21:01   Nikki Haley defends Trump's decision on exit from climate accord
United States envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley has defended President Donald Trump's controversial decision to withdraw from the landmark Paris accord but underlined that America was committed to curbing climate change.
Trump last week withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement and said that India would get billions of dollars for meeting its commitment under the 2015 Paris Agreement along with China and gain a financial advantage over the US.
He had put the US in league with two other nations -- Syria and Nicaragua -- who have not signed onto the deal agreed by over 190 other nations.
The decision has drawn a negative reaction from around the world with world leaders vowed to enhance their commitment to the landmark accord.
"Just because the US got out of a club does not mean we are not going to care about the environment," the Indian-American senior diplomat said..
Haley, 45, has defended Trump's decision saying he knows climate is changing.
Trump "knows that it is changing and that the US has to be responsible for it and that is what we are going to do," Haley said, adding that withdrawing from the Paris agreement will not change the country's commitment to curbing climate change, the CNN reported.
"President Trump believes the climate is changing and he believes pollutants are part of the equation," Haley said.
When asked why the US pulled out of the climate agreement, Haley blamed former President Barack Obama for agreeing to regulations that were "too onerous," too strict and ultimately unachievable.
Haley said the regulations from the Paris agreement were disadvantaging the companies.
"I knew that as a governor. The jobs were not attainable as long as we lived under those regulations. It was not possible to meet the goals had we attempted to," she said.
Haley's comments are the closest acknowledgement by an administration official since Trump took office that the President -- who has called climate change a "hoax" on multiple occasions -- believes global warming is occurring and humanity has a role in it.

20:35   I am reading Upanishads, Gita to take on RSS, BJP: Rahul
Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said he was reading Upanishads and the Bhagwad Gita to take on the RSS and BJP.

"Nowadays I study the Upanishads and the Gita since I am fighting the RSS and BJP," he said addressing party functionaries in Chennai.

"I ask them (RSS men), my friend, you are doing this, you are oppressing people, but it is written in the Upanishad that all people are the same and how come you are contradicting what your own religion says," party sources quoted him as having told them.

He alleged that BJP does not fundamentally "understand India," and "understand only Nagpur," headquarters of the RSS.

Taking potshots at Narendra Modi, he said BJP men were under the impression that the "entire universal knowledge" came out of the Prime Minister.

Gandhi, who has accused BJP-RSS of attempting to thrust one idea on the nation, said every individual, be it in Tamil Nadu or Uttar Pradesh, had a right to express dissent if they were aggrieved, and imposition of one idea was not acceptable.

While expressing his appreciation for people of Tamil Nadu, their language, culture and culinary, "which is a strength for India like other states," Gandhi said he had a special connect with the state.

He also said that "he has decided to start watching Tamil movies," and "read about the culture of Tamil Nadu people."

"Sent an SMS to my sister, I told my sister that I love coming to Tamil Nadu. I don't know ... some how I feel very connected to Tamil people," Gandhi said.
"I wrote (to Priyanka), I love Tamil, Tamils. She wrote back I love them too," he added.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Su Thirunavukkarasar, Congress Legislature Party leader K R Ramasamy were among the functionaries who attended the meeting.

19:53   Opposition criticising Modi have forgotten days of Emergency: Naidu
Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday hit back at opposition parties for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being "authoritarian", saying they had "completely forgotten the dark days of Emergency" clamped
by Indira Gandhi.
Naidu, who holds the portfolio of information and broadcasting, claimed that as more leaders of opposition parties were "getting trailed for their deeds of corruption", they were finding the prime minister authoritarian.
The comments came after some opposition leaders alleged that Modi and the RSS were trying to impose "one idea" on the country and that the prime minister was unilaterally making all the decisions.
The remarks were made by leaders during a meeting on the occasion of 94th birthday of veteran politician M Karunanidhi in Chennai.
Naidu claimed the level and quality of such criticism revealed the unbridgeable disconnect between those parties and the people of the county.
He said it showed the mounting frustration of opposition parties over the growing appeal of the prime minister among the people and steady political expansion of the BJP since 2014.
"While accusing the prime minister of being authoritarian, these leaders have completely forgotten the dark days of Emergency clamped by former prime minister Indira Gandhi. The dubious theory of Indira is India and India is Indira...," Naidu told reporters.
He also claimed that there was "denigration of the dignity and authority of the institution of the prime minister during the 10 years of the UPA rule" and a "gross abuse of power for personal and family gains during the Congress rule".
"What is more amazing is that the communists seem to have forgotten all the hoary past under the Congress and their own rule. This amnesia could only be explained by their getting rolled out of the country's political canvas," he claimed.

18:45   Shell cos directors to face up to five-year disqualification
Directors of companies that have not been carrying out business for a long time are set to be disqualified from holding directorship in any registered firm for up to five years, as part of the government's intensified efforts against the black money menace.
Shell companies are dubious entities that are generally used for laundering illegal wealth.
With nearly three lakh companies already under the scanner, the government is preparing to initiate stringent steps against the erring entities, including striking off their names and taking action against directors concerned,
according to sources.
Apart from serving show cause notices to companies that have been not submitting their financial statements under the Companies Act for a long time, the Corporate Affairs Ministry is in the process of preparing a database of shell firms which would further help in curbing illegal business activities.
Sources said that action would be taken against the directors of the defaulting companies including, disqualification of directors under the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013.
As per Section 164 of the Act -- which is implemented by the ministry -- a person shall not be eligible to hold directorship on various grounds including that he was a director of a company that has not filed financial statements or annual returns for continuous three financial years.

18:15   London terror attack: UK police arrest 12 people
UK police on Sunday said that they have arrested 12 people in connection with Saturday night's attacks.

Seven people were killed while 48 injured in the latest terror attack in Britain.

The arrests in Barking, east London, followed a raid by police at a flat owned by one of the three attackers.

A white van hit pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday, then three men got out and stabbed people in nearby Borough Market. They were shot dead by police minutes later.

Condemning the attack, UK PM Theresa May said it was "time to say enough is enough".

It is the third terror attack in the UK in three months, following the car and knife attack in Westminster in March, which left five people dead, and the Manchester bombing less than two weeks ago, in which 22 people were killed.

17:35   No plans to take Amar in Samajwadi Front: Shivpal
Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav on Sunday said he has no plans to take Amar Singh in his proposed Samajawadi Secular Front and that he had also opposed his rejoining the party last year.
"I was not in favour of Amar Singh joining the SP again. I knew he will not be getting due respect and one should avoid...You can ask anyone I was not in his favour", Yadav said.
Amar was termed as an "outsider" by SP president Akhilesh Yadav during he state assembly polls.
The Samajwadi Party had in May 2016 declared Amar Singh as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections taking him back to the party, six years after his expulsion.
Amar was expelled from the SP along with then Rampur MP Jaya Prada in February 2010 on charges of anti-party activities, after which he established his own party -- Lok Manch.
In 2014, however, Amar Singh and Mulayam were again seen together at a function in Lucknow, after which they kept meeting frequently.
Amar was expelled on Jan 1 this year at the SP national convention when Akhilesh became SP president.
Asked whether he would consider taking Amar in his front, Shivpal said, "There is no plan as such to take him. We will take along all the 'samajwadis' (socialists), who are feeling neglected".
Shivpal said, "He is open to do anything for unity within the family. If they (Akhilesh and others) want they can sit with netaji (Mulayam). I want to ensure that netaji gets due respect. And for this I am ready for any placement".
Holding "sycophancy and backbiting" responsible for the dispute within the family, Shivpal said, "all will be well if the family is united. There is no reason for dispute within the family. Our first priority will be to unite the family".

17:31   Government initiates process for appointing 44 HC judges
The government is learnt to have initiated the process for appointing 44 high court judges after initially having returned their names to the Supreme Court collegium for reconsideration on two occasions.
While 29 candidates are from the Allahabad high court, two are from Karnataka, seven from Calcutta and six from the Madras high courts, highly-placed sources said today.

On April 10, the collegium -- a body of five senior-most judges of the apex court -- had for a second time reaffimed its decision recommending the candidates for appointment as HC judges.
The decision to reiterate the recommendation for the second time was taken by the collegium, now headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar.
As per an established practice, the government usually appoints a person as a judge once the collegium reiterates its recommendation.
But in the recent past, the Modi government had expressed its disapproval of the collegium's recommendations by returning them more than once.
Last week, a total of 17 judges were appointed to the Bombay and the Jammu and Kashmir high courts.
While 14 judges were appointed to the Bombay High Court, three were appointed to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
The approved strength of the 24 high courts is 1,079 judges, but they are functioning with a truncated strength of 629 -- a shortage of 450 judges.

17:02   Open to suggestions on cattle slaughter notification: Government
The government on Sunday said it is open to the suggestions made by various groups on the cattle slaughter notification and was not viewing it as a prestige issue, amid a raging row over the order.
Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said the intention behind the notification was not to harm any particular group, influence food habits or affect slaughter business.
"Suggestions that have been submitted will be reviewed. It is not a prestige issue for the government," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function to mark World Environment Day.
The minister was asked if these representations were being reviewed and if the government was open to considering alternative views on the issue.
The row over beef eating and cattle trade has sparked a nationwide controversy and protests have been held in several states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has described the ban as undemocratic and unconstitutional and said her government will not accept it.
On May 30, the Madras high court had stayed for four weeks the enforcement of the contentious notification banning sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter.
The order had come on a petition challenging the bar as inimical to personal liberty, peoples rights to livelihood and an encroachment into matters that are within the domain of the states.

Harsh Vardhan said, "Rules under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, are not to influence food habits, or affect slaughtering business."

16:02   SFIO developing new system to trawl social media for corporate fraud leads
The government's white-collar crime investigation agency Serious Fraud Investigation Office is developing a new system, which will trawl social media platforms for leads on any possible fraud-in-making.
Also, the new system will help in early detection of corporate frauds and safeguard gullible investors from fly- by-night operators.
The SFIO, which comes under the Corporate Affairs Ministry, has floated a tender for selection of a 'managed service provider' to develop this 'Early Warning System'. The interested parties can submit their bids till July 10.
The idea of developing an EWS was first floated in 2009 after the Satyam fraud came into light.
The new system would leverage MCA 21 database as primary data along with data available from other regulatory organisations and external sources including social media, that help in detecting potential frauds.
It would generate the data that helps in raising red flags and alerts using business intelligence and analytics capabilities. It would help in protecting investors from getting exploited by the deceitful companies or persons.
Besides, it would help in identifying companies for further examination, scrutiny or detailed investigation by Registrar of Companies (ROCs), other offices of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, or by the SFIO.
The system would safeguard against disruptions caused by corporate fraud events, by proactively monitoring the operations of the companies, through the statutory reporting mechanisms and other data available in the public domain.

15:38   Enough is enough: UK PM Theresa May on London attack
United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May has said it is time to say "enough is enough" when it comes to tackling terrorism after another terror attack rocked London in which seven people lost their lives.

"We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are," she said.

"Our country needs to come together to take on extremism and terrorism. It is time to say enough is enough," May said.

She said the general election will go ahead as planned on Thursday, May 8.

The PM calls for tougher controls on cyberspace to prevent use by extremists.

"Recent attacks bound together by evil ideology that says Western values incompatible with Islam," she said.

"There is far too much tolerance of extremism in our country," she added.

15:29   CRPF refuses to share IG report on extra judicial killings
The CRPF has refused to make public a fake encounter report, filed by one of its Inspector Generals, citing exemption granted to the paramilitary from disclosures under the RTI Act.
In response to a query seeking a copy of the report on the fake encounter by a joint squad of security forces in Assam in which two persons were killed in cold blood, the CRPF cited section 24 of the RTI Act.
Extra judicial killings are violation of human rights and do not come under the exemption given to some organisations from making disclosures under the RTI Act.
The act says when the information sought for pertains to human rights violations, it "shall be" provided after sanction from the Central Information Commission within 45 days.
But the CRPF rather than referring the matter to the CIC, "rejected" the application.
Rajnish Rai, a 1992-batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, had filed a report with the CRPF top brass chronicling how a joint team of the Army, the Assam Police, the CRPF, its jungle warfare unit CoBRA and the border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) conducted the encounter on March 29 -30 in Simlaguri area of Chirang district and killed what they called were two insurgents of the banned group NDFB (S).
Rai, in his 13-page report, alleged that information about the incident and FIR filed by the joint squad of forces present a "fictitious account" of the operation to "conceal pre-planned murders of two persons in custody and present it as some brave act of professional achievement".

14:03   UK parties suspend election campaign after terror attack
Two of Britain's main parties, including the ruling Conservative party, on Sunday decided to suspend its campaign for the general election after the terrorist attack in London, which killed six persons and injured 48 others.
The ruling Conservative party announced that it was suspending its campaign following the attack just days before the polls on June 8 involving a van and three terror suspects, who were shot dead by Metropolitan Police armed officers.
"The Conservative party will not be campaigning nationally today. We will review as the day goes on and as more details of the attack emerge," a Tory party spokesperson said.
The Opposition Labour party has also indicated that all planned campaign events for today would be called off.
The Scottish National Party has also called off its campaign for today.
However, the suspension will not include local campaigning, and local candidates will have the freedom to use their judgement.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said he is "passionate believer in democracy" and would not want to see the election date being affected by the latest incident.
"There can be no justification for the acts of these terrorists and I'm quite clear we'll never let them win nor we will allow them to cower our city or Londoners," he said.
A white van hit pedestrians on London Bridge last night before three men got out and stabbed people in nearby Borough Market, a very busy area of central London.

12:47   NIA conducts fresh raids in terror funding case
The National Investigation Agency on Sunday carried out fresh raids across Jammu and Kashmir in a case involving terror funding meant to fuel unrest in the valley.

NIA raids continue against Hurriyat leaders, at three locations of Srinagar and one in Jammu, news agency ANI reported on Sunday.

According to ANI, separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's close aide Azaz Akbar's house was raided on Sunday morning.

On Saturday, NIA chief has said that 22 locations, including 14-15 in Kashmir and seven in Delhi, were raided.

The raids follow days after NIA converted a preliminary enquiry into the terror funding, allegedly involving Hurriyat leaders, into a regular case.

12:44   Banks not yet prepared for GST roll-out: Association to Par panel
With less than a month left for the rollout of the GST, the Indian Banks' Association has informed a Parliamentary panel that lenders are not yet geared up for implementation of the new indirect tax regime.

"Since the GST will be operational from July 1, 2017, banks have to make lot of changes in their systems and other procedures. The preparedness of all banks for implementation of GST on July 1, 2017, is a question mark," the IBA has conveyed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance.

The IBA further said that several services by banks to customers are centralised while several others are localised. Banks will have to make changes in the existing infrastructure which would be a huge challenge for the banks.

The IBA had taken up the case for central registration, the association added.

Touted as the biggest taxation reform since independence, the GST will subsume central excise, service tax, VAT and other local levies to create a uniform market.

The new indirect sales tax is expected to boost the GDP growth by about 2 percentage points and check tax evasion.

The powerful GST Council, comprising representative of Centre and states, has recommended a four-tier tax structure -- 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent for goods and services.

12:33   Now, Aadhaar mandatory for kerosene subsidy, Atal Pension Yojana
The Aadhaar card has now been made mandatory for government subsidy on purchase of kerosene and benefits of Atal Pension Yojana.
Those availing kerosene subsidy or contributing for the pension scheme will now be required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo the enrolment process to get the benefits, officials said on Sunday.

The last date to get the Aadhaar or enrolment for getting it will be September 30, in case of Kerosene subsidy.

For the Atal Pension Yojana, the deadline for getting the Aadhaar is June 15, they said, quoting an official order.

However, till an Aadhaar card is obtained, ration card, driving licence, voter identity card, Kisan passbook with photo, job card issued under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and a certificate issued by a gazetted officer or a tehsildar will be considered as proof of identity for the benefits.

It has been also decided to link the Aadhaar number with the ration card issued to households availing the benefits or with the bank account for cash transfer benefit.

The ministry of oil and natural gas has introduced Direct Benefit Transfer through which subsidy is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, who purchase the PDS kerosene at non-subsidised rate.
The decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for these two schemes will prevent leakages of subsidies and ensure that the beneficiaries get their due.

11:07   Londoners call for elections to be suspended following attack
Calls for the Government to suspend the election have been launched in the wake of the London Bridge attack.

People have taken to social media to voice their concerns over the country going to the polls on Thursday.

A petition has also already been launched calling for the election to be suspended 'for the foreseeable future'.

Six victims are dead after three men with 12-inch hunting knives reportedly stabbed revellers after mowing down up to 20 people with a white van on London Bridge.

The attack comes less than two weeks after 22 people were killed by suicide bomber Salman Abedi at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

There was no immediate announcement whether there would be a further suspension following the latest incident - which came just days before voters are due go to the polls on June 8.

One social media user wrote: "Would be ideal to Suspend the Election can't have the risk of there being a transition in government in the middle of this."

Another said: "Never ever thought I'd say this. I think they need to call off the election. We need all concentration on this issue."

11:03   Countdown for ISRO's most powerful rocket starts today
The Indian Space Research Organisation is planning to launch a mega rocket, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III, or the GSLV Mk III, this Monday that will take India one step closer to sending its own astronauts in space.

The vehicle will be launched from the agency's headquarters in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota at 5 pm tomorrow.

The GSLV Mk III weighs the equivalent of the weight of five fully-loaded Boeing Jumbo
Jets or as much as 200 fully grown elephants.

Former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan, the man who conceived the GSLV Mk-III, confirms it will be India's vehicle to ferry Indians into space.

This would be the first developmental flight of the heavy lift launch vehicle GSLV Mark-III that can carry 4-ton class satellites into the 36000 kilometer geostationary orbits.

10:07   'Was throwing bottles, glasses, stools, but I was defenceless'
London Bridge and Borough Market have been hit by two coordinated attacks south of the River Thames.

Armed police rushed to the scene and shot dead the three male attackers in the Borough Market area near the bridge, as authorities urged Londoners on Twitter to "run, hide, tell" if they were caught up in the violence.

One eyewitness, named only as Gerard, told the BBC: "I saw a geezer lying on the floor saying he'd been stabbed

"I saw these three Muslim guys run up and started stabbing this girl. They attacked her and stabbed another guy.

"They started running up the road, stabbed the bouncer at the Tavern.

"I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools, chairs, but I was defenceless.

"They stabbed this girl maybe ten, 15 times. She was saying 'help me, help me'."

He claimed he had hit one of the attackers on the back of the head by throwing things at him, and was chased, but escaped unharmed.

08:38   3 male suspects in London attack shot dead by police
The British police confirmed that 3 male suspects in the London attacks have been shot dead by them.

Police said they believed there were no more than three attackers.

"Armed response officers then responded very quickly and bravely and confronted the three male suspects who were shot and killed on Borough Market," Mark Rowley, Britain's top anti-terrorism officer, said.

In a full statement, Mark Rowley said, "Since late yesterday evening [Saturday, June 3], the Metropolitan Police Service has been responding to incidents in the London Bridge and Borough Market areas of south London. We are treating this as a terrorist incident and a full investigation is already underway, led by the Mets Counter Terrorism Command.

You will understand that our knowledge of the incident is still growing but what we understand at the present time is:

>> At 22.08 yesterday evening we began to receive reports that a vehicle had struck pedestrians on London Bridge.

>> The vehicle continued to drive from London Bridge to Borough Market.

>> The suspects then left the vehicle and a number of people were stabbed, including an on-duty British Transport Police officer who was responding to the incident at London Bridge. He received serious but not life-threatening injuries. His family has been informed.

>> Armed officers responded very quickly and bravely, confronting three male suspects who were shot and killed in Borough Market. The suspects had been confronted and shot by the police within eight minutes of the first call. 08:28   Trump touts travel ban, pledges support to UK in wake of attacks
US President Donald Trump touted his so-called travel ban Saturday in the wake of the London terror attacks, while also pledging assistance to Britain.

Without referring explicitly to London, Trump wrote on his personal account: "We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!"

Eight minutes later, he tweeted, "Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there - WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!"

Cecillia Wang, the deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, quickly accused Trump of exploiting the situation.

"We need to be outraged when the president exploits a terrible violent crime to push his discriminatory and illegal policy," she tweeted.

US vice president Mike Pence also tweeted, "Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the victims, courageous first responders & all the people of London. As President Trump said: WE ARE WITH YOU."

07:58   UPDATE: Multiple casualties after terror attack at London Bridge, nearby market
At least 20 people were taken to hospitals across London after the terrorist attacks on London Bridge and at Borough Market, London Ambulance Service said in a statement. The injured were taken to six hospitals, while other people were treated at the scene, London Ambulance Service Assistant Director of Operations Peter Rhodes said.

Police in London were dealing with what appeared to be a coordinated terrorist attack on at least two locations late Saturday night, after a van mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and a knife attack was reported in a cafe nearby.

Eyewitnesses reported panic as the attacks unfolded, in the vicinity of a major transport hub and in an area packed with restaurants and bars.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said authorities were dealing with a "terrible incident" and London's Metropolitan Police Service said incidents at London Bridge and nearby Borough Market were being treated as terrorism.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said it was "deliberate and cowardly attack" on Londoners enjoying a Saturday night out.

It was the third terrorist attack to strike the United Kingdom this year, after a man drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in March and the bomb attack on an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester two weeks ago.

"From 2208 hrs (local time) officers responded to reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians on #London Bridge. Officers have then responded to reports of stabbings in #BoroughMarket. Armed officers responded and shots have been fired," the metropolitan police said in a statement on Twitter. "Officers are now responding to an incident in the #Vauxhall area," the statement added.

There are reports of a number of casualties,

British Transport Police has said. "The Prime Minister is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated on the incident at London Bridge," Downing Street said.

Transport for London said the bridge has been closed in both directions due to a "major police incident".
