After signing an executive order which temporarily halts entry to
the US for people from six Muslim-majority nations, the Trump government has received backlash, with some saying it is still a Muslim ban and a 'betrayal of our values.

"The only way to actually fix the Muslim ban is not to have a Muslim ban," said Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's immigrant rights project.

"Instead, President Trump has recommitted himself to religious discrimination, and he can expect continued disapproval from both the courts and the people."

The Trump administration has vigorously pushed back against the "Muslim ban" label, pointing out that millions of Muslims around the world are not affected by the executive order.

The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a Jewish group supporting refugees worldwide, has issued a statement condemning the new ban.

"There is nothing temporary about leaving innocent families stranded and at grave risk while their government-issued security clearances expire, or crippling Americas domestic refugee resettlement infrastructure while fixing a system that is not broken," HIAS president Mark Hetfield said.

"The American Jewish community, which owes its very existence to the American tradition of welcoming refugees, cannot accept this betrayal of our values. We will continue to fight all attempts to vilify refugees."
