Government snubbed Dhoni, Arnab Goswami for Padma awards?

The government rejected proposals to confer Padma awards to a clutch of prominent personalities, including cricketer MS Dhoni, journalist Arnab Goswami, controversial spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain the Indian Express reported.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar and veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who were awarded the countrys second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan, were not on the initial list of nomination, the newspaper said.

Officials said they were conferred the highest civilian award under the public affairs category, which falls under the governments discretion the list does not mention who nominated them.

Among the other nominees who didnt make it were Supreme Court judge, Justice Amitava Roy, who was part of the bench that convicted former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaas aide, V K Sasikala, in a disproportionate assets case, actor Manoj Bajpayee, actor and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan and filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra. 

In all, 89 persons were conferred the Padma awards in January, including seven Padma Vibhushan, seven Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri winners.
