London terror attacker identified as 52-year-old Khalid Masood

British police have identified the person responsible for the terror attack near Parliament as 52-year-old Khalid Masood.

Masood, who died in the attack, was not the subject of any current police investigations, but he had a range of previous convictions for assaults.

In a statement the police said that Masood was born in southeastern England and was most recently living in the West Midlands, in central England.

Police also said that "there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack."

His first conviction was in November 1983 for criminal damage and his last conviction was in December 2003 for possession of a knife.

He had not been convicted of any terrorism offences.
