeez came under the radar during the third One-Day International against Sri Lanka on October 18 and had undergone an independent assessment of his bowling action on November 1 at Loughborough University.

With the suspension in place, the 37-year-old can apply for a re-assessment after modifying his bowling action in accordance with clause 4.5 of the regulations.

Prior to this, the right-arm bowler was first suspended from bowling in December 2014. Following which he was suspended the second time for his illegal action in the Galle Test against Pakistan in June 2015.

Due to his two-time suspension within 24 months, he was suspended from bowling in international cricket for 12 months from July 2015.

08:34   Trump wants China to put maximum pressure on N Korea: White House
United States President Donald Trump favors China taking a greater role in putting maximum pressure on North Korea, the White House said today, following Beijing's decision to send a special envoy to Pyongyang.
Chinese President Xi Jinping's special envoy, Song Tao, will visit North Korea today to inform its leadership about the outcome of the recent national congress of the ruling Communist Party of China.
"The president certainly favors China taking a greater role in putting maximum pressure on North Korea," White House Press Secretary Sarah sanders told reporters at her daily news conference.
The Chinese envoy's visit comes days after Trump's completion of a five-nation tour of Asia, during which he urged Xi to do more to pressure North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un to give up nuclear weapons programme.
"Certainly, any effort in order to denuclearise the Peninsula there in North Korea, then China participating in that, the president certainly supports those efforts," Sanders said.
Trump took to Twitter to welcome China's decision.
"China is sending an Envoy and Delegation to North Korea - A big move, we'll see what happens!" Trump said in a tweet yesterday. -- PTI

08:19   Boost for Modi as Moody's upgrades India's credit rating
United States-based Moody's today upgraded India's sovereign credit rating by a notch to 'Baa2' with a stable outlook citing improved growth prospects driven by economic and institutional reforms.
The rating upgrade comes after a gap of 13 years. Moody's had last upgraded India's rating to 'Baa3' in 2004.
In 2015, the rating outlook was changed to 'positive' from 'stable'.
The 'Baa3' rating was the lowest investment grade -- just a notch above 'junk' status.
"The decision to upgrade the ratings is underpinned by Moody's expectation that continued progress on economic and institutional reforms will, over time, enhance India's high growth potential and its large and stable financing base for government debt, and will likely contribute to a gradual decline in the general government debt burden over the medium term," Moodys said in a statement.
The global ratings agency, however, cautioned that high debt burden remains a constraint on the country's credit profile.
"Moody's believes that the reforms put in place have reduced the risk of a sharp increase in debt, even in potential downside scenarios," it said.
Moody's Investors Service upgraded the Government of India's local and foreign currency issuer ratings to 'Baa2' from 'Baa3' and changed the outlook on the rating to stable from positive, the statement said.
Stating that reforms will foster sustainable growth prospects, the US-based agency said the government is mid-way through a wide-ranging programme of economic and institutional reforms.
"While a number of important reforms remain at the design phase, Moody's believes that those implemented to-date will advance the government's objective of improving the business climate, enhancing productivity, stimulating foreign and domestic investment, and ultimately fostering strong and sustainable growth," Moodys said.
The reform programme will thus complement the existing "shock-absorbance capacity" provided by India's strong growth potential and improving global competitiveness, it added.

00:08   Islamic State has lost 95 per cent of its 'caliphate': US-led coalition
The Islamic State group has lost 95 per cent of the cross-border "caliphate" it declared three years ago in Iraq and Syria, the US-led coalition fighting it has said.

"Since our coalition was formed in 2014, IS has lost 95 per cent of the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria," Washington's envoy to the coalition, Brett McGurk, said after a meeting in Jordan.

The jihadist group swept across Syria and Iraq the same year, declaring a cross-border "caliphate" in territory roughly the size of Britain, attracting thousands of foreign fighters.

But several military offensives, including those backed by the US-led coalition, have since seen IS lose most areas it once controlled.

"More than 7.5 million people have now been liberated from IS," McGurk said in a statement, adding that the group's finances are now "at their lowest levels to date".
