17:03   China denies entry to Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims
China has refused entry to the first batch of around 50 Indian pilgrims who were scheduled to travel to Kailash Mansarovar through the Nathu La pass in Sikkim, citing damage to roads due to rains and landslides in the Tibet region.

The 47 pilgrims, who were stopped by the Chinese officials at the border from proceeding further, have now returned to their respective states, official sources said today.

The pilgrims were scheduled to cross over to the Chinese side on June 19 but had failed to do so due to inclement weather. They had waited at the base camp and tried to cross again yesterday but were denied permission by the Chinese officials.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Gopal Baglay had yesterday said some difficulties were being experienced in the movement of pilgrims through Nathu La and that India is taking up the matter with China.

The development has cast a shadow of uncertainty on the annual yatra as Chinese officials maintained that it would take some time to repair the roads and the Indians would not be able to make the pilgrimage any time soon.

On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit, the Trump administration has dismissed reports that it has been ignoring India, saying
President Donald Trump realises that the country has been a "force for good" in the world and ties with it were important.

"I think that it would be wrong to say that this administration has been ignoring or not focused on India," a senior administration official told reporters ahead of the two-day Modi visit from June 25.

The PM would meet President Donald Trump face-to-face for the first time at the White House on Monday.

"I think that the US really appreciates India, and I think that President Trump realises that India has been a force for good in the world and that it's a relationship that's important. And I think that will come through in the visit on Monday," the official said.

The senior administration official made the remarks while responding to questions on whether the US-India relationship has drifted under the new government, in part, because of President Trump and the administration's support to China.

14:54   Hindi is our identity, we should be proud of it: Venkaiah Naidu
Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu may have just stoked fresh controversy over use of Hindi language. Venkaiah Naidu today said Hindi language is the identity of the Indians.

"Hindi hamari matribhasha hamari pehchan hai. Hamein ispe garv karna chahiye (Hindi is out mother tongue, our identity. We should be proud of it)," Venkaiah Naidu said.

Naidu termed the widespread use of English language in our work and daily life as detrimental to the progress of the nation. He said, "Angrezi seekhte seekhte hum angrezi mind mein bhi aa gaye hain. Ye desh ke hit mein nahi hai (While learning English, we have trained our minds like English people. This is not in the interests of the nation)."

Earlier in April, Venkaiah Naidu had defended a move by the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language proposing to make use of Hindi mandatory both in speech and writing for MPs and Union ministers, who could read and write the language.

13:02   China stalls India's wait for NSG membership again
Thanks to China, India's wait for Nuclear Suppliers Group membership continues as the twenty-seventh plenary meeting of the body ended here without handing out any good news for New Delhi.

Beijing has been objecting to New Delhi's entry into the NSG on grounds that it has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty on nuclear weapons.

The NPT, opened for signature in 1968 and entered into force in 1970, defines nuclear-weapon states as those that have built and tested a nuclear explosive device before 1 January 1967. These are the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China.

Except China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France have already extended support for India's entry into the NSG.

India has not signed the NPT as its traditional position has always been either 'The Five' should denuclearise or everyone has the same rights to have nuclear weapons.

However, to send a message of responsible nuclear nation India has a stated policy of 'no first use'. Despite being a non-signatory of the NPT, India adheres to the NSG's norms.

The two-day meeting, however, discussed NSG's relationship with India and considered aspects of the implementation of the 2008 Statement on Civil Nuclear Cooperation with India.

The NSG meeting was chaired by Ambassador Benno Laggner of Switzerland and it also took stock of developments since the last meeting in Seoul in 2016.

The NSG, a group of 48 nuclear supplier countries, seeks to contribute to the NPT through the implementation of two sets of Guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear-related exports.

11:45   Five London towers being evacuated over fire safety inspection
In the aftermath of the tragic fire that broke out at the Grenfell Tower, residents from over 800 homes were evacuated following inspection of fire safety norms and its compliance, reports The Guardian.

Authorities are looking to relocate the said residents for a period of four weeks from the five high-rise blocks on the Chalcots estate in Swiss Cottage in the borough of Camden.

"At the moment, all we care about is getting people to safety. The cost we can deal with later," said leader of Camden council, Labour's Georgia Gould.

A rest centre for residents has been set up at Swiss Cottage library, she said, adding that efforts by council staff to process residents' cases there were getting underway immediately.

The council had already announced that it would immediately begin preparing to remove cladding from five towers on the estate, which was discovered in an inspection ordered after the Grenfell disaster in north Kensington that killed at least 79 people.

The evacuation was initiated after four more victims of Grenfell Tower were formally identified, taking the known victims of the fire to nine. Scotland Yard also revealed that detectives were keeping open the option of bringing manslaughter charges relating to the blaze.

Investigation has revealed that the deadly Grenfell Tower fire, which has claimed at least 79 lives, was started by a Hotpoint fridge-freezer before spreading to the building's combustible cladding.

Metropolitan Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack, who is leading the investigation, said the Hotpoint FF175BP model had not been subject to any product recall but the building's cladding, tiles and insulation failed safety tests carried out as part of the investigation.

The government has ordered an "immediate examination" of the unit to establish the cause of the fire and whether any further action is needed.

09:08   Was Pakistan's BAT live-streaming attack on Indian soldiers?
The Pakistani Border Action Team, made up of special forces men and terrorists, were armed with 'special daggers' and 'headband cameras' to mutilate and record the attack on the Indian Army patrol party after entering 600 meters across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.

The attack left two Indian soldiers dead while one BAT member was killed in retaliatory action by Indian troops.

Army troops, during search and sanitation operations, recovered the body of a member of the BAT team along the LoC in Gulpur sector of Poonch district on Thursday.

"The body of the intruder killed in the BAT attempt on June 22 has been retrieved and handed over to the local police," a senior army officer told PTI. "Arms, ammunition and other war-like stores including a special dagger and a headband with a camera, knife, one AK rifle, 3 magazines, 2 grenades besides dresses and bags were recovered which reflects the barbaric mindset of the Pakistan Army," he said.

"The resolute action of our soldiers didn't let the nefarious plan (of mutilating bodies and recording it on camera) succeed," officer said.

Giving details, he said that a special class of dagger and a knife were meant to engineer quick mutilation and beheading of jawans killed in the firing exchanges and it has been foiled by the quick action by Indian soldiers.

The BAT member was wearing headband with camera on his head to record the action and possible mutilation of jawans, which was prevented by other troops who shot dead one of them and injured another, he said.

The officer said it was being investigated whether the camera was live connected with Pakistan Army establishments across the border.

"The data and details of the camera will be analysed," he said.

08:30   Infosys pays $1 mn to New York state to settle visa violations
Infosys has made $1-million settlement with the New York state after it was found that it violated US visa rules by placing employees on a different visa at its clients' offices in the state, reports Business Standard.

The settlement was announced on Friday by Attorney General Eric T Scheiderman saying it resolves whistleblower claims that Infosys, in the course of providing outsourcing services, routinely brought foreign IT personnel into New York to perform work in violation of the terms of their visas.

Infosys sent workers from India to its clients in the US visa on B1 visa instead of the H1B visas that has more restrictions and wage requirements, the attorney general's office said.

"We will not permit companies to violate our laws in order to undercut New York workers," said Schneiderman.

In addition to securing employment of foreign workers at a lower wage, Infosys avoided paying applicable payroll taxes on the wages of the foreign workers it improperly placed at New York client sites, it said.
