President Pranab Mukherjee has cancelled his visit to Kanchipuram scheduled for Wednesday to address the 1000th birth anniversary of Saint Ramanujacharya.

The reason for the cancellation was not immediately known, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman refused to comment on the matter.

However, an advance security team which visited Kanchipuram in its report is believed to have stated that there was no proper roofing and improper arrangements for the dais, which might pose a risk to the security of the President. According to sources, the organisers were ready to rectify this lapse.

The President had also been requested by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi to visit her father, the veteran M Karunanidhi, on Wednesday but Mukherjee had not indicated his consent.

The DMK is organising a mega event on June 3 in Chennai to mark Karunanidhi's 93rd birthday, with almost the entire non-BJP Opposition in attendance in what is a massive show of strength at a time when the political situation in the state is extremely fluid.

However, the President will travel to Ooty as scheduled, spending Monday night at the hill station from where he is expected to leave for New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
