PM Narendra Modi unveiled a statute of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and paid tribute to the former president on his second death anniversary at the memorial at Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram.

Modi unveiled a statue of Dr Kalam playing the veena and offered a floral tribute. Kalam learnt playing the veena when he was with the DRDO during 1985-95, and he used to play it whenever he felt relaxed. The PM also met with the family members of Dr Kalam.

The prime minister hoisted the national flag at the memorial designed and built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. Later, the Prime Minister will flag off the 'Kalam Sandesh Vahini', an exhibition bus, which would travel across various states of the country and reach Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 15, which marks the birth anniversary of the former President.

The Prime Minister will also address a public rally at Mandapam and will inaugurate a number of welfare measures.
