Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has won the crucial presidential elections, media reports from Iran say.

Initial reports suggest that Rouhani has defeated his closest rival, hardliner cleric Ebrahim Raisi, by seven million votes.

Iran voted yesterday in the presidential elections.

Rouhani faced stiff competition from Raisi, who has positioned himself as a defender of the poor and called for a much tougher line with the West.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also supported Raisi.

The election was viewed as a referendum on the nuclear deal that Iran struck with world powers.

Rouhani, a moderate, sought re-election on the nuclear deal and reviving the stalled economy. -- Agencies
