23:36   Naxals attack security force's mine protected vehicle in Maharashtra
In a series of events instigated by the Maoists near Gadchiroli's Bhamragarh district in Maharashtra, 14 personnel from the Maharashtra Police and one Central Reserve Police Force official were injured on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, a brief encounter between Maoists and the security personal resulted in one 37 Bn CRPF and two personnel of the Maharshtra Police being injured, who were later airlifted to Raipur.

Subsequently, troops of C60, the anti-naxal wing of the Maharashtra Police were sent as reinforcement. Out of this, 12 of them were reportedly caught in a landmine blast in the region, which was also planted by the Maoists.

23:09   Sasikala files review petition in SC against her conviction
Former All India Anna Dravida Munneta Kazhagam general secretary V.K. Sasikala has filed a review petition against her conviction in the Supreme Court.

Sasikala had suffered a major jolt with the apex court upholding the trial court's judgment convicting her in the 21-year-old disproportionate assets case against her. With this, Sasikala stood disqualified to take over as Tamil Nadu chief minister after late J Jayalalithaa's demise.

The Karnataka government had challenged the state high court verdict acquitting Jayalalithaa, Sasikala and her two relatives - VN Sudhakaran and Elavarasi - for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during her first term as the chief minister from 1991 to 1996.

This development comes amid an enraging power struggle between the two warring factions of the AIADMK - one led by former chief minister O Panneerselvam and current Chief Minister E Palaniswamy

22:43   Uddhav urges PM to 'tear Pakistan into pieces'
In a dig at its ally, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today said BJP should work on strengthening the nation and not just their party, while urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "tear Pakistan into pieces."

"The BJP should concentrate on strengthening the country and the state rather than only strengthening the party. We are ready for mid term polls. In UP there is 'Yogi' Sarkar (government), but here (in Maharashtra) there is a 'NirupaYogi' (useless) Sarkar," he said while addressing a gathering of party workers.

"Enter Pakistan and tear them into pieces. The Shiv Sena will stand behind Prime Minister Modi," Thackeray said.

22:18   AAP a 'sinking ship', says Yogendra Yadav
Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav today described the Aam Aadmi Party as a "sinking ship", and said there was a "naked power struggle" taking place in the Arvind Kerjiwal-led party.

In an apparent reference to his and his colleague Prashant Bhusan's expulsion from AAP in 2015, Yadav said there was a "fundamental difference" between what happened then and now.

"My sense is that there is fundamental difference between what happened two years ago and what is happening now. There was a break-up more than two years ago but that was about principles; today it is about power. It is a naked power struggle," he said.

21:59   Book claims Barack had proposed another woman before Michelle
Their inspiring marriage may have been #relationshipgoals, but a new book claims he actually proposed to a different woman - twice - before he met Michelle and kept on seeing her for the first year of his relationship with FLOTUS.

Sheila Miyoshi Jager was almost entirely omitted from Obama's own biography, Dreams of My Father, where she was simply combined with his other exes into one character.

But according to Rising Star, by David J Garrow, Jager played a huge role in Obama's formative years. So much so that even after Barack met his wife-to-be Michelle, he kept seeing Jager on and off for at least a year, the book claims.

The couple were very much in love in the mid 1980s when they were living together in Chicago, according to Jager, who described them as being 'an island unto ourselves.'

Their relationship quickly progressed and in the winter of 1986, while visiting his girlfriend's parents, Barack popped the question, Jager she told Garrow.

But Jager's parents were concerned that she was too young - Jager was 23 and Obama was 25 - and refused his advances.

21:37   Rights activists demand arrest of those involved in Pehlu Khan's lynching
Rights activists today demonstrated against the lynching of Pehlu Khan over alleged smuggling of cows in Alwar's Behror last month and demanded arrest of the remaining accused in his killing.

The activists staged demonstration at the Ambedkar circle and forwarded a representation addressed to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, urging justice for Khan and his family.

Nisha Siddhu of National Federation of Indian Women said Khan and others were badly assaulted by cow vigilantes which led to his death in Alwar.

She claimed that while Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria "glorified" the cow vigilantes, a ruling party MLA gave a "misleading" statement over the cause of Khan's death. She said the government should ensure that all the accused involved in the case are arrested.

Khan, who hailed from Haryana, was attacked by cow vigilantes in Behror when he, along with others, including his two sons, was allegedly transporting cows illegally from Jaipur to Haryana. He died during treatment at hospital, while the others had suffered injuries in the incident.

21:22   No plans to mediate between India and Pakistan: China
Amid reports that China has a vested interest in mediating between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, the Chinese government today clarified that their stance has not changed over the years.

China has denied that they have plans of mediating between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue due to its investments in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

China's clarification came a day after an article in the Global Times said that Beijing now has a "vested interest" in mediating between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue because of its hefty investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that passes through PoK.

The article yesterday sparked concerns about a shift in China's stand on the Kashmir issue as India is averse to any third-party mediation.

20:50   FBI chief defends 'right choice' on handling Clinton email probe
FBI Director James Comey strongly defended Wednesday his decision to alert Congress just days before the 2016 election about his agency's investigation into emails potentially related to Hillary Clinton's personal server, telling senators while the idea of impacting the election made him "mildly nauseous," he would not change what he did.

"It was a hard choice, I still believe in retrospect the right choice," Comey told senators at a judiciary committee hearing on oversight of his agency. "I can't consider for a second whose political fortunes will be affected."

Comey is testifying the day after both the sitting US President and the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee sharply criticised him for his role in the outcome of last year's presidential election.

Comey has become an almost equally divisive figure for Republicans and Democrats for his impact on the 2016 elections. His revelation that the FBI was examining additional emails from Hillary Clinton that were discovered on disgraced former Rep. Anthony Weiner's computer, has led Democrats -- including Clinton herself -- to say it cost them the White House.

In the wake of his suspension by the Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi legislator Amanatullah Khan said he was unaware of the reason behind it.

Khan said it was the party's decision and only they would be able to disclose the reasons.

Lashing out at Kumar Vishwas' claims of Khan being backed by someone else, he said it was better to put the question to Vishwas himself, given the fact that 'he knows who the person is'.

"Let Kumar Vishwas disclose who this person behind me is, since I'm sure he or his close associates would know the person," asserted Khan.

18:33   Amid tensions, India sends back 50 Pakistani students
Around 50 Pakistani students, visiting India at the invitation of an NGO, were sent back today after the government advised it against hosting them at a time which was not "appropriate" in the aftermath of beheading of two Indian soldiers.

"An NGO had invited Pakistani school students here. They came to India on the same day when the barbaric and inhuman act of killing and mutilating our soldiers happened.

"The ministry advised the NGO that it was not an appropriate time for such exchanges after we learnt that the children had crossed over to India on May 1," Gopal Baglay, a spokesperson of the ministry of external affairs, said.

Routes2Roots, a Delhi-based NGO, had invited 50 students from Pakistan as part of their Student 'Exchange for Change' Program.

The students from Pakistan were scheduled to go on a day-long trip to Agra today and participate in an exchange of experiences with Indian students tomorrow at the Pakistan Embassy.

Expressing regret over the return of the delegation, Routes2Roots said that the trip had to be shortened and the students and teachers have been sent back to Lahore.

"Around 50 students aged between 11-15 years along with their teachers arrived in Delhi from Pakistan on May 1 and were supposed to meet their Indian pen friends and hosts of other programs which had to be cut short.

"Keeping in view the security and sentiments of fellow Indians the delegation has been sent back to Lahore safely," Rakesh Gupta and Tina Vachani, founders of Routes2Roots, said in a statement.

18:15   BJP MLC posts porn pics in WhatsApp group, apologises later
A BJP MLC from Karnataka allegedly posted pornographic photographs on a WhatsApp group meant to share information between government officers and the media.

Mahantesh Kavatagimath, however, apologised for posting porn pictures on the WhatsApp group of 'Belagavi Media Force', saying it was an "unintentional act".

"The content was posted accidentally when my phone hanged while switching off, I guess. At that time I was travelling by flight. I apologise for the incident, it was not intentional," he told reporters.

"Why would I share porn in a group with senior politicians, government officials and journalists?" he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, however, refused to comment on the incident saying, "I am not aware of it."

To a query, Kavatagimath said there will be no political fallout because of this incident, as he had already apologised.

17:19   Rs 5 lakh bounty on terrorist who killed seven in J-K cash van massacre
JK Police identifies the terrorist behind the Kulgam incident on May 1 in which seven people including five cops were killed. A Rs 5 lakh reward has also been announced.

Terrorists today shot dead seven people, including five policemen, after dragging them out of a vehicle carrying cash of a bank in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

The cash van of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, which was returning to Kulgam district headquarters from Damhal Hanji Pora, was waylaid by a group of heavily-armed terrorists, a police official said. He said the terrorists pulled out the five police personnel and two bank employees from the vehicle and shot them from point blank range.

While four cops and two bank employees -- including a bank security guard -- died on the spot, the fifth cop succumbed to injuries at a hospital, the official said. Among the deceased is an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police. The militants have reportedly decamped with four service rifles of the slain cops but the police official said these reports were being verified.

The police is also investigating whether the militants had taken away any cash.

Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesperson of the Hizb told a local news gathering agency that its cadres had decamped with four weapons from the scene of the attack.

The four armed militants entered the Wahibugh branch of the Elaquai Dehati Bank at around 1.50 pm and fled after looting the money at gunpoint, a police official said.

He said the bank employees informed the police and a case has been registered.

A police party rushed to the scene and a hunt was launched to arrest the culprits and recover the stolen money, the official said.

Yesterday, unidentified gunmen barged into the Yaripora branch of the same bank and took away Rs 65,000.

On May 1, militants attacked a cash van of Jammu and Kashmir bank and shot dead five policemen and two bank security guards in Damhal Hanji Pora area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir.

15:13   As Kashmir boils Rajnath holds 3rd security meeting in 3 days
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday reviewed the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day today.

All top security officials including National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Director Intelligence Bureau (DIB) Rajiv Jain, and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief Anil Dhasmana were present in the high level meeting at North Block in Delhi.

The meetings come in the backdrop of recent violent attacks in the Valley, leading to the deaths of armed forces personnel and creating utter chaos in the state.

Earlier on Monday, Rajnath had reviewed the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the recent Sukma attack with country's top security officials.

On Monday, two defence personnel were killed, as Pakistan violated ceasefire by opening fire on Border Security Force (BSF) posts in Jammu and Kashmir's Krishna Ghati sector. In a barbaric act, their bodies were later mutilated by the Pakistan Army.

Earlier yesterday, Union Home Minister expressed his displeasure over 'prolonged' unrest in the valley in his meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra. During the meet with Vohra, Rajnath Singh also discussed the grievous attack by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir's Krishna Ghati sector, where the bodies of two Indian soldiers were mutilated.

The Kashmir Valley has been embroiled in utter chaos and violence after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's was killed by security forces in an encounter in south Kashmir's Kokernag on 8 July last year.

13:41   Blood trail shows killers returned across LoC: India summons Pak envoy
An "outraged" India today summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and demanded action against Pakistani soldiers and commanders responsible for the beheading of two of its security force personnel in Jammu and Kashmir.

Basit was summoned by Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to convey India's "outrage at the killing and the barbaric act of mutilation of the bodies of two Indian soldiers on May one, 2017 by Pakistani army personnel," an external affairs ministry statement said.

"It was significant that the attack was preceded by covering fire from Pakistani posts in Battal sector (in vicinity of village Battal). Blood samples of the Indian soldiers that have been collected and the trail of blood on Roza Nala clearly shows that the killers returned across the Line of Control," it said.

Naib Subedar Paramjeet Singh and BSF Head Constable Prem Singh were slain by Pakistan Border Action Team (BAT) after sneaking 250 metres into Indian territory in Poonch of J&K on May 1.

Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen A K Bhatt had yesterday conveyed to his Pakistan counterpart that such a "dastardly and inhuman act" was beyond any norms of civility and merits unequivocal condemnation and response.

12:31   BJP workers Amit Shah lunched with in Naxalbari join TMC
In a major embarrassment for the BJP, two party workers with whom party President Amit Shah had his much publicised lunch last week at Naxalbari, have joined the Trinamool Congress.

Raju Mahali and his wife Geeta joined the TMC in the presence of West Bengal Tourism Minister Goutam Deb in Siliguri.

A red-faced BJP claimed that the two BJP workers were abducted and forcibly made to join the Trinamool Congress.

The images of Shah sitting cross-legged on the floor of Mahalis house at South Katiajote village eating rice, dal, potol bhaja (fried gourd) squash curry, salad and papad served on a banana leaf went viral.

Addressing party workers on April 25, Shah said, "I may have addressed several rallies across the country, but let me tell you nothing is more satisfying than today's meeting in this tiny village in Bengal".

A week later, the couple, residents of South Kotiajote in Naxalbari police station area, joined the Trinamool Congress.

11:37   Sena's Save Our Soldiers message to Modi: Move on from UP victory
The Shiv Sena on Wednesday continued its assault on the Centre over the mutilation of Indian soldiers by the Pakistani Army, putting onus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reveal how serious he is about tackling the matter on an international level.

"The Prime Minster should disclose as to how many countries are supporting us on this issue. Former defence minister Manohar Parrikar's previous remark on such issues and his resignation from his post indicates how serious the government is to tackle this issue," said the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana.

The editorial further slammed present Defence Minister Arun Jaitley saying that just by making fancy statements the problem is not going to end, and it is high time to take serious action on the same.

"This is the same party ruling in the Centre who declared during the Congress regime to behead 10 Pakistanis if they behead one of ours. The regime has changed, but no change can be witnessed in the barbaric condition of our soldiers," it said.

It further said that the surgical strike carried out along the Line of Control (LoC) was not enough to respond to Pakistan's attack on Uri, Machil and Pathankot, adding that the BJP may consider the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election victory as one their greatest achievements, but the loss of the lives of Indian soldiers is the greatest defeat of the country.

Expressing grave concern over the brutal incident, Indian Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt. Gen. A.K. Bhatt on Tuesday raised the issue of Border Action Team (BAT) camps near the Line of control with his Pakistani counterpart.Bhatt also raised the issue of fire support provided by the Pakistani posts.

11:23   Kumar Vishwas reaches Kejriwal's residence for PAC meet
Dr Kumar Vishwas reaches AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal's residence to attend the Public Action Committee meet. Amid the ongoing tussle between the senior leaders of Aam Aadmi Party, a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee has been called today at 11 am to discuss the issue.

The crisis in the Aam Aadmi Party deepened on Tuesday after senior leader Kumar Vishwas indicated he could quit the party, alleging conspiracies were being hatched against him.

Vishwas also appeared defiant despite the partys gag order of not talking to the media and said he will keep highlighting the mistakes of the Aam Aadmi Party and say what is right in the interest of the country.

Amid murmurs that he wants to head the party, the poet-turned-politician said he harbours no ambitions to become chief minister, deputy chief minister or AAP national convener.

Several MLAs too are in favour of a greater role for Vishwas in the AAP after the partys poor show in the Punjab assembly and municipal corporation of Delhi polls.

I have conveyed this to Arvind, Manish (Sisodia) and I reiterate it today that I dont want to become chief minister, deputy chief minister or AAPs national convener.

I dont want to join any political party or Swaraj India (political party founded by expelled AAP leader Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan).

I dont know what you want to do, but I dont want to do this, Vishwas told reporters outside his Ghaziabad residence, as he turned emotional.

The AAP leader was particularly upset with Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan who on Sunday had alleged that Vishwas was plotting a coup against party chief and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and that he was an RSS-BJP agent.

He said Khan was merely a mask behind those hatching conspiracies against him.

Had Amanatullah Khan said anything like this against Arvind or Manish, he would have been shown the door in 10 minutes, Vishwas said.

Reacting to this, Deputy chief minister and senior AAP leader Sisodia said Vishwas comments are only hurting the party and affecting morale.

He doesnt talk in the PAC. He should put forth his views in the PAC, Sisodia said.

Earlier, Vishwas had differed with Kejriwal on the issue of electronic voting machines. He had refused to attribute the AAPs recent poll losses to alleged manipulation of EVMs and had instead stressed on the need to introspect.

Earlier in the day, several AAP MLAs, including Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra met Vishwas, seeking to pacify him.

However, it appeared to have yielded no results. Vishwas also remained adamant on Khan being sacked from the party.

Khan had resigned from the partys Political Affairs Committee on Monday.

11:01   Why James Bond's executioners are unable to finish him off
Many of us have probably wondered occasionally, and some of us frequently, why the villains in James Bond movies don't kill him when they can. They brag, prevaricate, and defer. They inform Bond what a nuisance he is to their plans and how much they're going to enjoy finishing him off and living in a world without Bond. While they're transported by their oratory, Bond extricates himself from the corner he's painted himself into. The world in which there's no Bond hasn't come into existence. We have to ascribe this to the garrulity of his antagonists. We can also ascribe it to Bond's powers as a listener (indispensable, one hears, to the seducer) and his facility for repartee. One of the reasons that the villain keeps talking is because he's determined to out-repartee Bond (a Herculean task). More than Q's factory-line innovations, it's words that give Bond his longevity.

10:42   After midnight meet, AAP to decide on Kumar Vishwas today
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's late night meeting with senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, who has threatened to quit over the attacks on him by a "coterie" surrounding the AAP convener, appears to have yielded little result.

At yesterday's meeting, Vishwas insisted that stern action be taken against Okhla MLA Amantullah Khan, who had accused him of being a "RSS-BJP' agent and plotting a coup in the party, sources said. A section of AAP MLAs also held a separate meeting with Vishwas early today but details were not immediately available.

Khan had on Monday resigned from the party's Political Affairs Committee (PAC).

Vishwas had accused Khan of being a "mask' and acting at the behest of a "coterie' surrounding Kejriwal. After the emotional outburst, Vishwas had threatened to quit the party.

The chief minister and deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had visited Vishwas's Ghaziabad residence late in the night to pacify him.

The three, along with party leaders Sanjay Singh and Ashutosh, then went to Kejriwal's residence. The meeting continued until late in the night. The PAC is also likely to meet today to discuss the issue

00:31   Clinton blames misogyny, FBI, Russia, herself for 2016 loss
Hillary Clinton says she is taking responsibility for her 2016 election loss but believes misogyny, Russian interference and questionable decisions by the FBI also played roles.

The former Democratic presidential nominee reflected on the presidential contest during the Women for Women International's annual luncheon in New York.

Clinton said she was "on the way to winning" until a combination of events in the final days. She cited the FBI director's letter to Congress resurrecting questions about her email practices and WikiLeaks' repeated release of her campaign's internal emails that "scared off" people.

She also said misogyny "played a role in this election," won by Republican Donald Trump.

She conceded she made mistakes but said, "The reason I believe we lost were the intervening events in the last 10 days."

00:01   British royals seek 1.5 mn euros in damages over topless Kate pics
Britain's royals are seeking 1.5 million euros (Rs 10.5 crore) in damages over the publication of topless photographs of Prince William's wife Kate, on the opening day of the trial of six media representatives for invasion of privacy.

French gossip magazine Closer and regional newspaper La Provence in September 2012 published long-lens photos of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless in the south of France, triggering outrage in Britain.

The prosecution in the invasion of privacy trial called for "very significant fines" over the grainy pictures, while a lawyer for Closer said the royal couple wanted 1.5 million euros in damages.

The pair were snapped on a break at a chateau owned by Viscount David Linley, the son of Princess Margaret, the late sister of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

One of the most intimate shots, which were offered to some publications but not published in Britain, shows the Duchess of Cambridge topless.
