20:51   UK reduces terror threat level to 'severe' days after Manchester bombing
Britain's terror threat level has been reduced to "severe" from "critical," UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

"The public should be clear about what this means. A threat level of 'severe' means an attack is highly likely -- the country should remain vigilant," May said.

The decision to lower the threat rating from its highest level was made by the country's Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre in light of the arrests made in the Manchester attack investigation, May said. The level had been raised to "critical" after Monday's deadly bombing.

Investigators are continuing efforts to try to contain the network they believe is behind the suicide attack by Salman Abedi, 22, a British national of Libyan descent who targeted an Ariana Grande show.

Armed police will patrol events in Manchester, London and elsewhere this weekend as Britain marks its first holiday since the Manchester bombing. But the deployment of soldiers on the streets in support of police will be phased out starting Monday night, May said.

16:45   Amarinder speaks to Rajasthan CM over assault on 4 Sikh men
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today spoke to his Rajasthan counterpart Vasundhara Raje and sought her intervention to ensure a probe into the alleged assault on four Sikh men by a crowd in Ajmer in April.

Describing the incident as "unfortunate", he told reporters that the Rajasthan government needed to fix culpability and ensure that the culprits were punished.

A video, purportedly shot on April 24, surfaced a couple of days back showing a crowd dragging four Sikh men out of a vehicle and thrashing them at Chainpura in Ajmer district. The Sikh men were reportedly 'sewadars' (volunteers) from a gurdwara at Alwar in Rajasthan, who were collecting donations.

The residents of Chainpura had alleged that the four men had molested their women. The police had taken them into custody but released them later saying they were not involved in any molestation.

The Sikh men were reportedly asked by the police to file a cross FIR against those who had assaulted them but they refused to do so.

Singh expressed concern over media reports that there were "efforts" to give the incident a "communal" hue.

14:39   Clinton attacks Trump, recalls Nixon's impeachment of justice
Former Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has ripped into US President Donald Trump, drawing parallels between him and former president Richard Nixon whose presidency she said ended in "disgrace"
with his "impeachment" for obstruction of justice.

Clinton, who returned to her alma mater at Wellesley College in Massachusetts yesterday to give a commencement speech 48 years after she graduated, referred to the mood on the campus following Nixon's election as President in 1968.

"And by the way, we were furious about the past presidential election of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice after firing the person running the
investigation into him at the Department of Justice," Clinton, 69, said to thunderous cheers from students.

Through her comments on "impeachment" and "obstruction of justice", which drew the loudest cheers, she made a thinly-veiled attack against 70-year-old Trump for firing former FBI Director James Comey who was leading the investigation into links between Trump's campaign team and Russia's meddling in the presidential elections.

14:16   Kerala takes lead against new cattle slaughter rules
Expressing strong objection to the new central government ruling that cows and buffaloes sold at animal markets across India can no longer be used for slaughter, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is expected to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to sources.

The state is expected to implement any changes to existing rules only after a response to the chief minister's letter.

"If they have banned the slaughter of cattle today, they will ban the consumption of fish tomorrow," Vijayan retorted. "New livestock regulation law will rob lakhs of jobs, cripple leather industry. Primarily an attack on our poor, dalits & farmers," he said in a tweet.

The All India Meat and Livestock Exporters Association agreed and said the decision will badly hit livelihoods. "It is the unproductive cattle that arrives in large numbers for sale as their maintenance cost per day is quite high. The high-yielding milching animals rarely arrive for sale," spokesperson of the association, Fauzan Alavi, said in Lucknow.

12:40   After skipping Sonia Gandhi's lunch, Nitish Kumar arrives for PM's invite
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who sent regrets and a representative for Congress president Sonia Gandhi's lunch party for opposition leaders on yesterday pleading prior engagements, arrived in Delhi only a day later to lunch with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi is hosting lunch in honour of visiting Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth and has invited senior leaders like Kumar.

The Bihar chief minister turning down Gandhi's lunch invitation - designed as a show of opposition unity on the day the Modi government turns 3 - had caused eyebrows to be raised. His yes to PM Modi has sparked a massive political buzz. It comes as the Congress is trying to gather opposition parties on a common platform to test the ground for a possible alliance of parties to take on the BJP in the 2019 national election when PM Modi will seek a second term.

"I was invited by PM in honour of Mauritius Prime Minister and you know we have deep emotional bonds with people there. Around 52 per cent of population there has origins in Bihar," Nitish Kumar explained after a cabinet meeting on Friday evening also saying that he has sought a separate appointment with the Prime Minister on Saturday to discuss de-siltation of the Ganga river. Leaders of his Janata Dal United said not much must be read into his response to the two lunch invites.

11:50   UPDATE: Did Latur water crisis bring down Fadnavis' chopper?
Among the factors that could have led to the chief minister's helicopter's crash figures an unprecedented one: Latur's severe water shortage.

On Thursday, Devendra Fadnavis had a close shave when the Sikorsky S76C helicopter crashed within minutes of take-off from a temporary helipad at Shivaji Mahavidyalaya school ground in Latur district. Even as investigations into the accident have begun, a video of the crash, circulating on social media, has raised the eyebrows of helicopter pilots and aviation experts over one aspect of the take-off. The dust clouds that billowed from under the chopper, that is.

Generally, pilots operating from temporary helipads ensure the place is watered well. But that doesn't seem to have been done in this case," said a helicopter pilot. And there in comes the issue of water shortage.

11:09   Government may reduce PF contribution to increase take-home salary
The labour ministry has proposed to reduce the employers contribution to the Employees Provident Fund from 12 per cent to 10 per cent.

The proposal, which will be opposed by trade unions, will come up for approval in the meeting of the Central Board of Trustees on Saturday.

Around 50 million employees in the country receive provident fund contributions.

The move, according to the labour ministry, will increase the take-home salary of employees. But trade unions opposing the move termed it an attack on social security.

According to the agenda paper of the meeting, the Employees Provident Fund Organisations CBT will consider a proposal to lower the rate of contribution to be paid by employer and equal contribution by employees from the present 12 per cent to 10 per cent by issue of appropriate order by the Central government.

The Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, empowers the Central government to lower the contribution rate and the government intends to issue a notification to effect the change.

The ministry has also said that the main grounds on which it has requested the EPFO to place the proposal in the agenda are that there were demands from various quarters on many occasions to review the present rate of EPF contribution and placing it at par with other social security schemes, such as the National Pension System.

Airlines are reporting lesser number of cases of unruly passengers following the government's decision to come out with a 'national no-fly list' to deal with such incidents, Civil Aviation Minister Gajapathi Raju said on Friday.
Raju said he had advised Air India to lift the ban imposed on Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, who had claimed to have hit an Air India staffer, after the lawmaker assured that he would not repeat such a behaviour.
"Airlines are reporting lesser problems," Raju told NDTV when asked what impact has the proposed 'national no-fly list' had.
The minister added that Gaikwad had written to him saying he will behave himself and such a thing will not happen.
"I advised the airlines to withdraw the ban because the civil aviation requirement isn't in their favour till the government amends it (the rules)," Raju said.
Earlier this month, the government released draft rules for a "national no-fly list" of unruly passengers for all domestic carriers, proposing a ban on flying from three months upto an indefinite period.
The draft is an amendment to the existing Civil Aviation Requirement, a set of rules on unruly and disruptive passengers.
These are being placed in the public domain for 30 days for comments and feedback from stakeholders following which the government will come out with final amendments by June 30.
