22:59   No politician treated 'more unfairly,' says Trump
Donald Trump gave vent to frustrations over his mounting political problems today, declaring that no president in US history had been treated "more unfairly."

During a commencement address at the US Coast Guard Academy, Trump urged graduating cadets to follow his example and "fight, fight, fight. Never, ever, give up. Things will work out just fine."

"Look at the way I've been treated lately. Especially by the media. No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly. You can't let them get you down," he said.

The outburst came amid intensifying pressure on the president in the wake of his firing of James Comey as director of the FBI last week, in the midst of a probe into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian attempts to tilt the US election in his favor.

The Senate Intelligence Commitee announced today that they have asked Comey to testify.

Come May 21, Congress party is all set to launch a nationwide signature campaign for 33 per cent reservation of seats in Assembly and Parliamentary elections for women.

Mahila Congress has zeroed in on the assassination day of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi - May 21 - to launch this campaign. This campaign will last till August 20 - his birth anniversary.

Mahila Congress President Shobha Oza said, "We will launch this massive signature drive throughout the country and force the government to fulfil Rajiv ji's dream of women empowerment. Through this campaign, we want women to get 33 per cent reservation in assembly and parliamentary elections."

It's been more than two decades that the Women's Reservation Bill, which is technically the 108th Constitution Amendment Bill, has been 'pending' for passage in the Lok Sabha.

It was during former Prime Minister Deve Gowda's tenure that Women's Reservation Bill was introduced in 1996. While the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010, it still has a 'pending' status in the Lok Sabha.

21:46   Putin offers transcript of Trump meeting with Lavrov
Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to provide a transcript of a controversial Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, raising the stakes in an affair that has sent the White House into a tailspin.

Speaking at a press conference in Sochi, Russia, Putin dismissed allegations that Trump had shared top-secret security intelligence with Russian diplomats as "political schizophrenia."

"If the US administration finds it necessary, we are ready to provide the record of the conversation between Trump and Lavrov to the Senate and Congress," Putin said.

The intervention by Putin could turn up the pressure on the White House to provide its own transcript of the meeting. The Senate intelligence committee has already demanded a briefing on what was said at the meeting from members of the Trump administration who were present.

21:14   Sharad Pawar turns down Sonia's offer to be candidate for presidential polls
Sharad Pawar has cancelled himself from the Opposition's list of potential candidates for the presidential elections, turning down a request from Congress president Sonia Gandhi, his Nationalist Congress Party said today.

"Sonia Gandhi requested Sharad Pawar to be the opposition's candidate for President, but he has asked her to find someone else," said NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik.

The NCP assesses that the Opposition does not have the strength and support to field a seasoned and senior leader like its party chief for President.

It would not like Pawar to be the losing candidate in a contest for the post. Party sources said the only way Pawar could reconsider is if a united opposition can ensure that the BJP-led National Democratic Government is unable to get any more numbers in the electoral college than it already has.

The Indian Navy has thwarted a piracy attempt on a Liberian vessel in the Gulf of Aden, in a swift operation involving marine commandos and an armed chopper.

After reaching out to the vessel, the navy's 'Marcos' commandos with support from the helicopter onboard the ship, carried out a 'board and search' operation on two dhows and five skiffs which had shown "malicious intent".
Three skiffs fled the area at high speeds on sighting the Indian warship.
"The ship received a distress call from MV Lord Mountbatten, in position 230 nm South-West in the Gulf of Aden.
"The vessel had reported an incident of attempted piracy by two suspicious mother vessels along with 7-8 skiffs. Sharda, which was at that time 30 Nm East of the reported position, immediately responded to the distress call and proceeded at best speed to investigate the incident," Navy Spokesperson Capt DK Sharma said.
One automatic Kalashnikov rifle and 28 rounds of magazines were also recovered from one of the dhows, he said.

18:42   WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning released from jail
Chelsea Manning, the transgender army intelligence analyst behind one of the largest classified information leaks in US history, was on Wednesday released from military prison, a US Army spokeswoman said.

Manning has been released from the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said in a brief statement.

In July 2010, Manning -- then a male soldier known as Bradley -- was arrested over the release of a huge trove of more than 700,000 classified military and diplomatic documents via WikiLeaks.
Manning, now 29, was serving a 35-year sentence for the leak but president Barack Obama commuted her sentence before leaving office and she was released after seven years in prison.

Amnesty International, which had campaigned for Manning's release, was quick to applaud the decision.

"While we celebrate her freedom, we will continue to call for an independent investigation into the potential human rights violations she exposed, and for protections to be put in place to ensure whistleblowers like Chelsea are never again subjected to such appalling treatment," a statement said.

The two neighbours -- who last faced off at the ICJ 18 years ago when Islamabad sought its intervention over the shooting down of its naval aircraft -- India took the Jadhav case to the world court, accusing Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention and conducting a farcical trial for convicting Jadhav without a shred of evidence.

16:57   Secrets behind T rex's bone crushing bites unveiled
The giant Tyrannosaurus rex pulverised bones by biting down with forces equalling the weight of three small cars while simultaneously generating world record tooth pressures, according to a new study.

Researchers, including those from Florida State University in the US, said that T rex could pulverise bones - a capacity known as extreme osteophagy that is typically seen in living carnivorous mammals such as wolves and hyenas, but not reptiles whose teeth do not allow for chewing up bones.

They found that this prehistoric reptile could chow down with nearly 8,000 pounds of force, which is more than two times greater than the bite force of the largest living crocodiles. At the same time, their long, conical teeth generated an astounding 431,000 pounds per square inch of bone-failing tooth pressures.

This allowed T rex to drive open cracks in bone during repetitive, mammal-like biting and produce high-pressure fracture arcades, leading to a catastrophic explosion of some bones.

"It was this bone-crunching acumen that helped T rex to more fully exploit the carcasses of large horned-dinosaurs and duck-billed hadrosaurids whose bones, rich in mineral salts and marrow, were unavailable to smaller, less equipped carnivorous dinosaurs," said Paul Gignac, assistant professor at Oklahoma State University in the US.

Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd, which owns the Times Now news channel, filed a criminal complaint against senior journalists Arnab Goswami and Prema Sridevi -- former Times Now employees who now work at Goswami's newly-launched venture Republic TV -- for 'theft, criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and infringement of intellectual property rights'.

In its complaint to the senior police inspector, Azad Maidan police station, Mumbai, Bennett Coleman has stated that the 'exposes' on Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Yadav, which Goswami aired on his Republic TV, 'displayed material (in the form of audio tapes and phone conversations) that was procured and accessed while Mr Goswami and Ms Prema were in the employment of Times Now.'

The company confirmed filing the complaint and said in a release that it has been accepted by the Mumbai police and the matter is under investigation.

'In fact, Mr Arnab Goswami and Ms. Prema Sridevi have on Republic TV admitted and claimed that the audio conversation in the Sunanda Pushkar case aired on 8th May 2017 was in their possession for the last two years when they were in their previous organisation, ie, with Times Now,' the channel said in the release.

It further said, 'Mr Goswami and Ms Sridevi have wilfully, deliberately and with knowledge converted for their benefit and used the aforesaid intellectual property of Times Now and thereby dishonestly misappropriated the said intellectual property, thereby  committing the offence of criminal misappropriation of property punishable U/Sec.403 of IPC and several other provisions under applicable laws.'

15:21   Hansal Mehta slammed over silence on 'Simran' credits
Writer-lyricist Varun Grover has slammed Hansal Mehta for his silence over the credit controversy surrounding "Simran", saying a filmmaker risks to lose respect when he does not stand by the ideals he endorses through his films.

The "Masaan" writer took to Twitter to express his disappointment in the director. "Making films about oppressed people while oppressing the writer, the lowest in creative world hierarchy - you lose all respect Hansal saab," wrote Varun.

Taking a pot-shot at Kangana, the writer modified a popular dialogue from the 2014 film "Queen". "'Mera sense of stealing credit bahut achha hai. Aapko dheere dheere pata chalega. (My sense of stealing credit is great. You will get to know about it slowly)' - Queen," Varun wrote.

The can of worms opened after the release of the first poster of the movie recently where Kangana was credited as the 'additional story and dialogue writer' ahead of Apurva's 'story, screenplay and dialogue'.

Apurva took to Facebook where he debunked actress Kangana's claim of converting the movie from "one line screenplay to a full-fledged story". He slammed his frequent collaborator Hansal, with whom he has worked on critically-acclaimed films like "Citylights" and "Aligarh" for assigning credit to Kangana for writing the entire story of the film. He concluded the post, "I also wish that my dear friend Hansal shows some spine and either refutes or endorses my story."

13:52   Win-win for both If Lalu gets Maya to Rajya Sabha
Speculation is rife in political circles that BSP supremo Mayawati is likely to be sent to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar with the support of the RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The move will shore up efforts to form a united opposition of non-BJP parties ahead of the 2019 general elections. With Lalu's RJD, the largest party in the Bihar Assembly, followed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD-U, Mayawati will be a showcase of non-BJP opposition unity. "Mayawati has approached Lalu through a reliable man known to both to give her a Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar. Lalu has also agreed to help her,' a RJD leader close to Lalu said in Patna.

Mayawati is fully aware that after her humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, she has neither the numbers with her, nor any support, to win another term in the Rajya Sabha. Her term will end soon.

If Lalu does not help her, Mayawati will not be elected a member of the Rajya Sabha. According to RJD leaders, Lalu will send a strong political message by helping Mayawati, a Dalit leader, to the Rajya Sabha. ' Lalu will not miss this opportunity use the Mayawati case as an example of a united Opposition and help tap the Dalit vote bank,' said a source.

If Mayawati does get a RS seat from Bihar, she will join an eminent list of parliamentarians like veteran socialist J B Kriplani, Madhu Limaye, George Fernandes, Sharad Yadav, all outsiders ,who were elected to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from Bihar.

10:50   Mamata marches ahead in civic polls, BJP limps
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is leading in all seven municipal corporations where elections were held on Sunday in West Bengal, looking set to make major inroads in the four civic bodies in the hills of Darjeeling, a stronghold for years of BJP ally the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), reports NDTV.

While the Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong corporations were held by the GJM, Mirik is a new municipality. In Raiganj and Domkal in the plains, traditionally Congress strongholds, too the Trinamool is forging ahead.

Opposition parties have demanded fresh elections in all these three municipalities after they withdrew their candidates from many seats on Sunday, polling day, because of violence and booth capturing, which they blame on the ruling party.

Left leader Sitaram Yechury called it a "mockery of democracy and blatant misuse of state machinery" while the Congress has gone to court seeking that the elections be cancelled. A Kolkata court will hear its petition this morning.

The Trinamool Congress has rejected the allegations and blamed the BJP for the violence, which saw clashes between political workers, electronic voting machines or EVMs damaged in several wards and policeman injured.
