The convocation ceremony will be held on June 15 and 16 in which some 1,600 students of graduate and post graduate levels will receive their degrees from chairman of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran.

The Centre on Tuesday rushed 600 additional paramilitary personnel to Darjeeling to assist the administration in restoring normalcy and sought a detailed report on the prevailing situation in the hill district from the West Bengal government.

A home ministry spokesperson said as many as 600 paramilitary personnel, including 200 women, were sent to Darjeeling.

Around 400 personnel, already stationed in West Bengal, have also been deployed in Darjeeling along with the additional forces.

The home ministry also sought a detailed report on the prevailing situation in Darjeeling which has witnessed violence in last few days. The home ministry is closely monitoring the situation in the hill district and is ready to offer all required assistance to the state government to restore normalcy there.

As their indefinite shutdown entered its second day today, protesters demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland pelted the police with stones at various parts of Darjeeling as they were stopped from enforcing their shutdown in many government offices.

Yesterday too, Gorkhaland supporters vandalised government offices in Darjeeling as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha-sponsored indefinite shutdown forced tourists out of the picturesque hill station due to threat of violence.

The Morcha, which controls the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, has called a shutdown of all state and GTA offices to press its demand for creation of a separate state.  -- PTI

18:41   Sairat sensation Rinku scores 66.4% in SSC
The lead actress of Marathi blockbuster Sairat Rinku Rajguru, who became a household name in Maharashtra after the grand success of the movie, has cleared the Class 10 examination of the state board.

Rinku scored 66.4 per cent marks in her SSC exam.

She scored 59 out of 100 in English. Incidentally, a popular line her character, 'Aarchi', mouthes in the film is: 'Did you get it, or should I translate it into English?'

Sairat, released last year, became the first Marathi film to earn Rs 100 crore, and made waves even outside Maharashtra.

It revolves around a teenage inter-caste romance which meets a tragic end.

While appearing for the exam, Rinku had said she covered the syllabus in just over a month of study. She had failed to make it to the school on the first day of the new academic year, disappointing the waiting media-persons and fellow students.

She appeared for the exam at a centre in her native Solapur district.

"The transition from 'lights, camera, action' to 'physics, chemistry, maths' was not difficult. The one and a half month period I got for studies was enough," she had said.

In June last year Rinku attended her school at Akluj in Solapur district after being away from home for a couple of months, attending promotional and celebration events and appearing on popular TV shows after the film released to a rousing reception.

Earlier, a day after she got a special mention when the National Film Awards were announced, Rinku appeared for her class 9th exam in her school Jijamata Kanya Prashala and scored 81 per cent.  -- PTI

18:15   No time frame can be specified for Mallya's extradition: V K Singh
Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh on Tuesday said all necessary steps have been taken to bring back embattled tycoon Vijay Mallya from the United Kingdom but, 'as of now', no time frame can be specified for his extradition.

Singh told reporters here that the documents required for the purpose of extradition have been sent to the UK.

"...They are examining the papers and we are waiting. Whenever the UK gives a go ahead, Mallya can be brought back to India," he said.

Extradition is not as easy and simple as people think, the union minister said, adding that some conditions are laid down when an extradition treaty is signed with a country.

The UK and its laws believe that if someone enters their country with a valid passport which is later cancelled they would not take action, he said.

"From India's side, the documents required for the purpose have been sent on behalf of the Enforcement Directorate to the UK authorities who are examining the papers before taking a decision," Singh said.

"No time frame can be specified now as to when the liquor baron would be brought back to India," he said.

The minister's statement came on a day when Mallya, who is wanted in India on loan defaults to several banks, is set to appear before the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London for his extradition case hearing. -- PTI

Vijay Mallya challenges India after the hearing, says, "keep dreaming about the millions. I have enough proof and I'm happy to be tried in a fair UK court."

Mallya, who fled India last year owing more than Rs 9,000-crore to 13 banks, faces an extradition hearing at Londons Westminster Magistrates Court where the Crown Prosecution Service will argue the case for India.

Just in: A little birdie tells us that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be leaving for London in six days time. Rahul frequents London on private trips, even spending new year there.

12:11   The REAL reason behind Amit Shah's breakfast meeting with Naidu
Who among these two dozen names will be chosen for the next president of India.

Or may be, none.

New Delhi can talk about nothing else but the presidential elections which are scheduled for July 17. The results will be declared on the 20th. The filing of nomination for the election begins on June 14 and continues till June 28.

The names, of which there are over two dozen, begin with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat (suggested by the BJP's ally Shiv Sena) and continue on to former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson and former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh. Other names include JDU leader Sharad Yadav, SAD's Parkash Singh Badal, current Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Union minister Thawar Chand Gehlot, Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj and Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik.

Names outside politics include, economist Dr Amartya Sen, former chairman of the Tata group, Ratan Tata, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, Metro man E Sreedharan etc.

These names will be assessed and one name chosen, or so the Opposition believes.

However, government sources speculate that BJP president Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi have already decided on a name, which is being kept top secret.

They want the Opposition and the BJP's three-member committee (Venkaiah Naidu, Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh) to arrive at a name, but the real name will be revealed after a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting.

The Opposition's consensus candidate may be announced on Wednesday when the Leaders of Opposition meet at Sonia Gandhi's residence, the second meeting to decide a name.

This morning, BJP president Amit Shah drove down to Venkaiah Naidu's home for an Andhra breakfast of Pesarattu dosa. BJP circles are agog with speculation that the reason for the meeting is to soften up Naidu, who has been peeved after he was chosen by Shah to be part of the three-member committee to decide the next president.

This means Naidu is out of the running as he certainly cannot choose himself as a candidate.

The union minister has long been considered as a Presidential or vice-presidential candidate and sources say Naidu is disappointed at being out of the race.

It would be safe to say that the Amit Shah constituted committee would not have happened without the PM's nod. Tellingly, both Rajnath and Naidu have been past president's of the BJP. Party leaders speculate that Amit Shah will soon meet Rajnath and Jaitley.

10:52   FIR against Cong MLA for inciting violence in Mandsaur
An FIR has been registered against Congress MLA Shakuntala Khatik and Venus Goyal in the Karera Police station in Mandsaur on charges of inciting a mob and other sections to resort to violence.

A day before, the Congress' Shivpuri MLA brushed aside the allegation of inciting violence during farmers protest in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh.

"I didn't instigate the workers. Would they have remained silent, had I asked them to do so?" Khatik told ANI.

Khatik further said that she only told the police officers that they shouldn't sit in the police station and go ahead to set it on fire, if they can't ensure women safety.

A video of the Congress MLA had surfaced showing her purportedly inciting party workers and farmers to torch a police station during the farmers protest.

The Congress leader was seen in the video repeatedly inciting people to accompany her to burn down the nearby police station, whereas a police official was seen requesting the MLA to calm down.

Following the video, the BJP demanded the MLA's arrest and cornered the Congress asking party vice-president Rahul Gandhi to apologise for the irresponsible behaviour of his party leader.

09:52   Pak baby Sushma promised help arrives in Delhi for treatment
Four-month-old infant, Rohaan, who was slated to come to India for medical treatment banking on the assurance by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, arrived in Noida on Monday evening, and will undergo treatment at Jaypee Hospital in the national capital.

Rohaan, who has a hole in his heart, was referred to the multi-speciality hospital for treatment. However, in the backdrop of cross-border tension between India and Pakistan, his parents were unable to get medical visa for their child's treatment in India.

So, Rohaan's father Kanwal Sadiq, approached Sushma Swaraj and made a plea for a medical visa. Upon receiving the request, she immediately directed the authorities to grant medical visa to Rohaan's family, who arrived with him via Wagah Border.

To this, the Indian minister swung into action and replied with a tweet, "No. The child will not suffer. Pls contact Indian High Commission in Pakistan. We will give the medical visa."

Dr. Ashutosh Marwah, an eminent pediatric cardiologist along with pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Rajesh Sharma will investigate and treat Rohaan.

09:41   Does Gandhi have a caste?
"We have recently been reminded that Gandhi was born in a bania household. But, back in 1922, few, if any, banias were farmers or weavers; few, if any, are even today. Yet Gandhi's self-description was accurate; for in the Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi did not trade, but he did spin daily and experiment with crops and livestock rearing. That statement to an Ahmedabad court was a striking example of Gandhi's lifelong commitment to making his caste origins irrelevant to his personal and public life."

09:37   240 Euro fine if you dip your feet in the Trevi fountain
Heading to Rome? Read this.

Municipal authorities in Rome are said to be imposing fines on locals and tourists indulging in unacceptable behaviour, in an attempt to protect their key monuments such as the Trevi fountain and the Colosseum, among others.

With the summer setting in and temperatures soaring, tourists and locals around the Trevi fountain are being found sitting with their feet in the water and even going for a swim.

With the new penalty in place, Mayor Virginia Raggi on Monday said anyone caught doing such malpractices can be fined upto 240 Euros, with a minimum fine of 40 Euros, reports the Guardian.

The new rule, functional presently, will be valid until 31 October. The police have been assigned the task of monitoring compliance with the new proposal.

Apart from the aforementioned landmark monuments, the rule has also been levied on the 500 year-old Barcaccia, a boat-shaped fountain at the foot of the Spanish Steps which was badly chipped by drunken football fans in 2015.

09:34   Democrats parody Trump for his 'all praise' Cabinet meeting
Minutes after United States President Donald Trump received a 'tribute paying session' at his Cabinet meeting in full public view on Monday, senior Democrat and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer released a short video parodying the round table.

The 25-second video features the minority leader surrounded by his flattering staff, who are all praise for him just like Vice-President Mike Pence, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and others were towards Trump.

"I want to thank everyone for coming. I just thought we'd go 'round the room," Schumer says.

His staff then proceeds to speak in turn, each flattering the Senator.

"Your tone was perfect. You were right on message," the first staffer, Lucy, says about his Sunday show appearance.

"Michelle, how'd my hair look coming out of the gym this morning?" Schumer asks, turning to the next staffer.

"You have great hair. Nobody has better hair than you," Michelle says.

Schumer's third staffer jumps into the conversation directly quoting part of White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus's earlier statement: "Before we go any further, I just want to say thank you for the opportunity and blessing to serve your agenda."

The group then bursts into laughter.

Earlier, at the Cabinet meeting, heads of his executive branch agencies showered praises on the first five months of Trump's administration, while the President basks in the pouring admiration.

09:17   Remember Trump's covfefe? Now it's an official act!
With the world still befuddled trying to figure out the meaning of 'covfefe'- a term seemingly coined by President Donald Trump, the word has now become an official bill.

Democratic Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois has introduced the "COVFEFE Act," in order to preserve a President's social media records, reports CNN.

Quigley's bill turns the word into an acronym standing for the 'Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically for Engagement Act', which would broaden the scope of the Presidential Records Act of 1978 by including the term "social media" as documentary material.

On May 31, President Donald Trump declared at 12:06 a.m. on Twitter: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe."

The tweet was published for several hours before being removed, allowing observers plenty of time to ponder the meaning of "covfefe" and also produced a stream of memes.

But the deletion of the tweet also raised questions about how the Presidents' social media should be handled and preserved.

"In order to maintain public trust in government, elected officials must answer for what they do and say; this includes 140-character tweets," Quigley, who co-founded the Congressional Transparency Caucus, said in a statement.

He further said that Trump's frequent, unfiltered use of his personal Twitter account is "unprecedented."

If the President is going to take to social media to make sudden public policy proclamations, we must ensure that these statements are documented and preserved for future reference. Tweets are powerful, and the President must be held accountable for every post," the lawmaker said

09:02   AAP slams Centre over following 'dual policy' towards Pakistan
The Aam Aadmi Party has attacked the Centre over the release of 11 Pakistani civilians, saying the government is following a dual policy towards Pakistan.
Senior party leader Ashutosh said on the one hand, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj says there cannot be talks with Pakistan alongside terror and on the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embraces his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
He was referring to the interaction between the two premiers at Astana in Kazakhstan.
"What was the pressing need that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to embrace Sharif. Pakistan is preparing to hang Kulbhushan Jadhav and India is releasing 11 of their citizens," Ashutosh said.
Jadhav was sentenced to death on April 10 by a Pakistan military court for alleged espionage.
India maintains that Jadhav, a forrmer naval officer, was kidnapped from Iran and brought to Pakistan by its security agencies.
Sharif and Modi had last week met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation meeting.

08:59   Quantum of loan waiver for farmers yet to be worked out: Maharashtra minister
Maharashtra minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has said the exact quantum of the loan waiver to be given to farmers was yet to be worked out.
"The quantum of loan waiver will only be known after the committee arrives at a decision on the criteria for loan waiver. It will be for the committee to decide on whether to grant loan waiver only to those farmers, whose livelihood is solely dependent on farming and whether to exclude rich farmers from the purview of the loan waiver package," he said.
Farmers in the state, who had been agitating to press for their several demands since June 1, on Sunday called off their protests, after the Maharashtra government announced a loan waiver and decided to form a committee to decide the criteria of debt relief.
When asked about how the state government intended to raise funds for the loan waiver, the finance minister said the government would appoint a committee comprising farmer leaders and government officials, which would work out the eligibility criteria and then arrive at the quantum of loan waiver package.
"The government has many options like tapping the unused funds in the personal ledger account of the government departments to raise the requisite funds for the loan waiver package," he said while assuring that the state's
finances were sound.
Replying to queries, he said the proposed joint committee of the government and farmer leaders would meet on who amongst the farmers should be considered eligible to avail the loan waiver.
Mungantiwar said that the government departments have unused funds received from the state and the Centre, which are parked in the PLA.
Besides this, the government can raise additional funds through raising non tax revenue, which is generated out of fines, government fees and other charges, he said.
At present the government NTR income is Rs 16,000 crore, which it intends to raise it to Rs 26,000 crore, he added.
After the goods and services tax comes into effect from July 1, the state's income is set to rise by Rs 14,000 crore, Mungantiwar said.

08:24   Trump 'looking forward' to meeting Modi on June 26, says White House
United States President Donald Trump is looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 26, the White House said.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Trump "looks forward" to his meeting with Modi and discuss ways to strengthen the bilateral ties to "advance our common priorities: fighting terrorism, promoting economic growth and reforms, and expanding security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region."
"President Trump and Prime Minister Modi will look to outline a common vision for the US-India partnership that is worthy of their 1.6 billion citizens," Spicer said.
He said they are expected to set forth a vision that will expand the bilateral partnership "in an ambitious and worthy way of both countries' people."
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in her annual press meet last week, however, said Modi would also raise the issues surrounding the US' plans to reduce the number of H-1B visa slots that are mainly used by Indian IT workers.
Almost 1.8 million H-1B visas have been distributed in fiscal years 2001 through 2015, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of government data. From fiscal years 2001 to 2015, workers from India received the largest share (50.5 per cent) of all H-1B visas for first-time employment.
Despite the recent hiccups over the issue, US-India trade has grown six-fold since 2000, from USD 19 billion to USD 115 billion in 2016, according to the White House. "US energy and technologies, including natural gas, are helping to build Prime Minister Modi's vision for a new India and creating thousands of US jobs in the process," Spicer said.
Apart from ways to enhance trade and business cooperation, Modi and Trump are expected to discuss defence ties.
US Defence Secretary James Mattis has already made it clear that his country recognises India as a major defence "partner partly out of respect" for New Delhi's "indispensable role" in maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean region.

00:10   Norway to ban full-face veil in nurseries, schools and universities
Norway is proposing a ban on the Muslim full face veil and other face-covering clothing because it says it hinders communication between pupils and teachers.

The ban, the first in Scandinavia, targets the niqab as well as burqas, balaclavas and masks, and would apply in nurseries, schools and universities.

However headscarves, hats and caps could continue to be worn.

Most parties support the bill, which is expected to pass next year.
"These clothes prevent good communication, which is important for students to receive a good education," Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen said in a statement.
