He thought he could kill the Russia probe by ousting Comey, without it ever occurring to him that Comey would then be free to testify about those meetings at the White House, further clarifying the extent of his obstruction, while the Trump-Russia investigation moves forward anyway, now with acting FBI director Andy McCabe and special counsel Robert Mueller sharing the helm.
