22:05   Trump urges college students to stand up to criticism
Delivering his first commencement address, President Donald Trump today urged graduates of a Christian university to follow their convictions but to also be willing to stand up to criticism from others who don't have the courage to do what is right.

Trump kept to an upbeat message in his first extended public appearance since firing James Comey as FBI director this week.

Drawing parallels to what was widely viewed as a longshot bid by Trump for the presidency, he urged the more than 18,000 graduates to fight for what they believe in and to "challenge entrenched interests and failed power structures."

"Remember this: Nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever came easy," Trump said. "Following your convictions means you must be willing to face criticism from those who lack the same courage to do what is right, and they know what is right but they don't have the courage or the guts or the stamina to take it and to do it."

Trump told graduates to "treat the word 'impossible' as nothing more than motivation" and to embrace being called an "outsider" because "It's the outsiders who change the world."

18:10   Michelle Obama criticises Trump administration's school lunch policy
Former US first lady Michelle Obama expressed concern over the Trump administration's decision to scale back school meal nutritional requirements.

"You have to stop and think, 'Why don't you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you, and why is that a partisan issue?" Obama said at the annual summit of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a nonprofit that works with the private and public sectors to fight childhood obesity. "Why would that be political?"

Obama -- who did not mention US President Donald Trump or first lady Melania Trump by name -- emphasized that it's important to make sure parents think about the importance of healthy school lunches.

"Moms, think about this," she said. "I don't care what state you live in. Take me out of the equation; like me, don't like me, but think about why someone is OK with your kids eating crap."

Obama said she will continue to fight for the cause.

14:27   Jadhav case: Islamabad feels it's 'at a disadvantage', says Pak official
Pakistan is likely to tell the International Court of Justice that it has no jurisdiction over the case of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav whom its military court has put on death row, say Pakistani media reports.

Islamabad also feels it's "clearly at a disadvantage" in the case because the ICJ has scheduled hearings in the case as early as starting May 15.

Pakistan is "clearly at a disadvantage because of the paucity of time, logistical support and finding legal expertise", a senior government official told The Express Tribune.

An expert on international law told Dawn newspaper that Pakistan could raise the issue of jurisdiction by citing a case to do with India shooting down a Pakistani navy plane in 1999.

Pakistan took the case to the ICJ. India said the ICJ has no jurisdiction to hear cases related to disputes between Commonwealth countries. India cited an exemption it filed in 1974 to exclude such disputes. A year later, a 16-judge ICJ bench agreed it has no jurisdiction.

12:55   India to skip China's Belt and Road Forum
India will skip China's high-profile Belt and Road summit beginning on Sunday in view of sovereignty concerns related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a flagship project of the initiative that is expected to play a dominant role in the two-day meet.

While there is no official word, informed sources said that India will not take part in the meet, contrary to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's announcement that India will have a representative at the Belt and Road Forum, a prestigious initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"Although Indian leader is not here, India will have a representative," Wang had told journalists here on April 17 without specifying who would be representing India.

It was a tough call for India to take as China in the last few days has managed to rope in a number of western countries, including the US which yesterday agreed to send a top official after Washington clinched a lucrative trade deal.

Playing down India's absence at the meeting, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told the media yesterday that the Indian scholars would be attending the meeting.

The May 14-15 summit, which is expected to strengthen Xi's power base will be attended by 29 heads of state and government, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A number of other countries, including South Korea, France, Germany and UK, have deputed either ministerial or official delegations.

India's decision to skip the meeting came after a year of bilateral discord over China's stubborn opposition to India's entry into the NSG and a UN ban against Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad leader Masood Azhar.

In the last few days, China has tried to assuage India's feelings by asserting that the commercial corridor will not have any impact on its stand that the Kashmir issue should be settled by India and Pakistan through dialogue.

Pakistan has devised their strategy on how they are going to plead their point of view in the public hearing on Monday before the International Court of Justice over the conviction of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

After hectic consultations for two days with the Foreign Office and law ministry officials, Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf has sent a set of recommendations to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif .

There are reports that Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf is expected to lead the Pakistan side before the ICJ but he indicated that they may hire someone from abroad, the best minds on international law to advance Pakistan's standpoint.

"We have sent our recommendations to the Prime Minister's Office and the Foreign Office," Dawn quoted Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf as saying.

Stressing on the need to keep the suggestions, arguments and options confidential so that the other side might not know the strategy being devised, the attorney general said a robust reply would be advanced by Pakistan in a forceful manner, refuting all allegations leveled against it and also pointing out atrocities India was getting away with committing in Kashmir.

12:06   'Invisible' laser walls to bolster security along border with Pak in J-K
The Border Security Force is all set to get more teeth to man the 198 km India-Pakistan international border using a newly developed technology that can detect intrusions and relay information immediately to the nearest post for action.

Developed by Delhi-based defence IoT firm, CRON Systems, the made-in-India technology is called Kavach series laser walls and is a notch higher than the existing laser walls.

Laser walls, because of their beams, were visible. And the terrain and alignments (in the region) were a problem. We were looking for a wall that is invisible on the ground, cannot be felt, and is more effective, said Rakesh Sharma, former inspector general of BSFs Jammu Frontier.

CRON Systems have come up with this intrusion detection system based on infrared array, which is invisible. It is more advanced than laser walls, he said, adding that it can be used along the Jammu border with Pakistan which has 13 rivers and rivulets, besides unfenced marshy lands.

Kavach walls can also work in transparent water and glass, he said.

Tamil actor and superstar Rajinikanth has received a legal notice from Sundar Shaekhar, who claims to be the son of underworld don Haji Mastan Mirza.

In the legal notice, Sundar has asked Rajinikanth not to depict Haji Mastan as a 'smuggler and an underworld don'.

There has been speculation that Rajinikanth will play the role of the don in his next film with Pa Ranjith.

'I further state that you are depicting my godfather and a well-known national political leader as a 'smuggler and underworld don', which is highly unacceptable and I strongly oppose such misrepresentation of my godfather,' reads the notice.

It added, 'There is a huge political party behind him and all party workers are in a state of anger on such misrepresentation of him as a smuggler or underworld don and if any such attempt is made by you to produce any such film, then I shall be constrained to adopt legal proceedings and it is needless to say that the same shall be entirely at your risks as to costs and consequences, which please note.'

09:29   HC asks UP govt to issue new licences for slaughter houses
The Allahabad high court has said it is an obligation of the Uttar Pradesh government to establish and run modernised slaughter houses in the state and directed authorities to issue new licenses as per rules.

Considering that licences for meat shops and slaughter houses can be granted under the Food Safety Act 2006, the Lucknow bench of the high court in its interim order asked the applicants of licences to apply accordingly.

In case the local authorities find any difficulty in doing so, they can approach the state government for proper guidance, it said.

The court also directed a high powered committee to consider the aspects set forth in the verdict and formulate the policy in the matter of slaughtering and licensing to meat shops.

A bench of justices A P Sahi and Sanjai Harkauli passed the directives on a bunch of writ petitions filed individually. The petitioners had demanded that their meat shop licences which had expired on March 31 be renewed. They had pleaded that the state in fact wanted to close down slaughter houses and therefore it issued an order on March 22.

The petitioners submitted that the state's act has forced the closure of meat business which was their constitutional right. The act of the state indirectly put unreasonable restriction on taste of food of a citizen which cannot be permitted.

Citing an apex court guideline, it was also pointed out that in compliance whereof the central and state governments had released funds for establishment of modern abattoirs but the present government was lagging behind in the steps.

08:55   White House opens theatre to public after Melania calls for it
The White House has for the first time opened its movie theatre for the general public after US First Lady Melania Trump called for it.

The theatre was opened as part of the White House's self-guided tours in the East Wing.

"The White House belongs to the people of this country. I believe everyone who takes the time to visit and tour the White House should have as much access to its rich history and wonderful traditions as possible. It is my hope that our visitors truly enjoy the newest piece of the tour," said Melania.

In July 1942, the East Terrace cloakroom was converted into a movie theatre under the direction of the then president Franklin D Roosevelt. In 1982-1983, during the Reagan administration, a major remodelling introduced 51 seats in tiered rows. The most recent refurbishment in 2004-2005 was inspired by theatre interiors of the early 20th century.

To commemorate the theatre's opening to the public, the White House Visitors Office passed out White House candy to children and spoke with some of the visitors.

"The history of this is all so exciting. To think that so many presidents and their families have watched movies or entertained guests in this room, and to be one of the first to see it is just amazing," said Ginna Felts from Nashville, Tennessee.

"We're witnessing history!" exclaimed Dan White, visiting from Denver, Colorado, who was especially excited by the movie theatre.

08:49   ISPs told to block child abuse sites by July 31
The Centre has asked all internet service providers to prevent the distribution and transmission of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) into the country by adopting and implementing Internet Watch Foundation resources by July 31.

The ministry of women and child development has issued an interim order to curb all online child sexual abuse material.

Under this order, the ISPs shall be required to adopt and implement the IWF resources by July 31.

The IWF maintains a dynamic global list of websites and URLs which contain CSAM. Implementation of IWF resources will result in the relevant content being blocked/removed on an ongoing basis.

It is an interim measure till a centralised mechanism is put in place to monitor online CSAM. The order also states that all ISPs having international long distance licences in India shall be required to adopt and implement the IWF resources on or before July 31 to prevent the distribution and transmission of online CSAM into India.

This step was taken as most of the CSAM was being hosted outside India and the websites and URLs to access such unlawful content are dynamic in nature and frequently changing, making it difficult to block such content.

As of now, in India, there is no centralised mechanism to monitor online child sexual abuse material.

08:10   Man does a 'Darr' in real life, tries to kill husband of girl he stalked
A man allegedly tried to kill the husband of a woman he used to stalk and when arrested told the police that he was inspired by Shah Rukh Khan's act in Bollywood movie Darr

After Vivek Kumar Aggarwal (37) got to know that the police have launched a manhunt for him, he allegedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills and was admitted in a hospital. However, he was arrested on Thursday, the police said.

Vivek had first come into contact with the woman in 2012 (she was then unmarried) when she used to work at a real estate firm in Kirti Nagar. He was working as a real estate agent nearby. He fell in love with her and wanted to marry her, the police said adding that he initially started following her without her knowledge.

He managed to get her number from the firm she worked for and started messaging and calling her. Initially, she didn't pay heed but once he sent her something suggestive she blocked him, they added. However, he kept pursuing her.

In December, the woman got married and this hurt Vivek, who decided to kill her husband, the police said. Vivek allegedly tried to kill her husband in February by shooting him, but he escaped unhurt. He didn't file a police complaint then.

On April 20, the accused again attacked the husband near his house in Vijay Vihar, the police said. A case was filed then and a team led by Abhinendra, SHO of Vijay Vihar police station, began probing the case.

During investigations, it emerged that the accused had taken pains each time to ensure that the woman wasn't injured in any way. The police said he had a "soft corner" for her.

In order to throw the police off-track, Vivek even posted a letter to the woman's house claiming to be the sister of a woman who had committed suicide after the husband had impregnated her, the police said.

Vivek soon changed his residence and even consumed sleeping pills in an alleged suicide attempt, but the law soon caught up with him. The police managed to zero down on Vivek, who was arrested after being discharged from hospital following his alleged suicide attempt on Thursday.

He told the police that he was a fan of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and has seen the film Darr, in which the actor plays a compulsive stalker, several times. The actor's obsessive lover act was the inspiration for him to hatch a plan to kill the woman's husband, he said.

00:07   Trump threatens to cancel media briefings to ensure 'accuracy'
United States President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to cancel the White House press briefings and instead issue written responses to questions 'for accuracy', escalating his tiff with the media that has questioned the administration's shifting stance on the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief's firing.

Describing himself as a 'very active president', Trump said it was becoming very difficult for his surrogates to explain things with perfect accuracy to reporters at the news conferences.

'...Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future 'press briefings' and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???' Trump said in a series of tweets.

His latest attack on the media came after his administration's shifting narrative on the firing of James Comey as FBI chief was questioned by the media.

The president's advisers said this week that Trump fired Comey in response to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
