Hawai chappal and BMW car cant have the same tax rate: Jaitley on GST bill

The Lok Sabha took up Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill for discussion and passage today. 

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley debating the bill said A slipper (hawai chappal) and a BMW car cant have the same tax rate. Then it will be highly regressive."

All sin products or products, which have health hazards, are taxed at 40-50%. That is why we will have a cess on sin products in the GST regime, FM said. Cess will remain for the first five years. 

The UPA government did not provide for a compensation package when it framed the GST Constitution Bill. The moment NDA government announced a compensation package, states agreed to the GST.

Asked why the GST bills were introduced as money bills, the finance minister said that as it dealth with  taxation laws and it was introduced as money bills.

He also added, "Seven finance ministers of Congress-ruled states have supported GST, Jaitley tells Lok Sabha. Every political parties have not only supported (GST bills) but are also privy to it.
