23:36   TN Minister writes to Swaraj for release of fishermen and boats
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister D Jayakumar today requested External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to take steps for the release of Indian fishermen along with their boats from Sri Lankan authorities.

He said Sri Lanka's "policy" of abduction of Tamil Nadu fishermen and their boats and their non-release, indicated its "intolerant attitude" and scant respect for diplomatic efforts taken by the Centre.

He said the government of Tamil Nadu along with the Centre has progressed substantially in implementing various measures towards achieving a "permanent solution" over the apprehending of fishermen by the island nation.

"The scheme of diversification of trawl fishing from Palk Bay into deep sea fishing, construction of fishing harbour at Mookaiyur in Ramanathapuram district and banning of new registration of trawling boats in Palk Bay are some of the salient recent initiatives aimed at resolving this vexatious issue," Jayakumar said in his letter to Swaraj.

20:02   India of 2017 different from 1962: Jaitley on China's warning
The India of 2017 is different from what it was in 1962, Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley asserted today, hitting out at China for asking the Indian Army to learn from "historical lessons".

A day after China's oblique reference to the war the two countries had fought 55 years ago, the defence minister also said the current standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in the Sikkim sector was triggered by Beijing. Bhutan, he added, had made it clear that the land in question belonged to it.

"If they are trying to remind us, the situation in 1962 was different and India of 2017 is different," Jaitley said when asked about China's warning.

China had asked India to withdraw its troops from the Donglong area as a precondition for "meaningful dialogue" to settle the boundary issue. It warned that the Indian Army should learn "historical lessons".

"Bhutan government had issued a statement yesterday in which it  made it clear that the land in question belonged to Bhutan. It is located near India's land. There is an arrangement between India and Bhutan for giving security," Jaitley said.

The defence minister said the Bhutan government had made its stance clear and China was trying to alter the status quo in the area.

"I think after this the issue has become very clear," Jaitley said.

18:28   'Some hiccups expected': Former Economic Affairs Secretary on GST
With only a few hours to go for the launch of the Goods and Services Tax, former economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das said the government has prepared adequately for the roll-out.

"Over the last six to eight months, there have been a number of awareness and outreach programs for trades. The preparation has been quite adequate," Das said.

Asked to compare it with the government's announcement of demonetisation in November, he said, "The difference is that demonetisation affected almost every individual in the country, GST is something which affects directly about 70 lakh registered traders. So, the problems are far more less and it has been preceded by several months of preparation".

The Economic Affairs Secretary, who retired last month, was part of Finance minister Arun Jaitley's A Team not for only the budget, but he was also closely associated with the notes ban and the framing of the GST.

Admitting to some amount of teething troubles for the next few months, the former revenue secretary said, "When you look at the short-to-medium time span, things will iron out and all will be fine in a year's time".

Since the reform is so massive, there will be some traders who have legitimate concerns, he admitted. "But they don't need to worry. Their concerns will be addressed," he said.

18:02   GST Council meeting today ahead of midnight launch
The GST Council will meet on Friday at 7 pm at Vigyan Bhawan in central Delhi, ahead of the midnight launch of India's most ambitious tax reform since its independence in 1947.

Vigyan Bhawan is just minutes away from the Parliament, where the GST launch will take place in an hour-long program where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be present among others.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh who was invited to be a part of the function is likely to be absent as the Congress party has decided to boycott the program.

So, what is likely to happen at the GST Council meet ahead of the launch, is the big question.

Sources say it is just a pre-cursor to the main event, which will be followed by dinner at Vigyan Bhavan, after which the team will proceed to the Parliament. "Any tweaking is tax rates in the meeting is highly unlikely," one of the sources said. The Council meeting is expected to last for an hour.

17:24   Big hit for small investors, govt lowers interest on saving schemes
The government has lowered interest rate on small saving schemes like PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra and Sukanya Samriddhi by 0.1 per cent for the July- September quarter, a move that will prompt banks to lower deposit rates.

The rates have been lowered by 0.1 per cent across the board compared to the April-June quarter.

However, interest on savings deposits has been retained at 4 per cent annually.

Since April last year, interest rates of all small saving schemes have been recalibrated on a quarterly basis. A finance ministry notification said investments in the public provident fund scheme will fetch lower annual rate of 7.8 per cent.

Kisan Vikas Patra investments will yield 7.5 per cent and mature in 115 months. The one for girl child savings, Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, will offer 8.3 per cent annually, from 8.4 per cent at present.

The investment on 5-year Senior Citizens Savings Scheme will yield 8.3 per cent. The interest rate on the senior citizens scheme is paid quarterly. Term deposits of 1-5 years will fetch a lower 6.8-7.6 per cent that will be paid quarterly while the 5-year recurring deposit has been pegged lower at 7.1 per cent.

"On the basis of the decision of the government, interest rates for small savings schemes are to be notified on a quarterly basis," the ministry said while notifying the rates for second quarter of financial year 2017-18.

While announcing the quarterly setting of interest rates, the ministry had said the rates of small saving schemes would be linked to government bond yields. The move is expected to prompt banks to lower the deposit rate in line with the small savings rate as offered by the government.

16:23   Modi wants to build grand monument of Lord Buddha in Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said he aspires to build a grand monument of Lord Buddha in Gujarat's Aravalli district where Buddhist relics were found during an excavation.

Addressing a gathering in Modasa city on the second day of his visit to the state, Modi, dressed in a traditional tribal attire, said the recent excavations in Aravalli have established that the Buddha was revered in the western belt of India as well.

"There was a general notion earlier that Lord Buddha was popular in the eastern belt of the country only. But, the excavation at Dev ni Mori near Shamlaji temple (in Aravalli) some time back has established that Lord Buddha's influence had reached the western belt too," he said.

"It is my dream to build a grand monument of Lord Buddha at Dev ni Mori, so that people from across the world can come here and visit this place. I'm confident of fulfilling my dream with your blessings," Modi said.

15:54   Why the Not In My Name protests did more harm than good
"It would be ok if the 'Not In My Name' protests were merely futile. One has to speak up and speak out even if one doesn't succeed, they argue. Silence is complicity. Fair enough. The problem is that the protests were actually counter-productive. A closer look at the PM's speech shows he made a distinction between non-violent cow protection and killings-in-the-name-of-cow-protection. He spoke at length on the issue of cow protection, narrating a story."

15:28   Kailash Mansarovar yatra via Nathu La cancelled
The Kailash Mansarovar yatra through the Nathu La pass in Sikkim has been cancelled, an official said today. The decision comes in the wake of a face-off between Indian and Chinese troops over a disputed area along the Sino-Indian border.

The move will come as a disappointment to the 400 devotees who were hoping to visit the high altitude area, believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, following an arduous trek along the Nathu La route.

Though the yatra through Nathu La in Sikkim will not take place this year, pilgrims travelling through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand will continue as scheduled, the government official said.

Eight batches, each comprising around 50 pilgrims, were scheduled to have taken the Nathu La route to Mansarovar in Tibet. The first batch was to have crossed over to China through Nathu La on June 20 and the last batch on July 31. It would have taken a batch 21 days to complete the pilgrimage.

China had issued visas for the first two batches and applications for the other pilgrims were put on hold because of the tension along the border. The first batch of Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims had to return from the Nathu La border post as the stand-off between India and China showed no signs of easing.

The pilgrims returned to Gangtok on June 23 after staying in Nathu La for three days awaiting permission from the Chinese side for the onward journey.

The second batch of pilgrims did not move from Gangtok and was eventually told to return home.

The Sikkim route to Mansarovar was thrown open to the public in 2015. The pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar, located at an altitude of 15,160 feet, takes place from June to September each year through the two routes. The Kailash Mansarovar yatra is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains and is undertaken by hundreds of pilgrims every year.

15:14   Hours ahead of GST rollout, Cong outs Modi's anti-GST video
Rahul Gandhi on GST: "A reform that holds great potential is being rushed through in a half-baked way with a self-promotional spectacle. India deserves a GST rollout that does not put crores of its ordinary citizens, small businesses & traders through tremendous pain and anxiety. Unlike demonetisation, GST is a reform that @INCIndia has championed & backed from the beginning.

The Congress on Friday tweeted undated clips of Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying "GST can never be successful" and implementing it is "impossible" without the requisite infrastructure.

"This is what Modi ji & the BJP really think of GST" is what the Congress captioned one clip. In it, Modi is seen saying: "On the question of GST, it is the BJP's view and the Gujarat government's view, from the very beginning, that GST can never be successful."

The Congress tweeted: "Modiji how quickly you forget your own words. Why are you rolling out GST without developing the proper infrastructure #GSTTamasha."

The Congress said yesterday it won't attend the GST rollout event at midnight, because, among other things, it finds its present format "unacceptable".

14:10   Chinese troops entered Doklam area: MEA
India has finally countered China's claim that Indian troops 'trespassed the Chinese border to obstruct construction of a road', saying Chinese troops had entered into the Doklam area.

In a statement, the MEA said it has conveyed to the Chinese government that such construction (in Doklam) will represent significant change of status quo with serious security implications.

The MEA said India has consistently taken a positive approach to the settlement of its own boundary with China, along with associated issue of tri-junctions.

India said it was deeply concerned at the recent Chinese actions and the road construction by China in Doklam area. India has asked China to maintain restraint and status quo.

India said on June 16, a PLA construction party entered Doklam to construct a road. It's our understanding that the Bhutan Army patrol tried to dissuade them. India Wants to solve border issues through dialogue."

China has refused entry to around 50 Indian pilgrims who were scheduled to travel to Kailash Mansarovar through the Nathu-la pass in Sikkim following which India has taken up the issue with Beijing.

The recent face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers reportedly took place over road construction on the borders of 269-sq.km Doklam plateau in Bhutan, but claimed by Beijing. The face-off was followed by China pushing back Indian pilgrims and stopping them from the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra.

12:39   Govt calls Ramgarh lynching 'barbaric', but says no religious angle
The government condemned on Friday the lynching of a 45-year-old Muslim meat trader in Jharkhand. The man was lynched for allegedl;y carrying beef and died as a result of his injuries.

The government condemned the incident but said there was no "religious angle' to it.

"It's a barbaric incident, should be condemned by all, don't bring religious angle in it," Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu told news agency ANI.

The comments came a day after the prime minister warned cow vigilantes to not take the law in their own hands and condemned any violence in the name of an animal considered holy by many Hindus.

But hours later, a 100-strong mob thrashed trader Alimuddin aka Asgar Ali, who died in hospital.

Photos showed the mob hitting the man, meat pieces strewn on the road, and his car in flames. In one photo, a bloodied and dazed Alimuddin was caught minutes before his death.

Incidents of cow vigilantism have mounted in India since the BJP stormed to power in 2014.

In April, a Muslim dairy farmer was lynched in Rajasthan's Alwar. Last week in Jharkhand's Giridih, a 200-strong mob thrashed a 55-year-old Muslim dairy owner and set his house ablaze after a cow carcass was found near his home.

Theresa May has been finally confirmed as the British Prime Minister, almost three weeks after the election, as she won a Commons vote on the Queen's Speech, owing to her stand on the abortion regulations which earlier threatened to bring down her Government.

The Tory leader avoided a major upset when she announced that they would fund abortions for Northern Irish women.322 MPs voted in favour of her agenda, with 309 voting against, with Jeremy Corbyn failing to win support for an anti-austerity motion.

There was another boost for the Tories when dozens of Labour MPs rebelled against Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit stance to support a motion keeping Britain in the single market.

The vote on the Queen's Speech is considered a vote of confidence on the Government as a whole - meaning that the PM would have had to quit if she lost. Despite the Tories losing their majority in the General Election on June 8, the party said it was confident of being able to stay in the Government.

Later, May struck a deal with the DUP, that she actually could be sure of commanding the support of a majority in the Commons.

Upon her arrival at the airport, Kumar, who will contest against NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind in the July 17 presidential poll, said it was a "battle of ideologies" and not a "Dalit versus Dalit" fight.
"Attempts are being made by some to project the election as a Dalit versus Dalit fight. It was from Gujarat that the ideology of Gandhiji spread across the country and world. That is why I have come here to make the people realise that we fight for our ideologies," she told reporters.
After meeting the Congress MLAs today, Kumar will interact with the media in the afternoon, said Patel.

It was at the Sabarmati Ashram yesterday, that PM Narendra Modi hit out at gau rakshaks and said violence in the name of protecting cattle was unacceptable.

The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for vehicular traffic due to blockade triggered by landslides in the Ramban and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Heavy rains triggered landslides on the highway at Nashri, Bali Nallah and Panthiyal areas in the day as a result of which few hundred were stranded.
"Due to heavy rains, there were 2-3 landslides on the highway stretch between Ramban and the Panthiyal area," a traffic police official said.
Another major landslide took place on highway at Bali Nallah in Udhampur district, he said, adding there was a minor landslide near Nashri tunnel in Ramban district.
In view of the blockade, over 150 vehicles were stranded at various places enroute the highway.
The men and machines of BRO are working to clear the highway to make it trafficable, he said.
The traffic police official, however, said the downpour was making the task difficult.

09:03   Complaints filed against Azam Khan over remarks against army
Two separate police complaints were lodged against senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan over his controversial remarks against the Indian Army.
Separate complaints were filed at Hazratganj and Gautampalli police stations. The complaint at Hazratganj was lodged by Janki Sharan Pandey.
Khan's remarks also triggered protests across Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
In Sambhal, workers of the Hindu Jagran Manch torched Khan's effigy and demanded that he be tried for treason.
Similar protests were reported from Chandausi, Jaunpur, Mathura and Lakhimpur Kheri.
On June 27, former Uttar Pradesh minister Khan had kicked up a storm with his remarks against the Indian Army.
Addressing party activists in Rampur, the SP national general secretary referred to "shameful violent incidents" in places such as Kashmir, Tripura, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Khan said excesses by security forces had led to "women in some places chopping off the private parts of army men".
The BJP hit out at the SP leader, demanding that Khan's party "sack" him for seeking to "divide the country" on religious lines.

08:59   Trump to meet Putin at G-20 summit in Germany
United States President Donald Trump will have a first face-to-face meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Germany next week on the sidelines of the G-20 leadership summit, the White House said.
The agenda of the meeting is still being worked out, officials said, adding that Trump is planning to have bilateral meetings with a host of other world leaders on the sidelines of the G-20 summit.
"The President has asked us to work together across all departments and agencies to do, really, three things:  to confront Russia's destabilising behaviour -- whether it's cyber threats, whether it's political subversion here in
Europe and elsewhere," US National Security Advisor, Lt Gen H R McMaster told reporters at a White House news conference.
"The second is to deter Russia. Because nobody wants a major power war, right?  So what is it that we have to put in place to be able to deter conflict. Then the third thing is to foster areas of cooperation," he said.
There are a lot of problems in the world that can be discussed during the meeting.  North Korea, for example, is one of them; the fight against transnational terrorist organisations is another, said the US National Security
Advisor.

In Germany, he said, Trump would hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, China, Mexico, Indonesia, and Singapore.
There could be more. In G-20, the primary objectives are to promote American prosperity, to protect American interests, and to provide American leadership.
"These three objectives tie together every engagement President Trump has with foreign leaders, whether here in the White House, as you saw with the strengthening of our strategic partnership with India during Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi's visit on Monday and we will see tonight and tomorrow with the strengthening of our alliance with South Korea during President Moon (Jae-in)'s visit," McMaster said.

06:29   Respect Hong Kong's liberty: US tells China
The US has urged China to respect civil liberties in Hong Kong as the territory marks the 20th anniversary of its hand over to Beijing's rule.
The State Department said the success of Hong Kong, which was given a large degree of autonomy when British colonial rule ended in July 1997, was due to its unique status.
While Washington valued its "excellent cooperation" with Hong Kong's government, it "remains concerned about any infringements of civil liberties in Hong Kong, including intrusions on press freedoms," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
Those concerns were expressed on a day the State Department approved arms sales to Taiwan worth $1.4 billion, the first such deal since President Donald J Trump took office.
The sale will anger China which regards Taiwan as part of its territory
and comes at a time when Washington is engaged in persuading Beijing control its ally, North Korea.
